We are looking for talented wet-lab Research Fellow to work with a multidisciplinary group of scientists on the discovery of new targets for therapy in Diabetic Nephropathy (DN), a devastating complication of diabetes causing significant morbidity, mortality and human suffering. In Singapore, the incidence of DN as a cause of end-stage kidney disease is among the highest in the world. The job will be part of the NMRC-funded project called Diabetes Study in Nephropathy and other Microvascular Complications II, and it will be based within the Centre for Computational Biology (CCB). This position will be for a period of 3 years, with possible extension depending on work performance and funding availability.

Chronic unresolved inflammation is a key pathogenic feature of prevalent inflammatory disorders and related syndromes that together are predicted to affect close to 60 million people with an annual cost of $90B. As such, the global anti-inflammatory therapeutic market is in urgent need for new targets for therapeutic intervention.

The Ho lab at Duke-NUS is building a platform to mine the human genome for novel determinants of the inflammatory response. We are seeking an experienced researcher who will participate and drive the execution of this platform in collaboration with other senior members of the team. The selected candidate will be expected to work at the bench as well as manage some aspects of the project such as administration of documentation required for smooth operations. Successful completion of the project will lead to opportunities for transition to industry roles. The Duke-NUS Cancer and Stem Cell Biology (CSCB) Programme studies the causes and treatments of cancer and related diseases. The CSCB research groups have diverse programmes in both basic cancer biology and clinical-translational studies, with a special emphasis on cancers that affect the Asian community in general.

Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Pharmacology, or other related fields. Candidates with higher credentials may be considered for the Research Assistant (Senior) position.
• Familiar with organic and analytical chemistry techniques, including chromatography and HPLC.
• Demonstrated knowledge and possesses experience in cell and molecular biology techniques such as cell culture, western blot, RNA and DNA isolation, and RT-qPCR.

Job Description

The Duke-NUS Cancer and Stem Cell Biology (CSCB) Programme studies the causes and treatments of cancer and related diseases. The CSCB research groups have diverse programmes in both basic cancer biology and clinical-translational studies, with a special emphasis on cancers that affect the Asian community in general.

The selected candidate will play a key role in a natural products-based drug discovery program. He/she will work both independently and collaboratively to analyse complex natural products using NMR and mass spectrometry, including metabolomic profiling to identify potential molecular targets and mechanisms.

• Independently carry out the design and execution of experimental research required by the research component of the project.
• Write and review research papers, present research outcomes, conceptualise new ideas and develop plans for independent research which could have a considerable influence and impact on the relevant field attracting research funding.
• Provide support for external grant/protocol development, study design and management of research activities.
• Source financial support for research activities by investigating potential sources of funding, collaborate with Principal Investigator to write and revise grant/fellowship applications.
• Provide guidance and mentorship to junior researchers.
• Ensure optimal progress of experiments in the laboratory by conducting, supervising, and evaluating laboratory procedures and outcomes. Revise and analyse targets to obtain high-quality and reproducible results.

Job Requirements

• PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Biology, or related discipline with 2 years of relevant post-doctoral experience.
• Demonstrate general expertise in the field of natural products isolation, metabolomics, and global profiling.
• Strong NMR and mass spectrometry skills in compound characterisation.
• Familiar with database and networking platforms for dereplication (e.g., GNPS).
• Proven track record in the form of high impact publications.
• Strong writing and critical thinking skills, as well as good communication and presentation skills.
• A team player who is able to prioritise, multi-task and work collaboratively in a diverse workforce.
