The Minneapolis VA Anesthesia Service provides veteran patients with anesthesia procedures for both ambulatory and inpatient surgical procedures. The services include: rendering patients insensate for surgical procedures (general anesthesia), major neuroaxial blocks for surgical procedures (spinal and epidural anesthesia), nerve block for surgical procedures, monitored anesthesia care, procedures to alleviate post-operative pain and resuscitation services. Anesthesia services are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The department utilizes anesthesiologists (physicians who specialize in anesthesiology) and nurse anesthetists (nurses who specialize in anesthesia). We work in an anesthesia team to provide anesthesia and critical care services to the patients who are undergoing surgical procedures at the Minneapolis VAMC. At the Minneapolis VA, the physician anesthesiologist directs the anesthesia care team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Provision of care in the most complex surgical procedures
- Perform and document a preanesthetic evaluation of the patient before surgery including requesting consultations, additional diagnostic and/or laboratory studies in consultation with the anesthesiologist
- After concurrence with the plan by the anesthesiologist, initiation of the planned anesthetic technique that may include general, regional, MAC, or local anesthesia. Screening/Assessment - The social worker will interview patients and develop a psychosocial assessment of the Veteran. The social worker may gather and evaluate information from sources other than the patient, with the patient's consent, to validate patient reports and provide a more comprehensive assessment. The goal of the assessment is to highlight the Veteran's strengths, limitations, and internal/external supports and service needs in order to optimize the Veteran's functional status. The social worker will also develop a record of patient history (Integrative Summary or Interpretive Summary), psychosocial assessment and psychosocial diagnosis for each assigned patient.

• Review appropriate documents for the transfer of real property interests and perform review of legal instruments and related documents (e.g., easement agreements, purchase options, exhibits, land exchange agreements, mortgage subordinations, affidavits, solicitor's opinions, waivers, pre-acquisition contaminant reports) required for the acquisition of interests in land for assigned projects.
• With assistance from Realty Specialists, participate in various realty transactions associated with the acquisition of interests in land and exchange of land.
• Assist in the procurement and review of abstracts of title, title certificates, or other forms of title evidence. Examine title and makes recommendations on how to cure title problems or clear title.
• Review title defects and objections raised by the Solicitor's office, and recommend steps to correct title.

Major Duties:

Administrative and Clerical

• Assigns, analyzes, and evaluates necessary daily workflow and workload
• Evaluates problems and provides an appropriate solution or refers the problem expeditiously to a pharmacist when the problem is beyond the technician's level of knowledge or expertise
• Independently gathers, evaluates, and analyzes data and generates reports pertinent to inpatient pharmacy daily rosters and patients needing medication histories.

• Triages medication information requests from patients, family members, caregivers, and other healthcare team members through appropriate modality (phone, secure messaging, etc) and refers to other clinical staff when indicated
• Conducts routine patient medication history interviews via appropriate modalities (ie: VVC, telephone, in person, etc) to obtain and assess pertinent medical information and medication history
• Completes accurate and timely documentation of patient interaction in EHR using the appropriate note title and template, in compliance with business rules

• Assists in identifying areas for improvement within the workflow of Clinical Inpatient Pharmacy where appropriate to facilitate the delivery of care to Veterans
• Assists in the development and updating of Minneapolis VA HCS Pharmacy policies and procedures

• Completes annual mandatory training, competencies, and education as required
• Maintains courteous and collaborative communication with other members of the healthcare team
• Supports the Inpatient Pharmacy Care team through a combination of independent and interdependent tasks. Supports, participates, and contributes to the team's efforts and effectiveness.
