About the role

The Faculty of Science and Engineering wish to appoint a Senior Technician to provide teaching and research support for the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics.

You will work as part of a team under the direction of the School Technical Manager and deliver support in all aspects of Digital Fabrication including laser cutting and 3D printing, and contribution to CAD & CAM delivery within the School. You will need to demonstrate the relevant skills, a suitable amount of work experience and a commitment to the technical delivery/technical education within the technical team. This role will support a broad range of activities including undergraduate projects, teaching, research and outreach activities.

You will be expected to have an NVQ/BTEC level 3/4 or Degree in a relevant subject area or equivalent or substantial appropriate experience in the subject. You must have practical knowledge and experience in digital fabrication with a particular focus on laser cutting and 3D printing, CAD and CAM skills, including the use of software such as SolidWorks, SolidCAM and Fusion360. As this is a heavily student focused role, experience in a student based focused environment would be desirable. A key element of the role will be the day-to-day operation of the DigiFab laboratory, and as such, experience of working in a H&S focused manner is essential and experience of taking responsibility for H&S in a workshop is desirable.

About this role

An exciting opportunity to join the Technical Services department at Glenside campus, UWE.

Technical Services support the School of Health and Social Wellbeing. This is a practical role, that is primarily student facing, you will report to the Technical Manager and be working with technical and academic colleagues to support and deliver clinical skills practical sessions, mandatory training and simulation activity, which includes planning and preparation. As well as facilitating practical learning you will be helping to lesson plan, investigate and purchase equipment and simulation aids and assist with stock control and equipment maintenance.

Due to cohort size, this will be supporting Nursing (all fields) and Midwifery students, but also our other healthcare students including Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Radiography, Physicians Associates and Paramedic Science.

Specific duties include:

During Construction Phase:

• System Owner responsibilities for facility and utility infrastructure systems including Building Shell & Core, Domestic Water, Sewer, etc.
• Support day-to-day logistics and overall coordination within the department and with project team. Attendance to whiteboard meetings, support and communicate with the team.
• Ability to support end-to-end process for the creation of the Master Maintenance Packages including, but not limited to:
  • Construction inspection walks
  • Commissioning documentation
  • Asset Creation / Preventive Maintenance Creation / Job plan creation and overall ownership of systems within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).  Define spare parts list, responsible for assessment with regards to criticality of spares.

• Develop and assist in redlining and workflow process for SOP’s relevant to the Facilities department.
• Collaborate with peers to streamline or construct efficient Workflows/Business Practices.
• Support of field walks, and general activities leading up to and at startup of systems.; which includes but it is not limited to inspection field walks, punch list items generation, inspection of equipment for Mechanical Completion and other tasks to be assigned.   

Post-Construction completion and continued operations:

• System Owner responsibilities for key facilities and utilities systems like, but not specific to: Building Shell & Core, Domestic Water, Sewer, etc.
• Work with technicians and system owners to develop the scope of work, resource requirements, and parts requirements to complete preventive and corrective maintenance tasks in a safe, compliant, efficient, and effective manner.
• Write clear, concise, and accurate Job Plan steps within the CMMS for corrective and preventive maintenance work orders.
• Review turnover documentation and observe/document required spare parts for commissioning runs and future state operations.
• Collaborate with integrated facilities management team and craft groups to schedule maintenance activities as required to support site operations.
• Support maintenance activities to allow efficient labor utilization of F&E crafts while minimizing the interruption to customer operations. Identify and coordinate contractor resources as needed to effectively complete tasks.

• Overall Facilities Compliance:
  • Owner for Facility Standard Operating Procedures
  • Responsible for reviews, updates, and administration of SOPs for facility department.
• Assist with Procurement and Invoicing for the department.
• Data verification of GMP information for pest control compliance.
• Delegate for Sr Facility manager during period of absence.

Accurately prepare, analyze, and record data on all samples as well as prepare reports and maintain database records.  Staff for this role perform critical functions related to R&D, analysis which may contain sensitive information and may involve work with materials not routinely used in the lab.  Knowledge of and proficiency in complex tasks involving hazardous materials beyond the scope of routine work usually conducted in concentrates lab.  Demonstrated cross functionality with roles at other sites and support for chemists, engineers.
