• In a patron usage facility, circulates among patrons to assure service is satisfactory; receives and resolves customer complaints.

• Plans, conducts, publicizes and arranges support for special events, social activities, tournaments and related functions. May provide work guidance to other staff.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Major Duties Include, but are not limited to the following:
The Nursing Assistant provides direct patient/resident care in a variety of settings, including acute care units, acute mental health unit, community living center. Care includes assisting with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, eating and mobility. Operates a variety of equipment including, but not limited to, wheelchairs, stretchers, vital sign machines, bladder scanners, lifts and oxygen. Assists with procedures using proper technique. Transports patients using safe technique. Completes thorough, timely and accurate documentation of care provided. Must be able to recognize and react to acute changes or emergent patient conditions such as bleeding, abnormal vital signs and behavior crisis. Duties if this position include but are not limited to :

• Assists in the care and treatment of patients receiving medical, surgical, or mental health treatment. Observes and reports changes in patient behavior, attitude, and appearance, such as patients' color, vital signs, wound/skin condition, and reaction to/results of treatment.
• Assists in the performance of treatment by performing duties such as the taking/monitoring, recording, and reporting of vital signs, height, weight, patient concerns/symptoms, and less obvious changes in patients' condition. Assists with treatment and diagnostic procedures by preparing and positioning the patient, obtaining supplies/equipment, reassuring the patient, cleaning up following the procedure, documenting/reporting concerning the procedure, and conducting post-procedure checks on the patient as directed by the RN.
• Provides care to patients experiencing extremes of behavior, including those who are severely depressed, agitated, and/or acting out and those patients with complex medical conditions. The care provided frequently involves setting up/working around various types of medical equipment and the use of medical supplies.
• Recognizes emergency situations and appropriately intervenes while awaiting assistance

The incumbent serves as a Lead Medical Support Assistant for the Clinic Operations & Access Management Service (CAMS). The Lead MSA monitors and makes work assignments, provides input on performance, resolves daily workplace issues and maintains efficient workflow. Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to:

• Assuring coverage of all areas of responsibility.
• Conducting ongoing reviews to ensure quality of work.
• Ensuring accurate and timely scheduling of appointments.
• Providing guidance to staff members to include changes in policies and procedures.
• Distributing and balancing workload.
• Creating and maintaining employee work schedules.
• Orienting and providing on-the-job training for new and current employees.

The AMSA provides specialized and expert administrative patient support while working collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model. Work involves specialized administrative judgment and the flexible use of a wide range of clinical flow processes relating to access to care across multiple clinics, specialties, and/or care in the community resources.

Some of the major duties of this position include, and are not limited to:

• Answering phones, greeting patients, relaying messages to appropriate staff inside or outside of the unit.
• Scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patient appointments and/or consults, including interpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with VHA national scheduling guidelines.
• Entering no-show information.
• Monitoring appointment requests from multiple electronic sources.
• Verifying and updating demographics and insurance information when patient's check-in for appointments.
• Processing laboratory related activities such as dictation, transcription, upload reference lab results, etc.
• Coordinating administrative functions relating to emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals and determines appointment type based on the patient's eligibility status (i.e., TRICARE, sharing agreements, collaterals, research patient, VA employee, etc.).
• Coordinating with the patient care team to review clinic appointment availability (utilization) to ensure that clinic schedules are closely monitored to effectively support the needs of the clinics and makes adjustments as necessary.
• Developing and/or maintaining effective and efficient communication with the patient, interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model teams, VA medical centers, and other agencies.
• Processing incoming patient secure messaging through My Healthy Vet and coordinates with care team as appropriate.
• Participating in team huddles and team meetings to manage, plan, problem solve, and follow-up with patient care by sharing information and collaborating with the interdisciplinary team.
• Setting priorities and deadlines, adjusting the flow and sequencing of the work to meet team and patient needs.
• Identifying incomplete encounters and communicating findings to providers, as needed.
• Entering appropriate information into the electronic record; monitoring pre-appointment information and/or requirements to assure readiness for patient visit/procedure.
• Managing patient systems to verify and validate accuracy and resolve issues; evaluating patient information and clinic schedule lists to determine whether the patient requires an immediate appointment; informing team members about shared patients.

