We are very excited to be offering an opportunity a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) (maternity cover) to join our research team. The team includes the co-applicants: Professor Ari Saranandom (Department of Biosciences), Professor Fuschia Sirois (Department of Psychology), Dr Ladan Cockshut (Assistant Professor for Research Culture and Co-I for Evaluation), Dr Beth Upex (Head of Technical Skills, Department of Archaeology) and Andrew Moss (Research Culture Manager, Research and Innovation Services), 3 PDRAs, an external consultant and a Senior Project Manager. We are a cross-departmental and cross faculty team and will be based in a collaborative space.

This role will be responsible for conducting ethnographic research into governance across selected research institutes and will co-design and deliver pilot projects aimed at improving governance structures. This post-holder will be an integral member of our research team, working with colleagues from a diverse range of departments and disciplines to deliver this ambitious project.

The successful applicant will be expected to:

• Conduct ethnographic research, including interviews and participant observation, across selected university research institutes
• Conduct literature reviews and examine documentation relating to research governance
• Use an action research approach to deliver co-designed research governance interventions
• Use a mixed methods approach to collect and analyse data, including ethnographic research in committees, creating and deploying surveys via Qualtrics and analysing quantitative data using SPSS

The Role and the Department     

A laboratory technician post (Grade 6) is available for 2 years (full time, but with the option for flexible working hours) in the laboratory of Professor Keith Lindsey, Department of Biosciences, Durham University to work on a multidisciplinary industrial biotechnology and bioengineering project on environmental processing and recovery of metals.

The world in 2040 is expected to need 4 times as many critical minerals/metals for clean energy technologies as it does today. To achieve this goal, it is clear that environmental processing and recovery of minerals and metals will play a critical strategic role not only in sustainable resource management but also in waste reduction, pollution prevention, and the transition towards a more circular and environmentally conscious economy. This project unites specialists from across the UK who possess knowledge in essential technologies related to bio-extraction and bio-recovery of metals. We will collaborate to establish an open knowledge Hub aimed at enhancing ongoing projects of engineered organisms at various technology readiness levels that tackle important environmental issues associated with mineral extraction, urban mining, industrial waste, and legacy nuclear waste. The Engineering Biology Hub aims to provide a powerful suite of engineering biology tools and approaches that represent sustainable and efficient solutions to address many of the environmental challenges concerning metal waste and metal-scarcity.

The technician will support this project through the functional characterization of bacterially biorecovered copper nanoparticles (CuNPs). Bio-synthesised CuNPs represent a potential application of biorecovery, as part of a circular economy approach to reduce the need for newly extracted copper and chemical processes for NP synthesis. We will 1) test the ability of biosynthesised CuNPs (using Shewanella oneidensis) to replicate the effects of chemically synthesised CuNPs on plant root growth (a bioassay for CuNP functionality), and 2) use CuNPs from engineered S. oneidensis, optimised for NP production. This £12 M project, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, links with a second large project with the water industry, to develop methodologies to prevent tree root ingress into built structures, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with team members both within Durham and also in other participating UK Universities.

The Role and Department

The Research Operations Team is part of Research and Innovation Services (RIS) and provides comprehensive support to academic and PSS colleagues across the lifecycle of a research project. The team comprises pre- and post-award services, consultancy support, and systems implementation and development. Support includes tailored financial and contractual advice and management to all researchers at Durham, from planning, costing, and pricing the initial proposal to ensuring that contracts and agreements are negotiated effectively and efficiently to ensuring robust financial management and compliance of awarded projects. As a Research Grants and Contracts Manager (RGCM) you will play a key role in supporting and developing externally funded research grant activity by providing high quality support and advice to academic staff in the preparation, submission and contractual negotiation of research grants and awards. You will join an enthusiastic and supportive team of RGCMs based in the central office but will also be expected to spend time in the academic departments you support to provide a key link role between the academic community and RIS.

The RGCM will be first point of contact for an academic wishing to apply for external research funding and will provide support and expert advice in a number of key activities including: identifying and disseminating funding opportunities, delivering training and information events, lay reviewing applications, project managing the submission process of the bid including responsibility for budget development and seeking internal approvals. The Role

We invite applications for a Post-doctoral research associate (PDRA) to join the Department of Earth Sciences at Durham university. The role is to work with Prof Madeleine Humphreys (Durham) and Dr Kate Dobson (Strathclyde) on a project funded by the European Research Council, "Storage and Eruption of Mushy Magma Systems" (STEMMS). The position is fixed term for 12 months.

The aim of the overall project is to explore the links between crystal mush textures, magmatic volatiles and the mobility of stored magmas within the crust. This position will use 3D image processing of numerically simulated to examine how crystal shape changes during impingement and progressive overgrowth of a crystal mush. The results will be compared to natural examples of crystal mush textures and used to help interpret crystal shape and crystallisation environment in natural settings. The PDRA will be based at Durham University but will also spend periods of time at Strathclyde. The PDRA will work with the PI and wider partners to interpret the results and produce high-impact publications based on their findings. The PDRA will join the vibrant volcanology group at Durham University and will further benefit from the Department's mentoring programme for early career researchers. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the general activities of the volcanology group and participate actively in the intellectual life of the department.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Research Associate to join Cardiff’s team to help deliver the HyNTS project.

This position is funded through a Strategic Innovation Funding collaboration on the HyNTS project. The aim of the project is to investigate the compression of hydrogen for use in energy networks. It will test repurposing of existing compression equipment to determine if it could be used for 100% hydrogen transmission. 

Project partners include Cardiff University, Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery, Northern Gas Networks, Southern Gas Networks, DNV Services UK, Premtech and Cullum Detuners. Under the beta phase, the project has been awarded £33.3 million ($42.8 million).

Periodic trips to the FutureGrid research facility are expected, and the candidate would need to engage in and review industrially led research activities.

The majority of roles at Cardiff University are currently operating under ‘blended working’ arrangements, with staff having the flexibility to work partly from home and partly from the University campus depending on specific business requirements. Discussions around these arrangements can take place after the successful candidate has been appointed, however it is anticipated that the candidate will primarily work between Cardiff and GTRC. This position is funded through SIF collaboration with the HyNTS project. Periodic trips to the FutureGrid research facility are expected (~1/month), and the candidate would need to engage in and review industrially led research activities.

The position would offer the potential for blended working, primarily between Cardiff and GTRC with occasional days from home.
