About the team:

Our Opportunity:

Your role as Solution Engineering manager would be to deliver on one of our sonar programmes, including being responsible for cost & schedule and fill fulling customer needs.

Your responsibility will be to provide the principle engineering delivery leadership, direction, decision authority and support to the programme or bid. As well as directing and managing, the Engineering team on project or bid to achieve company objectives in terms of programme schedule, financial and quality targets.

You will need to ensure that the Engineering Processes are applied correctly and appropriately on the project to company, legislative, regulatory and international standards.  Your role will include includes significant Management responsibility for engineering strategy and direction and may have direct line management responsibilities for staff on Project.

About You:

You will have extensive multidisciplinary Engineering expertise, with specific knowledge of the domain, infrastructure, Systems Integration practices and the disciplines utilised on the project. Ideally would have worked within the defence sector.

You have ability to develop innovative and low risk practical engineering strategies to manage a complex project through its lifecycle.

Familiarity with Project management and delivery processes and practices, commercial acumen and a robust approach to budget and schedule control.

You would have previously worked in a multidisciplinary team as a Team Lead or Manager.

Job Title: Theoretical Acoustics Engineer

Our opportunity

It is an exciting time for us as we look to grow and build the capability of our Signatures & Array Design team – we are looking to recruit a Theoretical Acoustician to join our team at Cheadle Heath. This is an opportunity to join an agile and dynamic team at the forefront of UK maritime data exploitation and processing. The team deliver low TRL and study activities to external and internal customers and are central to the development and procurement of concepts, capabilities and solutions to anticipate and address the most challenging customer requirements.

Working within a diverse team of specialists & experts your role will be to generate and design concepts and solutions which optimise and assess underwater platforms acoustic and hydrodynamic performance as we look to develop the next generation of Sonar Arrays and Maritime Stealth Capabilities.

This role will include travel both within the UK and overseas and require the candidate to have a UK driving license and be happy to work at sea for periods of up to two weeks.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:

• Provide specialist acoustic FEA/SEA modelling to facilitate pre-test analysis and support to Underwater Radiated Noise, Target Echo Strength and Sonar Performance analysis tasks, initially based in the VaOne Vibroacoustic modelling framework but developing skills and knowledge to create models within PAFEC. Expertise in finite/boundary element analysis would be beneficial.

• To contribute to Thales UKs Signatures and Array Design roadmaps through the assessment and development of Thales, Academic and COTS toolsets of use maritime acoustic problems.  Identify strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for enhancing our Capability.

• Verbal and Written technical reporting will form a significant part of the role, requiring complex concepts to be captured in a format that is accessible to the business and provide traceability for the analysis activities conducted.

• To analyse, predict and measure the acoustic and hydrodynamic performances of acoustic arrays and other outboard equipment. Generate and design theory, concepts and solutions which optimise and assess the equipment’s acoustic and hydrodynamic performance.

• To analyse, predict and measure the acoustic and hydrodynamic performances of maritime platforms. Generate and design theory, concepts and solutions which optimise and assess the platforms acoustic and hydrodynamic performance.

• To conduct the research, design and development of the underwater sensing technologies, tools, products and services of the future.

Skills and Experience:

Safety & Environmental Engineer

Summary

This is a key role within Thales to ensure that we design and deliver products that can be certified to international standards and can be safely used by our Customers.

The role plans and manages the safety related activities within bids and projects to ensure the end product risk has been reduced so far as is reasonably practicable.

It will also lead and conduct the hazard analysis activities and development of safety & environmental requirements for IAS products throughout their lifecycle.

It will provide direction to the design teams for the implementation of requirements and design features to provide the necessary safety assurance and safety argument.

Responsibilities

Take responsibility for identification and delivery of all aspects of the S&EM design activities as part of an Integrated Project Team in accordance with the IAS safety management system.

Carry out hazard analysis, risk evaluation and specify weapon system S&E requirements in the areas of performance, engineering features, interfacing and testing requirements.

Communicate a reasoned argument to all disciplines across the project team for the inclusion of S&E measures in order to ensure adherence to all the derived S&EM requirements.

Maintain and ensure compliance to S&EM processes and procedures.

Maintain a good understanding of all relevant S&E standards and regulations and ensure they are followed in IAS.

