About the role
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Faculty of Construction and the Built Environment at Exeter College working as part of the Professional Studies department which includes Civil Engineering, Building Services and Construction Mangement. This department has seen huge growth in apprentices and full-time learners as well as substantial investment into staff, facility and equipment over the last few years and this role is to support this growth. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone with industry experience in Civils/Construction with a can-do attitude, offering excellent prospects for personal development.

The role focuses on supporting the teaching, learning and assessment activities that take place within the workshop for both 6th form learners and apprentices. This includes preparation of materials for use, maintaining and developing a safe and stimulating learning and working environments, issuing and ordering of tools and equipment, manufacturing of products to support assessment using machinery and for more confident/experienced staff there will also be opportunities to teach. This will be via a development programme where you will receive a mentor and undertake a L3 teaching qualification funded by the college, with excellent progression routes.

We are looking for up to two apprentices to be placed in the Fabrication and Welding department or potentially in the CNC section.You should show a keen interest in this area of engineering and have a knowledge of what the role requires. Primarily in the Fabrication department, you will be learning all aspects of welding, including but not limited to MiG; TiG; Robotic Welding; Gas and Arc. You will have the opportunity to programme and operate the latest Mazak, Fibre Laser cutting machine with multi pallets, You will be trained in the operation and programming of a Panasonic Robotic welding cell that is serviced by a Kuka, pick and place robot, collecting and placing components for welding. Further skills will be gained in the many processes undertaken, whilst producing a variety of products used throughout the world, these skills to include: cutting; drilling; bending; rolling and forming. This will be complimented with day release training at Exeter Technology College, for the duration of your apprenticeship. To compliment this training, there are opportunities for movement within the factory to gain knowledge of other machining processes, to include CNC Turning and Milling on many new multi axis, multi-pallet machines in the Rotolok Group. Full attendance at college is required and holidays are expected to be taken to coincide with college holidays were possible. Whilst in the factory, you will be expected to work in a safe manor at all times, respecting the safety of others around you. Full PPE will be provided and all tools required to complete the task are made available. You will receive full training on the processes or machines that you will be working on.


Training
As an apprentice you will be required to attend college for two days a week in the first year, with one day a week in the subsequent years. You will also learn whilst on the job.


Qualifications required
Grade 4/C in Maths and English or equivalent.

Skills required
As an apprentice you will need to be able to: study at college for a further 4 years or more; have an understanding of engineering processes; be able to work within a team; be organised; be able to concentrate at all times and understand the risks involved before you commence any work.

The role
As a Weapons Engineering Section Head, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary where you'll join a new and highly motivated team of experienced Engineers and Technicians as they support and deliver Weapons Engineering systems back to the fleet.

Day-to-day, you'll lead a small team in carrying out the maintenance, fault diagnosis, defect repair and administration associated with equipment onboard a Type 23 Frigate.

• Responsible for the material state and engineering standards of equipment assigned to you throughout the upkeep period. You will be the Lead Technician and Subject Matter Expert for all medium calibre gun and Associated Director system maintenance tasks.
• Assist in the commissioning process of systems within the scope, bringing them from a dormant to fully functional state in line with set procedures and trials.
• Responsible for the ordering, installing and returning of spares relevant to your section's equipment.
• Carry out basic planning and engineering administration tasks for your section in support of your Group Head by utilising maintenance management systems, technical handbooks, upkeep procedures. You will be required to identify, diagnose and repair defects within your area of speciality.

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

Essential experience of the Weapons Engineering Section Head:

• Experienced Engineer, Maintainer or Technician within the required specialisation - mechanical and electrical
• Experience within a Supervisory role in previous employment
• Be computer literate and able to use Microsoft Office applications to a reasonable standard, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams.
• Be familiar with current medium calibre gun, gun director and magazine spray systems fitted to Royal Navy Warships and have a recognised competency or demonstrable knowledge in at least one of the above mentioned systems - Desirable
• Qualifications for the Weapons Engineering Section Head:
• NVQ Level 3 or above in an Engineering discipline is desirable or the equivalent demonstratable experience.

The role
As Engineering Design Manager, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. This is an exciting opportunity to join a developing part of the business undergoing significant transformation to support the Devonport Facilities requirements of the Future Maritime Support Programme. Due to the regulatory framework in which we work, the application of Babcock's Business Management System is key.

Day to day, you'll be responsible for managing the technical aspects of a project, from identification of the need through to handover, acting as the Technical Authority single point of contact, organising and leading resources as the project demands.

Responsibilities will also include:

• Scoping and managing the technical delivery of projects throughout their lifecycle
• Supporting the Design Management Group to manage the development and delivery of complex design solutions within safety critical facilities, to quality, time and budget
• Securing, organising and leading internal and external resources as the project demands
• Ensuring that design outputs are fit for purpose and delivered within agreed budgetary and schedule constraints
• Developing and applying a structured design process in a proportionate manner that reflects conventional and nuclear facility applications

This role is full time, 35 hours per week provides hybrid working arrangements with 2 days in the office/onsite and 3 days working from home.

Essential experience of the Engineering Design Manager:

• Have a strong technical background and demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills due to the levels of stakeholder management required by the role
• Sound understanding of designing and substantiating solutions for safety-critical applications, gained ideally from a regulated industry
• Experience of the design lifecycle and a logical approach to problem solving

Qualifications for the Design Manager:

• You will hold a Degree in a STEM subject (or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience)
• Registered as a Chartered/Incorporated Engineer. If not registered then you should be able to evidence that you are working towards this, along with holding membership of a relevant professional institution
