Faculty of Environment Society and Economy

The above EPSRC full-time post is available on a fixed term basis from the 16th of January 2025 till the 15th of June 2028 in the Faculty of Physics (starting and initial dates can be adjusted upon request).


The post
The Faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in the EPSRC EP/Z534250/1 project “Quantum Information with mechanical systems” and join the groups of Dr. Luca Dellantonio and Prof. Simon Horsley in the Physics department. The project aims at designing and operating novel optomechanical devices that are capable of quantum information processing. This includes the design, the fabrication and the characterization of these devices. The Applicant will be responsible for the theoretical side, that includes (1) the analytical and numerical investigations of the systems and (2) devising the protocols that will be employed by experimentalists to run these novel optomechanical devices.

The successful applicant will perform research in the field of quantum optics and quantum computing. The Applicant will engage with experimental groups at the Universities of Exeter and Lancaster contributing to the realization and characterization of these devices. We welcome Applicants with background in various research subjects, including but not limited to quantum optics, material design, and machine learning.

The duties of the post will include performing research (numerical and analytical calculations), writing and publishing original scientific papers, as well as taking part in weekly group meetings and yearly project meetings. Regular participation in international conferences is planned throughout the project. About you
The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives in the relevant areas of physics, work collaboratively, and co-supervise younger researchers. They will have excellent writing skills, desire to self-study, and will be goal-oriented. During the project, the applicant is expected to learn or improve the skills that are required to acquire independence as a researcher.

The project provides funding for participating in several conferences each year. In these conferences, the candidate will share the results of the group to an international audience, build their own network, and facilitate new collaborations with leading scientists in the relevant fields. The candidate will also be encouraged to participate in external stays at leading institutions with which the group is routinely collaborating. Interactions with other groups in Exeter is also supported. The research environment at the University of Exeter is very alive, with regular meetings for theorists at the department and social events.

Summary of the role



The Business Development Manager role leads on the development of collaborations with industry, organisations and government partners within the BioPharma sector. The post will work within the National Institute for Health and care Research (NIHR) Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) South West Peninsula, usually referred to as PenARC, in the University of Exeter’s Faculty of Health & Life Sciences.



The role will provide general and specialist administrative support across varied activities within the South West Peninsula's Applied Research Collaboration (PenARC). One of 15 Applied Research Collaborations (ARCs) funded by the National Institute for Health and care Research (NIHR), PenARC is a large research group based across a number of organisations. We work closely with health and social care professionals, members of the public and local communities in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset to address immediate issues facing the health and care system through applied research and ensure the needs of our regional population are met.



Key responsibilities for this role include: providing the PenARC Patient and Public Involvement Team and stakeholders (patients, carers and community members) with support relating to meeting attendance, thank you payments and travel arrangements; communications and information sharing about research involvement opportunities; and arranging meetings and events (online and offline) with patients, carers and members of the public. The role requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work and communicate successfully with a broad range of stakeholders and audiences.



While the primary focus of the role will be to support PenARC’s programme of involvement and engagement activities, the post holder will also be providing administrative support to the wider PenARC teams as appropriate and when needed.



About the team

This post is situated within the Project Support Team of PenARC. The team, which includes colleagues from the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, provides operational, programme management, administrative and communications support to the wider PenARC research group. The Faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the work of Dr. Charles Downing and his theoretical research group in quantum optics, nanophotonics and condensed matter. This Royal Society funded post is available for around 8 months with a start date from November 2024 (at the earliest) to January 2025 (at the very latest). The end date cannot be later than the end of August 2025 due to the funding ending at that point.

The successful applicant will conduct high quality research in theoretical quantum optics and related areas. They will work on current issues interesting the research group, including quantum batteries, non-Hermitian quantum physics and quantum topology.

The post

The Faculty wishes to recruit a Research Associate with strong quantitative skills at either Postdoctoral or Graduate level, or a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, to undertake or lead data analytical research projects to investigate the links between genetics, fetal growth and pregnancy outcomes, for both mother and baby. The post, funded by Wellcome Trust, is available from 01/11/2024 to 30/09/2026. The successful applicant will use large-scale genetics data to identify new mechanisms that influence maternal and fetal health and pregnancy outcomes. The successful applicant will work with one of the leading groups in the field, and have an opportunity to develop or advance their skills in human genetics and genetic epidemiology, including the use of SNP genotype, whole genome and exome data from 100,000s of mothers and offspring. They will also receive excellent mentorship and support for career development.



The post will include all aspects of data-driven research projects, including developing ideas and methods, acquiring appropriate data, involving the public and patients, performing data analysis, collaborating with others working on the research programme, dissemination (including writing research papers), supervising and supporting more junior staff and students, developing further funding, and contributing to teaching and staff development.



About you



The successful applicant will be able to develop, or aid the development of, research objectives, projects and proposals; present information on research progress and outcomes; communicate complex information orally and in writing; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.
