A Vacancy at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.


Applications are invited for a clinical research fellow post, which offers an opportunity to undertake high quality translational clinical research in cardiac electrophysiology and devices linked primarily to AF ablation. The main project will assess the efficacy and effectiveness of high-power, short-duration approach in radiofrequency ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF). The post will also include other AF research projects.

This is a 12 month fixed term post with the potential for an extension for a further 12 months.

It is anticipated that the fellow will work under the direct supervision of consultant cardiac electrophysiologists in the department with direct supervision of Dr Hao Chin.

The applicant will be encouraged to develop towards an MD/PhD thesis. In addition, the post-holder will gain experience in the management of patients with complex arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation and cardiac devices.

The post is based within the Department of Cardiology at Glenfield Hospital and is intended to provide comprehensive training in invasive and non-invasive arrhythmia management for individuals intending to pursue a career as a cardiac electrophysiologist. Applicants are expected to have had substantial training in general cardiology and be in possession of an NTN or equivalent. In addition, applicants are expected to have a sound base of experience in device therapy for brady and tachycardia treatments. In addition basic experience in diagnostic electrophysiology is required and a clear interest and motivation to develop high-level electrophysiology and/or devices skills/experience. Successful candidates will also be encouraged to participate in research activities of the department during their fellowship, as there is good access of established academic support and expertise.

The fellow will be expected to participate in 1- 2 outpatient clinics / week within the electrophysiology service and attendance at 2-3 electrophysiology or devices lists a week is anticipated where training will be given in cardiac devices and EP with focus on AF ablations

The majority of the week will be spent in research activity. There will be no regular ward commitment. The fellow will be expect to do 1- 2 out-patient clinics per week. The opportunity to join the registrar on-call rota may be available, but is not mandatory. There is ample opportunity to participate in the management of arrhythmia patients at device clinics and whilst this is not the focus of the fellowship, access is available to invasive electrophysiology activities.

To act in a professional manner at all times when dealing with patients, relatives and representatives from both within and outside of the Trust. Co-ordination of specified trials and take responsibility for : Organisation of any necessary tests and investigations as detailed within the Sample preparation (e.g. blood, urine, tissue and faecal samples): retrieval, centrifuging, pipetting, slide making and preparation for storage, liaising with the hospital and external laboratories when appropriate. Undertaking low risk clinical duties. Maintaining logs of stored samples and freezer temperatures. Maintaining adequate stock levels of sample kits. Required to hold a phone for a short period of time to monitor freezer/fridge temperatures including during and out of office hours. Organising the logistical aspects of diagnostic specimens, packaging, and shipment, including handling of dry ice. Resolving data queries raised by sponsoring organisations. Archiving all study related material including patients notes after study closure. Reporting and submitting of Serious Adverse Events (SAEs) from this site within stipulated timeframes to sponsor organisations and the Research and Innovation Office. Tracking Serious Unexpected Event reporting. Maintaining and updating study specific site files. Notifying General Practitioners of their patients involvement in a clinical trial.
