The project, funded by the Michael J Fox Foundation and in collaboration with Lario Therapeutics, represents an exciting opportunity to undertake translation work at the interface between academic research and pharmaceutical target and drug discovery in an exceptional setting. This work will develop new inhibitors of calcium channels as a neuroprotective strategy to protect vulnerable dopamine neurons in Parkinson’s working with induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived dopamine neurons generated from Parkinson’s patients.

Duties include growth and differentiation of iPSC lines; leading on design and implementation of experiments and cellular assays in neurobiology (eg: calcium imaging, multi-electrode array (MEA), biochemistry, immunocytochemistry, cell and molecular biology; interpretation of data; preparation of data for publication; contribute ideas for new research projects and develop ideas for generating research income; manage own academic research involving small-scale project management; supervise a Research Assistant on the project; and act as a source of information to other members of the group.

You will have excellent knowledge relating to neurodegenerative disease and practical experience in neuronal cell culture and in techniques relevant to molecular and cellular neuroscience. The ability to innovate, trouble-shoot technical problems, be meticulous in practical work and in record keeping is also essential. Applicants must hold, or be near completion of, a PhD/DPhil in a relevant area of research and have experience in cellular neuroscience, and molecular cell biology relevant to analysis of neuronal phenotypes.

The Clinical Trials Aseptic Service (CTAS) is responsible for aseptically preparing clinical trial doses for patients to several departments across the Trust and maintaining up to date documentation according to Good Clinical Practise (GCP).

The main role of this post is to undertake a full range of technical activities involved in the day to day running of CTAS and to support the Aseptic Services Manager and Deputy in the management of day to day activities at CTAS.

• The ability to work well within a cross-functional team framework and be highly delivery focused

Previous exposure to immunology projects is an advantage, but is not necessary.

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant to work on a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary project to develop transgenic rodent models of Parkinson’s disease. The work will support projects seeking to use rodent models of disease to understand the earliest stage of neurodegeneration at a point in which neuronal dysfunction precedes neuronal loss, offering an early therapeutic window for therapy. The post will be based in the Laboratory of Molecular Neurodegeneration in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, and is supported by the Wellcome Trust and an international consortium funded by an Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s (ASAP) grant.

Duties include colony management, breeding and maintenance of lines of transgenic rodents; collection of brain tissue for gene expression analysis; general laboratory management, preparation of data for publication; contributions to wider project planning and determine the most appropriate methodologies to test hypotheses. You will have a good working knowledge of molecular and cellular biology, excellent practical experience of working with animal models and an interest in pre-clinical in vivo models of neurological disease. Previous experience of the management and maintenance of transgenic rodent lines would be an advantage. This project seeks to develop and release machine learning/AI tools to enable precise, metrics measurements to be made on camera trap images of wild animals.

As a Senior Research Sofware Engineer (Machine Learning), you will research, adapt and exploit existing deep learning models and frameworks to build an efficient and user-friendly processing pipeline. You will need extensive experience in machine learning frameworks (e.g. pytorch/tensorflow) and ML-ops for scaling systems into production. You will need to be able to communicate well and work easily with domain users (e.g. field biologists) to understand their needs and problems. You will be independent and self-driven, with a clear approach to project management and delivery. Our team supports a wide range of studies from observational studies through to clinical trials ranging from phase 1, first in human- later phase 4.
The role will suit somebody who has comprehensive nursing experience with our patient groups or prior clinical research experience.

The Role of the Clinical Research Nurse | NIHR

The main base is the John Radcliffe Hospital, the post-holder will lead in the provision of a clinical study service.
• Study Coordination of commercial trials and large cohort studies.
• Delivery of complex investigative medicines.
• Supporting invasive and complex outpatient procedures.
• Working closely with the team to deliver the wider portfolio of studies.
• You will be responsible for assessing and managing the care pathways for patients and carers participating in clinical studies focused mainly on neurodegenerative diseases, neurology and ageing.
• Recruitment, education and monitoring of research participants and the collection and documentation of accurate data including collection and management of tissue and/or samples.
• Supporting a wide range of research clinics.
• Processing lab samples.
• Conducting assessments as per the study protocol.
• Collecting physical assessments.
• Supervising and supporting junior staff.

Our team is part of Division 4 Neurology, Mental Health, Ageing and Neurodegenerative diseases with the Thames Valley and South Midlands area.

We are a diverse team of research nurses, practitioners and administrators. Working closely with clinicians to support and deliver research across our patient groups. The team comes from a variety of backgrounds such as Nursing, Mental Health, Psychology, Biochemistry and NHS to name a few.

The CRN: Thames Valley and South Midlands is one of 15 local Clinical Research Networks in the NIHR Clinical Research Network (NIHR CRN). The NIHR CRN is the clinical research delivery arm of the NHS in England, tasked with supporting the rapid set-up and effective conduct of studies, so that researchers can gather the robust evidence needed to improve treatments for NHS patients. These local Networks drive clinical research delivery performance across the locality, and champion the role of clinical research in the NHS at every level.