• Physical Security Support: monitors and responds to alarms; traces access patterns, programming, assigns or removes user permissions, and remotely opens and secures doors during routine and emergency operations; determines when to dispatch law enforcement or other personnel to investigate; maintains radio/alarm activity records/logs to include dates, times, and results of communications and activities; prepares completed reports; issues and retrieves government issued keys and/or identification cards; and maintains accountability of Police Officer badges issued and all associated logs.
• Communications: monitors and receives routine and emergency calls from a variety of sources that need police, fire, medical or other emergency services; maintains contact with law enforcement units; monitors and directs responses to security and life safety communications, radio dispatches, telephone calls, and other emergency communication circuits; coordinates with various federal, state and local law enforcement officials for coordination of emergency situations; and operates a variety of communications equipment, telephones and computer systems to support both routine and emergency operations.
• Operations Support: performs system checks on a variety of equipment used in the dispatch center; troubleshoots systems when problems arise and resolves issues whenever possible; conducts equipment inventories and completes records and other logs; enters, updates and retrieves information from a variety of computer systems/databases; uses state and the National Crime Information Computer (NCIC) to access sensitive law enforcement information to support field operations and investigations; enters or updates regional and national records; compiles and prepares reports related to events occurring in the operation of the police control center; completes vehicle registration tasks and issues decals and permits.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

The Physical Therapist Assistant's (PTA) primary function is direct patient care. Treatment duties include a variety of interventions and treatment techniques, documentation as well as patient/family education. The PTA provides treatment that promotes the prevention, remediation and rehabilitation of acute and chronic physical and psychosocial dysfunction. The PTA administers and monitors therapeutic interventions based on goals formulated by the Physical Therapist (PT). The PTA participates with the PT in planning and implementing complex treatment programs and applies physical therapy procedures to patients under the direct supervision of a PT. The PTA also conducts educational programs to support the needs of patients.

Duties may include but are not limited to

• Receives and interprets requests or instructions for procedures from the physical therapists or physician. Plans and implements therapy for patients under the close and sometimes direct supervision of a physical therapist.
• Completes a chart review and obtain a subjective history.
• Administers therapy to patients incorporating accepted modalities and treatment standards per the American Physical Therapy Association (PTA) under the close and sometimes direct supervision of a physical therapist.
• Demonstrates familiarity and basic competencies in all clinical modalities, exercise and functional activities to enhance patient independence.
• Communicates with treating physical therapist to allow for development and modification of treatment plans. Persuades and motivates veterans and family members to participate in treatment plan and comply with indicated regimens and post-discharge activities. Interacts with the patient and family goals for treatment under the close and sometimes direct supervision of a physical therapist.
• Fits, adjusts, and instructs patients in the use of orthoses, prostheses, and mobility appliances. Instructs, motivates, and assists patients to learn activities of daily living and improve functional activities.
• Prepares and presents written and oral reports for the physical therapist and fellow healthcare professionals concerned with the patient's care as needed. Participates in family and multidisciplinary team meetings to identify patient's needs, reports on patient's goals and progress and to assist in planning patient's treatment program.
• Maintains a safe work environment to include non-technical maintenance of equipment, safety checks cleaning, stocking, etc. Develops safe work habits to prevent injury to patients, co-workers, and self. Reports to Supervisory Physical Therapist the need for equipment or items necessary for patient treatment.
• Maintains a high level of competence through participation in continuing education programs, clinical in-services, and on-line training.

• Inpatient Treatment
  • The physical therapist assistant assigned at the Battle Creek VAMC is assigned a varied caseload. He/she may assists the therapist in the treatment of often inpatients.
  • Has the proper skills and knowledge to recognize special precautions for mobilizing patients that have been bedridden for prolonged periods of time.
  • Assists in monitoring the patient's vital signs (HR, BP, RR) and assists to restore abnormal alterations to normal parameters in accordance with established procedures/protocols/practices.
  • Documents changes orally and written in progress notes.
