Applications are invited for a clinical research fellow post, which offers an opportunity to undertake high quality translational clinical research in cardiac electrophysiology and devices linked primarily to AF ablation. The main project will assess the efficacy and effectiveness of high-power, short-duration approach in radiofrequency ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF). The post will also include other AF research projects.

This is a 12 month fixed term post with the potential for an extension for a further 12 months.

It is anticipated that the fellow will work under the direct supervision of consultant cardiac electrophysiologists in the department with direct supervision of Dr Hao Chin.

The applicant will be encouraged to develop towards an MD/PhD thesis. In addition, the post-holder will gain experience in the management of patients with complex arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation and cardiac devices.

The post is based within the Department of Cardiology at Glenfield Hospital and is intended to provide comprehensive training in invasive and non-invasive arrhythmia management for individuals intending to pursue a career as a cardiac electrophysiologist. Applicants are expected to have had substantial training in general cardiology and be in possession of an NTN or equivalent. In addition, applicants are expected to have a sound base of experience in device therapy for brady and tachycardia treatments. In addition basic experience in diagnostic electrophysiology is required and a clear interest and motivation to develop high-level electrophysiology and/or devices skills/experience. Successful candidates will also be encouraged to participate in research activities of the department during their fellowship, as there is good access of established academic support and expertise.

The fellow will be expected to participate in 1- 2 outpatient clinics / week within the electrophysiology service and attendance at 2-3 electrophysiology or devices lists a week is anticipated where training will be given in cardiac devices and EP with focus on AF ablations

It is anticipated that the fellow will work under the direct supervision of consultant cardiac electrophysiologists in the department with direct supervision of Dr Hao Chin. Working and training with other EP and devices consultants will be accessible.

It is expected that the successful applicant will be exposed to some to EP interventions as well as comprehensive management of patients with arrhythmic conditions in out-patient and in-patient settings. The majority of the week will be spent in research activity. There will be no regular ward commitment. The fellow will be expect to do 1- 2 out-patient clinics per week. The opportunity to join the registrar on-call rota may be available, but is not mandatory. There is ample opportunity to participate in the management of arrhythmia patients at device clinics and whilst this is not the focus of the fellowship, access is available to invasive electrophysiology activities.

There is no mandatory commitment to the out of hours SpR rota, but there may be an opportunity to do this should a rota slot become available.

Junior Pharmacists with On-call responsibilities

As a junior pharmacist with on-call responsibilities, you will be integral in providing a 24 hour pharmacy service across all three hospitals by partaking in service provision over extended opening hours.

You will work a variety of on-call shifts including evenings, weekends and nights where you will provide a core pharmacy service including; advising medical and nursing staff, processing urgent discharges, supplying emergency medication, releasing unlicensed medication and processing adult and paediatric parenteral nutrition.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Physiotherapist to join our motivated and enthusiastic team working on our Acute Medicine wards at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester General Hospitals. An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Nurse to join our clinical team within the Cardiac Rehabilitation service.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Being a registered 1st level nurse with specialist knowledge you will be well-motivated and have a minimum of three years clinical experience at Band 5 preferably within CCU/Cardiology setting. Having continued your professional development you must also display evidence of management/leadership skills and hold a recognised teaching qualification. It is desirable to have experience of clinical audit and participation in research.

You will have a clinical caseload within the cardiac rehabilitation team and support the clinical rehabilitation team in delivering new and innovative clinical services by implementing research into clinical practice. The post holder will be multi-site based which will include working in the National Centre for Sports Science Medicine (NCSEM) based at Loughborough University and other UHL and non-UHL sites.

This is a 6 month secondment post. The post is open to suitably qualified nurses with relevant clinical experience.

Consultant Radiologist with an interest in Breast Imaging

We are delighted to invite applications for a Consultant Breast Radiologist to join an existing team of Consultant Breast Radiologists at University Hospitals of Leicester. The appointment will be up to whole time, a minimum of 5 breast sessions are required for those consultants participating in the breast screening programme. Any Consultant who is unable for personal reasons, to work whole time, will be eligible to be considered for the post on a less than full-time basis.

This post is covering both the screening and symptomatic pathways. The service strives to provide the highest standards of healthcare for our patients from our purpose-built Breast Care Centre at Glenfield Hospital.

