Science Technician (Fixed-Term until 31/05/25)
(37 Hours Per Week / 39 Weeks Per Annum - Term-Time Only)
Rate of pay: £12.80 – £13.69 per hour (Grade D).
We seek a suitable candidate to fulfil the role of Science Technician. The Science department at SMCC has a purpose-built preparation room serving six laboratories. The technician would be required to support the delivery of Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics to GCSE level.
The role involves taking responsibility for the practical resourcing for KS3 and GCSE classes under the direction of the teaching staff. In-class support of students during experiments would be part of this role. The ability to be proactive in the preparation of planned experiments and reactive to situations that may arise such as spillages or broken equipment is vital. A willingness to be trained as a First Aider is also important.
The successful candidate will be enthusiastic with good communication skills. A knowledge of and passion for science would be highly desirable. Previous experience and/or a willingness to undergo training is essential. Good IT skills including in the use of spreadsheets, word processing, databases and others software would be advantageous. The Faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the work of Dr. Charles Downing and his theoretical research group in quantum optics, nanophotonics and condensed matter. This Royal Society funded post is available for around 8 months with a start date from November 2024 (at the earliest) to January 2025 (at the very latest). The successful applicant will conduct high quality research in theoretical quantum optics and related areas. They will work on current issues interesting the research group, including quantum batteries, non-Hermitian quantum physics and quantum topology.

The Faculty wishes to recruit two Postdoctoral Research Associates to support the work of Dr Craig Beall and Dr Tom Piers. These externally funded posts are available from 1st October 2024 on a fixed-term basis of initially one year, with a second year of funding to be released after a satisfactory progress report at nine months.



The successful applicants will perform laboratory-based research using cell culture models to investigate cell therapies for Type 1 Diabetes. Candidates with prior experience in diabetes research or neuroscience/stem cell biology are encouraged to apply but candidates with relevant experience from other disciplines are also encouraged to apply. We are also recruiting a graduate research assistant in this round (advert reference P96792), to support the project and the work of the two postdoctoral researchers.



The post will include performing 2D and 3D tissue culture using human cell models. There will also be work using organoid and organ-on-a-chip to develop advanced human-relevant in vitro models.



A significant component of work will require experience of cell biology including imaging studies, ELISAs and multiplexing, cell signalling and cell-to-cell communication.



Some intercampus travel may be required.

Required to start in September 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter, the school is looking to appoint a highly motivated, dynamic and innovative teacher of Science prepared to teach all three disciplines to GCSE level. Your new role

This position is being advertised as a full-time position starting asap, however, a part-time work pattern would also be considered for the right candidate.