Planning and estimating the cost of project S&EM engineering activities.

Prepare hazard analysis reports, safety cases as well as development of valid safety arguments.

Skills

Ability to define and implement sound engineering design principles and methodology

Ability to carry out detailed safety analysis, risk evaluation and safety case construction using best practice approach

Ability to carry out detailed environmental analysis, impact and risk evaluation

Able to address project solutions from a whole life systems engineering viewpoint

Experience:

Experience in a safety engineering role within an engineering environment

Experience of leading safety engineering related activities

Working knowledge of product safety standards and legislation

Knowledge of product safety engineering and environmental management practices

Experience of working within an airworthiness environment

Qualifications:

Science or Engineering degree (or equivalent)

SAFETY credentials and training records  

Ideally a Chartered Engineer or member of a Professional Institution

Configuration Manager

As a Configuration Manager you will support Thales AWS-UK’s activities in the early stages of capture as well as in programme delivery and into in-service support. Key tasks/Responsibilities:

• Perform CM planning for new and existing projects, defining an effective tailored CM Implementation.
• Support the identification of contract/subcontract requirements to ensure effective CM performance of partners and suppliers
• Create, maintain and implement the CM Plan in accordance with policies and contractual/tender requirements
• Specify, maintain and ensure compliance of CM Contractor and Supplier requirements.
• Audit & Assess Contractors and Suppliers to ensure CM processes, systems and deliverables meet requirements.
• Ensure the correct definition of the product and its defining data.
• Participate in the design / stage reviews (PDR, CDR…).
• Responsible for the establishment & maintenance of configuration baselines (FBL, ABL, PBL)
• Participate in the selection of configuration items and subsequent product breakdown structures and Bills of Materials.
• Establish and maintain the configuration change management system, including internal and external CCBs.
• Co-ordinate and control the configuration change process for design change including item change, document change, deviations and waivers, concessions and trial modifications.
• Ensure design change is traceable throughout design and implementation.
• Establish, maintain and release the CSR used to describe the configuration management phases and milestone achievement to track design evolution and implementation.
• Capture, verify and control ‘as built’, ‘as installed’, ‘as tested’ and ‘as maintained’ configuration information.
• Plan and conduct configuration verifications and configuration audits (PCA & FCA).
• Support a pro-active, 'can-do' attitude within the function and encourage innovative thinking.
• Perform CM team task delegation within the team.
• Provide feedback on the efficiency and effectiveness of the development environment.
• Report on CM Key Performance Indicators.
• Support the generation of estimates.
• Ensure a flow of information downwards of the main issues being addressed by Engineering.

20% travel required to other Thales sites within the UK and occasionally travelling to Thales Netherlands site in Hengelo.

About you

• You master the standard configuration management processes and tools, particularly those linked with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM).
• You will ideally have a degree in an engineering or science or mathematics discipline, or demonstrable equivalent vocational experience of working with complex problems.
• You have a good knowledge of the operational processes and methods (Bid & projects, Engineering, Production and Services)
• You have great knowledge of system integration principles (System, Hardware and Software)
• You are able to adapt and assess the configuration management system as well as the contractual and commercial requirements within your scope

This role will be primarily based on-site at either Glasgow or Reading. The role involves domestic and international travel to other Thales sites, partners or customers.

Key responsibilities/tasks include:

• You will be working with the OME Technical Directorate, that has Chief Technologists across the entire OME product spectrum plus collaborating with the Chief Product Line Engineers, Product Line Design Authorities (PLDA). The role will be to look for funding opportunities to support the realisation of product line technology roadmaps.
• Liaise with Thales Research & Technology (R&T) teams across Thales, (Optronics and Missile electronics business, others) and ensure a good relationship with KTDs (Key Technology Domains).
• Explore business opportunities with the wider customer community (Government, Universities and other commercial businesses).
• Working with Sales Teams you will gain access to a wide range of key customers and be exposed to their thinking and requirements.

About You:

Configuration Manager

Location - Templecombe, Crawley or Cheadle

Hybrid working (Minimum 3 days at office)

Our Opportunity

As a Configuration Manager role within Thales, you will be responsible for the registration and release of data managed in configuration. You will verify the integrity, validity and maintenance of records relating to the data, including traceability and history over the entire life cycle.

