The RSPB, in conjunction with BTO and Natural England, are running national surveys of the three key lowland heathland species in 2025 – Nightjar, Woodlark and Dartford Warbler.
We are looking to recruit four Research Assistants, on six-month contracts (from early February to the end of July) to undertake fieldwork for these surveys at various sites (primarily in England). What's the role about?
These posts require experience of conducting fieldwork on lowland heathland, moorland and in conifer plantations, by 1km-square. The post holders should have a good knowledge of the ecology of Nightjars, Woodlarks and Dartford Warblers and should be able to ensure the smooth running of the surveys by dealing diplomatically with all interested parties. Fieldwork will involve long and unsociable hours in the field and will be physically demanding over the contract period. Extensive travel to different sites may also be required. Applicants must be able to regularly travel to, from and within remote locations not served by public transport. If work from a home base is not possible the post holder will be responsible for finding their own accommodation, although the RSPB will be able to contribute towards costs. The successful candidates will be allocated to survey priority sites for each of the species, mainly in southern England, where additional coverage is needed. The surveys will follow the standard national survey methods for each species, with the following survey periods for each species: Woodlark - mid February to late May (2 visits to each square); Dartford Warbler - early April to late June (2 visits); Nightjar - June and July (2 visits). Additionally, surveyors will be asked to record numbers (or absence) of the other species listed in the JNCC heathland bird assemblage. The fieldwork will include a combination of early mornings, and survey work around dawn and dusk.

For further information on this role, please see the attached detailed Job Description and Person Specification. 2.1 To coordinate arrangements required for patients undergoing specialist investigations as part of the research protocol. 2.2 To assess the patient prior to trial treatment, monitor the patient receiving trial treatment and follow the patient up on completion of trial treatment as required by protocol.2.3 To collect and accurately record data in accordance with requirements of the trial protocol. 2.4 To participate in the design and preparation of research protocols, patient information sheets and other documentation associated with clinical trials, ensuring that these are reviewed and updated as required. 2.5 To safeguard the integrity of the trial by ensuring compliance with ICH GCP guidelines. 2.6 To be involved with the running of several concurrent research studies. 2.7 To disseminate research data by preparing and presenting posters or research papers for presentations at meetings, conferences and publication. 2.8 Where appropriate, to establish nursing-related research projects with the agreement of the lead medical investigator and the Senior Nurse, Clinical Trials. 2.9 To assist the Team Leader / senior research nurse in the research team with the development, monitoring and review of clinical and research policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

As a Data Scientist, you will be working on Digital Innovation projects leveraging 4IR and cutting-edge technologies. You will be collaborating with Data Science Team to design and build analytics tools/models/analytics to accelerate digital technologies adoption and unlock business value from data insights. You are required to constantly learn new front-tier technology and creatively apply/deliver solutions to support Global Ops Strategy and goals.

• Work with a team of data science professionals, and cross-functional teams to understand business problem, identify business opportunities, optimize business performance and/or improve KPIs.
• Leverage data mining techniques in mathematics, statistics, machine learning, deep learning, NLP, LLM, GenAI visualization etc. to discover insightful patterns.
• Analyze large-scale structured and unstructured data to develop AI/ML models that enhance business value and KPIs, while deriving actionable insights and communicating them to leaders for product improvement.
• Develop/take an idea to create prototype AI/ML models with intuitive interfaces, integrating with existing systems and showcasing successful use cases.
• Prepare and deliver presentations with data visualizations and business conclusions.

The post holder is expected to have experience in oncology. The post would suit a trainee in either clinical or medical oncology, who envisages a future career as a clinical researcher involved in academic clinical trial development and translational research, and who wishes to build her or his knowledge and skills to support this career path.
• Develop clinical research skills in order to propose, design and develop academic institutional and/or multicentre clinical trials with support from the consultants and experienced statisticians and trial managers working within the Neuro-oncology unit
• Develop grant writing skills for peer reviewed funding and/or endorsement of academic clinical and translational studies. This includes understanding how to appropriately cost a study and attribute the costs of healthcare research as required by major research funders
• Develop skills to design translational research protocols in collaboration with clinician scientists and statisticians
