Job Summary:
As a member of the University Communications strategic communications team, the Director of Editorial Content is the editor of Furman magazine and collaborates with the brand strategy and visual communications and digital marketing teams, the Director of News and Media Strategy, campus administrators, faculty, staff, students, alumni and donors to deliver creative, compelling and high-impact communications in the magazine and across other platforms. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for University Communications, the director also manages the creation and promotion of several digital publications, writes and edits copy, manages story collection and generating ideas, and assists with internal communications and other external communications that support Furman University’s overarching goals.

Responsibilities
In partnership with University Communications staff, create and coordinate the implementation of strategic, multi-faceted communications, develop content strategies, and maintain and update the university’s editorial style guide.
As editor of the biannual Furman magazine, the weekly campus e-newsletter, the President’s Report and other print and digital publications, the director will develop story ideas, write and edit copy, manage writers, and direct designers and other partners to develop creative content on deadline.
Manage print and digital publication schedules, share and pitch story ideas in weekly news meeting, and manage the Furman news site in partnership with the Director of News and Media Strategy.
Assist with producing internal communications that support the university’s brand and strategic messaging and provide regular, meaningful and consistent information about activities across the university and among alumni and donors.
Work in collaboration with the digital marketing and brand strategy and visual communications teams to develop, execute and monitor communications plans, programs and campaigns in collaboration with key university offices and departments.
Proactively anticipate and recommend communications strategies and messaging that elevate and protect the university’s perception and reputation.
In partnership with communications staff, consider and explore new forms of communications encompassing the latest communications formats, tools and delivery methods.
Develop goals, establish consistent standards for measurement, and assess progress through quantified and qualified research.
Ensure all work is done in alignment with the vision, mission and values of University Communications and Furman University.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Relationships
Collaboration with strategic communications team, with other colleagues in University Communications and other divisions and departments to plan, coordinate, problem solve and present information.
Decision-making Responsibilities
Responsible for initiating, completing and assessing own work.
Work involves non-routine situations and interpretation of data and information, and requires perspective, experience and flexibility in the establishment of procedures, deadlines and creative approach.
Work is collaborative at concept stage and requires openness and communication in determining and directing the appropriate course of action.
Work is performed in collaboration and independently except when the interpretation of law, policy, rule, complex procedure or request for exception is required.
Reporting
The position reports to the Assistant Vice President for University Communications.
Work Conditions
Work is performed under usual office conditions. Flexible, hybrid remote work options are available.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required, master’s preferred, with 5 or more years of experience in communications and marketing in higher education or a related field.
Excellent writing and verbal communications skills.
Demonstrated writing abilities for multiple styles and platforms.
Ability to develop complex and comprehensive communications and marketing plans.
