The post holder will act as the Lead Specialist in education and practice development issues within the Maternity Service, supporting other members of the team including, ward managers, Lead Midwives, Divisional Director of Midwifery, Divisional Manager and Maternity Service Managers in the development and delivery of high standards of women and family focussed, evidence-based care. You will act as a resource for clinical expertise and maintain clinical skills by undertaking regular 1:1 clinical practice supporting members of the team.
You will have the leading role for the Maternity Practice Development team to support, develop and deliver a co-ordinated and systematic approach to practice development and establishing evidence into practice. This role will involve some cross cover and working across all sites.
In addition, you will contribute towards the management of the Maternity Inpatient / Outpatient wards and services by providing professional leadership and support. Actively promote practice and educational development at ward/departmental and community level.

1. Actively promote an effective practice learning and development environment within the Maternity Service and across the Directorate where Maternity issues impact on other service users.
2. Using analysis and judgemental skills assist in the development of appropriate educational strategies in response to evaluations of care, audit, risk data and user experience, to address complex problems, e.g., poor performance, risk management clinical governance issues.
3. Facilitate the professional and personal development of staff within the Maternity Service to improve the quality of patient care highlight learning needs in conjunction with Unit managers and Lead Midwives.
4. Provide role modelling, clinical supervision, coaching and mentoring for colleagues ensuring that all facilitation is subjected to reflection and evaluation processes.
5. Take an active part in the development and dissemination of national initiatives around practice development.
6. Co-ordinate and ensure all staff access and complete agreed mandatory training maintaining records as required achieving Trust targets
7. Develop equipment training competencies in conjunction with the Trust’s Medical Devices team ensuring all requirements for competency training and assessment are met in line with current Trust requirements.
8. Assist in the support and gathering of evidence in relation to clinical competence required of individuals being managed through the relevant Trust Policies, e.g. Capability.
9. Oversee accurate records of staff in relation to the requirement of the NLS course. Facilitating the application process and identification of eligible candidates.
10. Co-ordinate the application process for individuals applying for university modules in liaison with Unit managers and Lead Midwives, identifying appropriate funding streams.
11. Provide advice, education, and training to staff in the assessment, development, and implementation of nursing care programmes for patients.
12. Maintain a presence in the local clinical area by delivering direct patient care alongside colleagues to role model and facilitate excellent midwifery practice.
13. Utilise specialist knowledge to enable colleagues to develop their competence in using different interventions.
14. Act as a change agent in the clinical environment using persuasive, motivational and negotiating skills to bring about change in practice.
15. Act as a role model at all times and provides midwifery expertise and specialist knowledge within the area of practice.
16. Lead the development and implementation of ward induction programmes, preceptorship, and clinical supervision.
17. Ensures the implementation of educational programmes within the ward/department area meet the development needs of both nursing and other support staff.
18. Creates and environment in which individuals take ownership for their own development.
19. Act as a contact for both pre and post registration Midwifery staff.
20. Ensure all staff have received an effective induction in accordance with current Trust Policies.
21. Participate in all relevant areas of staff training and development required to develop the Maternity service.
22. Provide effective clinical leadership of ward/department staff in conjunction with or in the absence of a ward manager.
23. Contribute towards the effective use and deployment of ward/department consumables budget.
24. Comply with all Trust policies and national guidelines.
25. Deal personally with patients, families, and carers in order to aid resolution of complaints.
26. Represents the Unit at meetings as and when required.
27. Facilitate open and effective communication within the Ward team.
28. Act in accordance with the NMC Professional Code of Conduct.
29. Acts as a role model at all times and contributes to the provision of midwifery expertise and specialist knowledge within the area of practice.
30. Take an active role in the implementation of the emerging nursing agenda.
31. In conjunction with the Ward Managers, develops and implements ward induction programmes, preceptorship, clinical and managerial education, and development in line with their personal development plan.
32. Contribute towards an environment in which individuals take ownership for their own development.
33. Responsible for implementing educational programmes within the ward/department area which meet the development needs of both midwifery and other support staff.
34. Acts as a mentor for both pre and post registration midwifery staff.
35. Attends mandatory training and update sessions.
36. Support the development of an environment that promotes the value of midwifery care.
37. Maintain a high clinical profile and facilitates application of theory to practice.
38. Positively influence the assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of midwifery care.
39. Assist in the effective utilisation of resources to achieve a high standard of midwifery care.
40. Maintain accurate, legible, and timely written/verbal reports that inform other members of the multi-disciplinary team and patients and their carers’.
41. Progress the implementation of Clinical Governance initiatives by acting as a change agent and taking a proactive role in service development.
42. Contribute towards the collection and evaluation of information in order to support clinical decision-making.
43. Promotes current evidence-based practice.
44. Is receptive and supportive towards the research plans of others.
45. Contribute to the writing of policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols.
46. Participate in the monitoring of standards of care within the Trust Quality Assurance programme and Patient’s Charter.
