The Role and Department

The Department of Biosciences is composed of 62 academic staff and research fellows; around 50 research and technical support staff; over 90 Research Postgraduate students and over 500 Single Honours undergraduate students, and also teaches students from the Natural Sciences programme. The Department is committed to an ethos of research-led teaching at both BSc and MBiol levels, and was ranked 5th in the UK for Biological Sciences Departments in the Complete University Guide 2024.

Our basic science underpins applications across each-and-every sector of the bio-economy, including Biotechnology, Ecology and Agritechnology. Research programmes are grouped in the following areas: Molecular Plant Sciences; Biomolecular Interactions; Ecology, Evolution and Environment; and Animal Cells and Systems. These groups organise focused seminar series, Research Away Days, manage joint research facilities, oversee mentoring, internal peer review and serve to nucleate larger research projects. Along with our excellent research facilities such as bioimaging, proteomics, metabolomics and genomics we offer a high quality and supportive environment for our research staff.

The Dept. of Biosciences partners with other areas of research strength in Durham University including Computational Sciences and Chemistry, and encourages multidisciplinary research for Health and Wellbeing. The Departments of Computer Science and Law at Durham University seeks to appoint a talented individual to the role of Assistant Professor. This is a permanent position. We are seeking a talented researcher with expertise in AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP), particularly with a focus on AI and NLP applications in legal compliance control.

The university has committed to invest £5M over four years in this groundbreaking project.

The successful candidate will play a leading role in the development of this new initiative, dedicating the first four years primarily to this work. They will benefit from a reduced teaching load and a startup travel budget to support high-quality research, grant applications, and initiatives to engage other staff in JusTN0W-related opportunities. After four years, the appointment will be reviewed based on grant income and may transition to a primarily research role or an Education and Research Track position with a standard teaching load.

• Write and edit programs (R, SAS, SQL, or Python) to query relational database, organize and analyze data from IMPACII or other relational database.
• Share programming code (R, SAS, SQL or Python), document steps of analysis and collaborate with team to ensure transparent and reproducible results.
• Investigate and provide collaborative feedback to team and leadership in understanding and editing programs (R, SAS, SQL or Python) for data anomalies, data integrity, nuances and other unexpected patterns in the data.
• Apply statistical techniques, models and tests to gain insight into the data and inform direction of subsequent analysis and explanation of significance of differences observed in the data.
• Write narrative explanations and interpretations of data findings, results and create summaries of the data as part of larger comprehensive analysis.

Four positions are anticipated to be filled from this Job Opportunity Announcement:

• One position will be filled at the GS 05 grade level, with an annual salary range of $42,151 - $54,793 per year.
• One position will be filled at the GS 06 grade level, with an annual salary range of $46,987 - $61,085 per year.
• One position will be filled at the GS 07 grade level, with an annual salary range of $52,214 - $67,880 per year.
• One position will be filled at the GS 08 grade level, with an annual salary range of $57,824 - $75,170 per year.

• Developing, implementing, and managing key procedures/aspects of the protocol within the scientific scope defined.
• Facilitating, coaching, and planning techniques to lead clinical research within the NICHD, Office of the Clinical Director.
• Independently evaluating critical feasibility issues such as those related to patient-population availability and recruitment, availability of resources.
• Coordinating and implementing clinical research protocols, including protocol development and implementation, patient recruitment, patient enrollment, data collection and organization, data analysis, safety monitoring.
• Ensuring compliance with protocol requirements to maintain data integrity; and supporting ongoing research and clinical programs at NIA.

• Contributes to a range of staff functions involving planning, policy development, and analysis necessary for key policy and program decisions by the division leadership.
• Develops reports and other staff documents on policies, programs, plans, research accomplishments, and other activities.
• Maintains awareness of scientific and legislative developments and issues having implications for current and planned health, social science, and/or bioethics research and research training programs.
• Consults with a wide range of individuals who are involved in scientific research to identify major issues, roadblocks, and potential actions necessary for policy development and interpretation.

As a PDRA on this project, the successful applicant will be required to develop relative sea-level reconstructions over the past few hundred years from salt-marshes in Greenland using diatoms as the main proxy, alongside XRF and other stratigraphic methods. These reconstructions will be compared to relative sea-level predictions from new Greenland-wide models of ice sheet change developed by collaborators on the project from Lincoln and Northumbria Universities. The main responsibilities will be to develop new modern and fossil diatom datasets from Greenland saltmarshes and statistical and chronological models that allow quantitative relative sea-level reconstructions from sites around the west coast of Greenland. A further responsibility will be to write applications for radiocarbon dating support, to prepare data, figures and text for publication and to communicate the interim and final findings of the research at collaborator workshops and international science meetings.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience in developing relative sea-level reconstructions using diatom data and application of quantitative methods of RSL reconstruction. Previous experience working in salt-marshes would be an advantage.
