Rate of pay: £12.80 – £13.69 per hour (Grade D).
We seek a suitable candidate to fulfil the role of Science Technician. The Science department at SMCC has a purpose-built preparation room serving six laboratories. The technician would be required to support the delivery of Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics to GCSE level.
The role involves taking responsibility for the practical resourcing for KS3 and GCSE classes under the direction of the teaching staff. In-class support of students during experiments would be part of this role. The ability to be proactive in the preparation of planned experiments and reactive to situations that may arise such as spillages or broken equipment is vital. A willingness to be trained as a First Aider is also important.
The successful candidate will be enthusiastic with good communication skills. A knowledge of and passion for science would be highly desirable. Previous experience and/or a willingness to undergo training is essential. Good IT skills including in the use of spreadsheets, word processing, databases and others software would be advantageous. The Faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the work of Dr. Charles Downing and his theoretical research group in quantum optics, nanophotonics and condensed matter. This Royal Society funded post is available for around 8 months with a start date from November 2024 (at the earliest) to January 2025 (at the very latest). The end date cannot be later than the end of August 2025 due to the funding ending at that point.

The successful applicant will conduct high quality research in theoretical quantum optics and related areas. They will work on current issues interesting the research group, including quantum batteries, non-Hermitian quantum physics and quantum topology.

About you
The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or nearing completion) or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. We seek to appoint a Post Doctoral Research Fellow to join a multi-disciplinary research team for the REFRESH (nutRition intervEntions For malnouRished oldEr adultS in care homes) trial. This is a large NIHR funded randomised controlled trial examining oral nutritional supplements in care homes over four years.

The trial is a multi-university collaboration led by Professor Mary Hickson and Professor Jane Murphy of Bournemouth University. It is supported by the PenCTU and includes collaborators from the University of Exeter (statistics, health economics and community geriatric expertise), University of Coventry (dietetic expertise), University of Southampton (geriatric expertise), as well as care home managers and public representatives.

Your main tasks will be to recruit, set-up and initiate sites (care homes), maintain excellent working relationships with the care homes, manage the three field workers (to help with site initiation), develop online training for care home staff, and manage the day-to-day running of the trial. You will be supported by a Research Assistant and line managed by Professor Hickson.

Applications are invited from highly motivated individuals with a PhD or equivalent within the field of nutrition and dietetics. You will have excellent communication and organisational skills, clinical research experience with older adults, and ideally will have worked in the care home sector. You will also have an ability to work both independently and as part of a team, be able to work to tight deadlines and be comfortable and resilient working under pressure. A knowledge of training other professionals and using online educational platforms will be an advantage.

The role will be based at the University of Plymouth, recruiting in Devon & Cornwall, Wessex and the Birmingham area with an opportunity to discuss a hybrid online and in person working pattern. Faculty of Health and Life Sciences



The Faculty wishes to recruit two Postdoctoral Research Associates to support the work of Dr Craig Beall and Dr Tom Piers. These externally funded posts are available from 1st October 2024 on a fixed-term basis of initially one year, with a second year of funding to be released after a satisfactory progress report at nine months.



The successful applicants will perform laboratory-based research using cell culture models to investigate cell therapies for Type 1 Diabetes. Candidates with prior experience in diabetes research or neuroscience/stem cell biology are encouraged to apply but candidates with relevant experience from other disciplines are also encouraged to apply. We are also recruiting a graduate research assistant in this round (advert reference P96792), to support the project and the work of the two postdoctoral researchers.



The post will include performing 2D and 3D tissue culture using human cell models. There will also be work using organoid and organ-on-a-chip to develop advanced human-relevant in vitro models.



A significant component of work will require experience of cell biology including imaging studies, ELISAs and multiplexing, cell signalling and cell-to-cell communication.



Some intercampus travel may be required.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or nearing completion) or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. Applicants will be able to work to agreed timelines and milestones and maintain excellent written records and excellent interpersonal skills to coordinate activities with the other team members directly involved in this project.

1. Obtain consent prior to giving care in accordance with Trust policies. 2. Competently undertake delegated duties in line with patient care plans. 3. Leadership 1. Have an understanding of the clinical research team work-plan and contribute to its achievement. 2. Manage research performance and study timelines of relevant studies. 3. Collaborate with other Trusts and organisations within the region to improve research delivery. 4. Keep up to date with research management issues through liaison with other Research Specialists /Team leaders and link with national networks. 5. Provide relevant supervision and mentorship to members of staff and students. 6. Take responsibility for own health, safety and security and promote the health, safety and security of the wider team. 7. Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical and research policies, procedures and SOPs. 8. Facilitate and maintain effective communication within the research team and between the multidisciplinary clinical team. 9. Assist in the delivery of education and training regarding research for the wider Multidisciplinary Team and act as an ambassador for research. 10. Be responsible for the care of research participants within the relevant sphere of practice and use opportunities to provide health promotion and patient education. 2. Use relevant clinical knowledge to screen and identify patients suitable for clinical research using inclusion and exclusion criteria and utilising NHS records, screening clinics, visiting wards and outpatients and using Trust IT systems and databases. 3. Act as a resource and role model for all aspects of Research Clinical Practice in order to optimise patient care and clinical practice this may include carrying out physical assessments, conducting sample retrieval and processing, providing or coordinating interventions and treatments, clinical monitoring. 4. Undertake all mandatory training and take part in personal development reviews. 5. Ensure the environment is suitable for patient care and research processes, recognising the importance of privacy, dignity and diversity. 6. Demonstrate professional development and an in-depth knowledge of current clinical and research practice. 7. Provide on-going advice and information to patients and their carers/families with regard to their participation in clinical research in order to facilitate effective informed consent. 8. Where appropriate receive and document written informed consent from research subjects. Training and support for informed consent will be given. 9. Be responsible for the safe and accurate collection of research data through clinical procedures such as venepuncture, history taking, standard observations (height, weight, BP, RR, HR, SpO2 temperature) and other assessments such asECG, physical examinations, disease specific outcome measures, questionnaires, rated scales, qualitative interviewing as required by the protocol. 10. Centrifuge, process track and ship samples in line with protocol requirements. 11. Ensure the safe administration of any treatments and drugs given within the context of a clinical trial. 12. Monitor treatment toxicity/side effects and initiate changes to treatment as required by the protocol. Escalate any concerns to the Principle Investigator or relevant physician. 13. Ensure accurate patient trial documentation, including the use of electronic data capture systems and ensure relevant information is recorded in patients medical notes and case report form in a timely manner. 14. Refer to other specialists as required in order to provide optimal care of the participant. 15. Contribute to the monitoring of clinical standards within the research team. 16. Treat all persons encountered during the course of duties with respect and courtesy and maintain a standard of conduct which best represents the clinical trials team and the Trust. 17. Work within the relevant professional code of conduct (if applicable) demonstrating accountability for own actions and awareness of own limitations. 18.
