Bookyana Cultural & Community Services is a respected, Aboriginal-owned and managed organization leading in the provision of National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) services for Aboriginal people in South Australia. Committed to delivering culturally sensitive and high-quality support, Bookyana employs Aboriginal men and women in various roles, including Senior Management, Administration, and Support Workers, to ensure that Aboriginal participants receive culturally tailored care. Bookyana’s services include Mentoring, Positive Behaviour Support, Support Coordination, Specialist Support, Supported Independent Living (SIL), and Home and Garden maintenance.
Position Overview:
The Personal Care Assistant will support Aboriginal participants, providing daily assistance and personalized care, ensuring that cultural practices and sensitivities are respected. The role is essential to helping clients maintain independence, dignity, and quality of life while supporting their individual goals under the NDIS. This position requires a compassionate and patient individual with a strong understanding of cultural appropriateness in care delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide daily personal care assistance, including help with mobility, personal hygiene, dressing, and grooming.
Assist clients in their daily activities to promote independence and quality of life.
Support participants in managing their routines, including medication reminders and other health-related tasks.
Build and maintain strong, respectful relationships with clients, fostering a culturally sensitive environment.
Work closely with clients to develop individual support plans tailored to their needs and goals.
Participate in cultural awareness and competency training as required by Bookyana.
Assist in household tasks where necessary, including meal preparation, light cleaning, and laundry, to support a safe and comfortable living environment.
Support clients with transport and companionship, promoting social engagement and community involvement.
Document and report on clients' progress and any significant changes in their health or behavior.
Requirements:
Australian citizens and permanent residents are encouraged to apply.
Certificate III in Individual Support (or equivalent).
Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Personal Care Assistant or in a similar role, preferably with Aboriginal communities or NDIS participants.
Deep understanding and respect for Aboriginal culture and practices; willingness to engage in cultural competency training.
Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with participants, families, and Bookyana team members.
Ability to adapt to the changing needs of clients with empathy and patience.
Reliable and professional approach to work.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Commitment to maintaining high standards of care and upholding Bookyana’s cultural values and practices.
