Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit an enthusiastic individual to cover maternity leave as a Ward Medicine Assistant, to work on our fast-paced wards at the Freeman Hospital.
As a member of the ward multidisciplinary team, this post is a key link between ward colleagues and pharmacy to improve communication and efficiency in the management of medicines (e.g. medicine supply issues, planning discharge).
Candidates interested in this position are required to bring with them motivation and a determination to succeed in a busy, high-turnover environment.

They must be able to demonstrate good written and oral communication skills, the ability to use own initiative and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
The post is initially fixed term for 9 months to cover maternity leave, but there is potential for it to become permanent as we look to roll out the service across different areas of the trust.
We are looking for applicants who have a GPhC recognised dispensing qualification and would invite any internal applicants to apply for this role as a secondment.

This role will be primarily based within the Surgical Directorate but will also involve time within the main Pharmacy Department, carrying out dispensing and supply activities. These activities range from preparing medication for a patients discharge either directly on the ward or within the main dispensary, ordering medication for use by in-patients and assessing the suitability of patient's own drugs (PODs) along with their transfer within the Trust.
Working closely with the Pharmacy Stores team to ensure sufficient stock is ordered for use by ward staff to improve stock availability, reduce waste and contribute to cost savings.
It is expected that the successful candidate will work fixed hours of 08:30am - 5pm (Monday to Friday). This will NOT routinely include weekends, Bank Holidays but may include late duty shifts until 6pm.

• To work primarily on the ward, carrying out the full range of Dispensing Assistant duties including the dispensing of prescriptions and orders.
• Provide technical support to the ward including carrying out routine procedures in the ordering, distribution and storage of pharmaceutical stock.
• Assess patient’s own drugs (PODs) to ensure that they are suitable for reuse within the Trust and that they are transferred with the patient.