Our breast screening programme is one of the largest in the East Midlands. Our Breast Screening population is 160,000. In addition to the screening activity our symptomatic and surveillance demand is approximately 17,000 per year. We are a centre that is actively involved in clinical trials and have successfully secured Tomosynthesis and Contrast Enhanced Mammography equipment. There is also the opportunity to practice a wide range of diagnostic and interventional procedures including breast MRI and increasing use of vacuum assisted biopsy.



To undertake programmed activities in breast imaging with the potential for some agreed general duties if appropriate. Opportunities for development of the existing service will be supported where they reflect and support the needs of the local population and the development plans of the trust.
• To contribute to the cancer two week wait service and participate in symptomatic breast one stop clinics and other relevant activity.
• To contribute to the work of the National Breast Screening Service by ensuring adequate film reading numbers, participation in screening assessment and other relevant activity.
• To work closely with the breast clinicians, breast care nurses, breast pathologists and breast surgeons.
• To perform breast interventional work, including USS and x-ray biopsy (core or VACB / VACE), USS and x-ray localisations, US guided aspiration, marker insertion.
• To supervise and report advanced breast imaging such as MRI and CESM
• To lead/take part in multi-disciplinary team meetings.
• To undertake programmed activities in general radiology imaging if agreed and appropriate. This may include contributing to the general on call for imaging.

The Breast Imaging Services are an identified unit within the Clinical Support & Imaging Clinical Management Group, (CSI CMG), based at Glenfield Hospital. The post holder will join a team of ten Consultant Breast Radiologists in an established multidisciplinary setting.


The Leicestershire and Rutland Breast Screening Service (LBSS) is one of the largest in the country with a current screening population of approximately 164,000; the first phase of NHSBSP Age Extension has been fully implemented and continues. The symptomatic breast service provides a high quality diagnostic, treatment and management pathway through a
one stop clinic. The unit also provides breast cancer surveillance and screening of increased risk patients. Approximately 950 cancers are detected per year. The unit is fully digital and has state of the art equipment, and most recently has introduced Tomosynthesis, MRI Biopsy and Contrast Enhanced Mammography.


The Breast Imaging Team actively leads and participates in audit and research. It undergoes regular NBSS QA and is proud of its record in this service. All the radiologists are part of the RCR Breast Group both participating in, and contributing to national meetings.

All breast radiologists (and advanced practitioners) participate in PERFORMS. There is regular audit of clinical practice – interval cancers, MRI, VACB including 1st line, core biopsy sampling and screen reading. The team participate in regular departmental and governance meetings.

The job plan will be subject to annual review, with any revisions sought by mutual agreement but it is expected that the successful candidate will work with the CMG management team to ensure that services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance to match - this may require new and flexible ways of working in the future.



· The clinical sessions are currently 8:30-12:30 & 13:00-17:00 i.e. 4 hour sessions. Any variation needs to be agreed by the Head of service and the general manager.

· Theatre sessions include additional 30 min for pre and for 30min for post op ward rounds (1.25PA). The job plan may contain additional time for patient related admin under the titles A&G and ERS. It also contains protected time for MDT attendance.

· For clarity the Trust currently operates from the (LRI) Leicester Royal Infirmary Site and the (LGH), Leicester General H Site. The trust is in the process of reconfiguration to a Women’s Hospital on LRI site and EMPCC on the LGH site.

· The post-holder will participate in hot week emergency gynaecology cover and Twilight shifts at the gynaecology assessment unit which is currently located at the LRI site. These shifts cover gynaecology. The post-holder will work collaboratively with the service and colleagues should there be a need to develop a different service model for emergency cover.

· On-call consultant is expected to respond to emergency gynaecology patient attendance to the gynaecology admission unit (GAU). Emergency (GAU) is currently at the LRI site. The consultant is expected to support obstetrics in the infrequent instances where gynaecological input is required. On call duties are non-resident from home between 2030h and 0800h unless there are unwell patients needing consultant attendance and are currently in band A. The consultants will need to live within 20 mins from the hospital or seek suitable overnight accommodation closer to the LRI. Daytime hot week sessions start at 0800h to 1700h, with Twilight cover from 1700h to 2030h.