What the role has to offer

• Perform CM planning for new and existing projects, defining an effective tailored CM Implementation.
• Support the identification of contract/subcontract requirements to ensure effective CM performance of partners and suppliers
• Create, maintain and implement the CM Plan in accordance with policies and contractual/tender requirements
• Specify, maintain and ensure compliance of CM Contractor and Supplier requirements.
• Audit & Assess Contractors and Suppliers to ensure CM processes, systems and deliverables meet requirements.
• Ensure the correct definition of the product and its defining data.
• Participate in the design / stage reviews (PDR, CDR…).
• Responsible for the establishment & maintenance of configuration baselines (FBL, ABL, PBL)
• Participate in the selection of configuration items and subsequent product breakdown structures and Bills of Materials.
• Establish and maintain the configuration change management system, including internal and external CCBs and performs the Configuration Control Board (CCB) Secretary role.
• Co-ordinate and control the configuration change process for design change including item change, document change, deviations and waivers, concessions and trail modifications.
• Ensure design change is traceable throughout design and implementation.
• Establish, maintain and release the CSAR used to describe the configuration management phases and milestone achievement to track design evolution and implementation.
• Capture, verify and control ‘as built’, ‘as installed’, ‘as tested’ and ‘as maintained’ configuration information.
• Plan and conduct configuration verifications and configuration audits (PCA & FCA).
• Support a pro-active, 'can-do' attitude within the function and encourage innovative thinking.
• Perform CM team task delegation within the team.
• Provide feedback on the efficiency and effectiveness of the development environment.
• Report on CM Key Performance Indicators.
• Support the generation of estimates.
• Ensure a flow of information downwards of the main issues being addressed by Engineering.

About you

• You master the standard Thales configuration management processes and tools, particularly those linked with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)
• You have a good knowledge of the operational processes and methods (Bid & projects, Engineering, Production, Services)
• You have great knowledge of system integration principles (System, Hardware and Software)
• You master relevant tools like those related to Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)
• You are able to adapt and assess the configuration management system as well as the contractual and commercial requirements within your scope
• You know how to adopt Lean Management approach and apply Agile principles to the management and development of the team
• You are able to manage complexity & thrive in changing environments and
• You have knowledge in Hardware & Software CM practices and tools
• You are able to create buy-in explaining / detailing your needs and initiatives
• Previous Experience with configuration management in either defence, engineering organisations or experience in delivery of MOD projects
• Experience in working to standards such as DEF Stan 00-057 or similar is highly desirable
• This role will require full SC clearance, either current or ability to gain full clearance is essential

Graduate Systems Engineer - Underwater Systems (R0239971)

Location: Stockport (Cheadle) - Hybrid

Thales UK has an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to join our Systems Engineering Team in Cheadle. This role will be working within one of or growing business units, Maritime Mission Systems (MMS); a team dedicated to working on some of the next generation, cutting edge sonar technologies. Our Systems team provide innovative solutions to the full engineering life cycle for Submarine, Surface Ship, Airborne and Minewarfare sonar systems, Command and Control and full Combat Systems.

This role would suit a Graduate ready to complete their studies in 2024, looking to kick start their career, or individuals with foundational experience in a related Engineering discipline with a desire to undertake a role in System Engineering.

We will also consider applications from graduates that have already completed their studies in 2023 etc.

About the role:

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:

Working and supported by our team of experts, you will take on a variety of responsibilities which will form part of the core of your development. You will collaborate with wider Engineering teams in Cheadle as well as work with teams across other locations. Key duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• System definition activities – requirements definition, functional and physical definitions

• Engagement with, and presentation to, the Customer & End-User

• Analysis of system performance

• Product development; research & development.

• Monitoring of emerging detailed design within various implementation teams – acoustic, hardware, mechanical, software etc

• Preparation of infeed to system level-design reviews

• Integration, Verification, Validation & Qualification (IVVQ) planning and execution, including platform trials from time-to-time

• Preparation for requirements sell-off and contract acceptance with Customer

This role presents ample opportunity to learn and develop in Systems Engineering; unlike our Graduate programme you will not rotate around on placement.
