Our Transmission Industry Year Placements provide real hands-on experience through a 12-month placement in either our HVDC Engineering team or our Project Engineering Team.

Throughout your placement, you will have the support of a business mentor and buddy who will provide guidance and support to enable you to reach your full potential.

About our Teams

HVDC (High-voltage direct current): With new renewable energy projects in the North of Scotland needing to be connected to the National Grid and the electricity transported large distances from areas of Generation to areas of Demand, HVDC (High-voltage direct current) is the most efficient way to do this. SSEN Transmission are working on a significant number of new HVDC schemes deployed in Great Britain over the coming years. Our HVDC Engineering team is central to these projects and we are at the cutting edge of new HVDC Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology, having recently commissioned the Shetland HVDC Link, which completed the Caithness-Moray-Shetland HVDC project, the first Multi-terminal HVDC VSC scheme in the world outside of China. With significant projects to work on in the North of Scotland, including work on our Eastern Green Link projects (planned HVDC links from the East coast of Scotland to Northeast England) as well as a number of embedded links within SSEN Transmissions own Network in the North of Scotland, we are aiming to connect up to 10GW of renewable energy in the North of Scotland to the National Grid. This team are based in Inverness, Glasgow or Perth.

Project Engineering: is a core technical department within SSEN Transmission, at the centre of the transition to Net Zero. You will be trained to work on multimillion pound infrastructure projects covering innovations that will allow us to meet technological challenges. This team are based in Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen or Inverness.

What do I need to join?

To be considered for the role, you will be studying a degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering (or a mix of these disciplines).

Our opportunities are open to students who are in their 2nd year of their degree onwards and will graduate between 2026 and 2028.

We'd love you to have some practical work or project experience that reflects your passion for the energy sector, as well as demonstrable experience of working in a team. You'll also be comfortable working to and setting stretching individual targets and using your own initiative to overcome challenges and should have a genuine interest in SSE and the prospect of a long-term future with us.

The Opportunity:

The School of Engineering is seeking to appoint a versatile and experienced Engineering Technician to join its skilled Technical Services team of over 40 technical staff. The appointee will be primarily responsible for delivery of technical services and support to the huge variety of research activity within the School, particularly related to the Institute of Energy Systems. The post-holder will contribute to the safe and efficient running of laboratory and workshop areas, including through routine servicing and maintenance of equipment, Health & Safety implementation within labs and workshops, and the transfer of knowledge and practical skills to undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as staff (including, technicians and modern apprentices).

The School’s mechanical workshops support teaching and research, as well as the activities of student innovation groups (including, FormulaStudent, HypED and endeavour). The department seeks to appoint a Teaching Associate in Geotechnical Engineering (maternity cover) to support the development and delivery of a growing portfolio of undergraduate programmes for both full-time and Graduate Apprentice students. You will have extensive knowledge of Geotechnical Engineering and ability to teach this subject to a high standard at undergraduate or postgraduate level and experience in research or teaching lab environment (preferred).

You will have the ability to use your expertise in geotechnical engineering to deliver high quality teaching in this subject. You will have excellent communication skills, an ability to work as part of a team, and have the attributes of an academic mentor. Preferably, you will have experience in lab based geotechnical projects.