· (Unless otherwise agreed) There is no Labour ward or obstetrics cover in the Job plan apart from the expectation of being able to provide gynaecological input if called upon by Consultant Obstetricians covering labour ward or elective obstetrics theatre.

The post-holder should maintain the necessary skill to enable safe management of gynaecology emergencies at a tertiary level provider accepting complex acute gynaecology patients from the region. The UHL does not refer emergency gynaecology patients elsewhere as it is a large teaching hospital and has the necessary multidisciplinary input to provide support to neighbouring units if required

· The on-call rota will not exceed 1:10 covering Gynaecology only at LRI (emergency admissions - includes a resident twilight session for Acute Gynaecology) and occasionally supporting obstetric emergencies (eg for hysterectomy for obstetric emergencies). Emergency work has been recently assessed as averaging out to 1 programmed activity per week. Mentorship will be provided where necessary.

· Shared office space based on agile working basis and secretarial support is provided. Each Consultant is provided with a personal laptop computer with access to the internet to allow working for home for non-patient facing sessions and NHS.net connection.

Our team of Medicines Management Assistants (MMAs) work closely with our Technicians and Pharmacists to provide patient focused care to inpatients and outpatients. Our MMAs work in a number of areas depending on service need, including the Emergency Department (ED), Medical admissions, Surgery, Cardio Respiratory and specialist wards such as Intensive care

This role will involve providing high quality medicines management by ensuring accurate and timely stock management and replenishment is undertaken and dispensing of urgent items.

The successful candidate will be required to take part in the weekend working, bank holiday working, and evening rotas and will be expected to be flexible to support the requirements of the team.

You will be required to Possess QCF/NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent, have good oral and written communication skills and possess good IT/keyboard skills.

The post-holder will be a qualified and autonomous practitioner required to deliver a wide–ranging and comprehensive extra-corporeal and life support service, includingExtra-CorporealMembraneOxygenation, to patients undergoing open heart surgery and/or other related procedures in Operating Theatres, Adult, Paediatric and General Intensive Care Units, Cardiac Investigation Laboratories, and Coronary Care and High Dependency Units by using a broad range of vital, complex and specialised procedures requiring skilled performance with a high level of individual responsibility applied to a variety of situations, and within the overall responsibility of the Manager, Clinical Perfusion.

Assists in formulating policies for the smooth running of the Clinical Perfusion Department and makes recommendations for improvement and development.

The post-holder will provide clinical and scientific advice, and provide interpretation of results to clinicians throughout the Trust and to external agencies.

Draw on knowledge of a range of theories to inform practice. Assist in developing strategies for the management and delivery of care for the patient group.

Setting up, priming and running cardiopulmonary bypass equipment for cardiac surgery procedures, according to the perfusion procedures and protocols and to play a full role in the routine cardiac surgery programme.

Ensure quality control, calibration and maintenance of expensive and complex medical equipment, ensuring accurate and safe use during clinical procedures.

Assess the patient for relevant medical history, pathology and diagnosis and make appropriate clinical decisions concerning the conduct of the procedure i.e. type of cannulation, size and type of equipment, type of priming solution.

Administer fluids and drugs according to local policy and as necessitated by the clinical situation i.e. priming solutions, anticoagulants, inhalational anaesthetic agents, potassium, and cardioplegic solution.

Be conversant with specialist techniques and perfusion procedures as required by individual patients such as left-heart bypass, cerebral perfusion, and vacuum assisted venous drainage, ventricular assist devices and blood conservation techniques.

Assist surgical and cardiology staff in the insertion and management of intra-aortic balloon pumps as required by individual patients.

Take a full role in departmental and individual projects, with a commitment to research based clinical practice.

Contribute to evidence based clinical practice to maximise clinical effectiveness.

The post-holder is required to participate in ‘out of hours/on-call’ arrangements and to ensure continued co-operation, flexibility and reasonable cover during absence of colleagues and operational demands of the Directorate.

Participate in the training of Perfusionists, and other staff as directed, and the supervision of staff in lower grades as appropriate.

Consolidate specialist skills, knowledge and expertise in clinical practice. Applying these skills to the supervision and training of others in the department and the multidisciplinary team.

Ensure communication is upheld between all disciplines throughout the directorate

Liaison with all relevant staff in research projects related to Perfusion Science.
