Main duties of the job



We are looking for a highly motivated, compassionate individual who is a qualified associate practitioner / assistant practitioner in Mammography. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are necessary. The candidate will need experience of working with patients as part of the NHS breast screening programme.

The role includes carrying out mammography under the supervision of a state registered Radiographer as part of the NHS breast screening programme and symptomatic breast imaging service.

Applicant will be required to complete Mammography Associate Apprenticeship

About us



The breast imaging team at Oxford includes four Consultant Radiologists, Consultant Radiographers, Advanced Practitioners, Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners/Mammography Associates and Radiology Assistants.

The breast screening service provides a screening service to the Oxfordshire community with 2 mobile screening vans and 2 static screening sites. In addition, the service supports a symptomatic breast service at the Horton General Hospital at Banbury and the Churchill Hospital in Oxford.

Mammography Associates will work as an Assistant Practitioner within the breast imaging workforce undertaking routine 2 view mammography (x- ray images of breasts) as part of the NHS breast screening programme and on individuals with symptoms of breast disease.

Key Duties
• To work within the Scope of Practice for Mammography Associates/Assistant Practitioners in Breast Imaging and undertake screening and symptomatic mammograms in the static and mobile clinics.
• To assist in interventional procedures (core biopsies, vacuum assisted core biopsies and localisations) as required, including preparation of procedure trolley and support of patient undergoing procedure.
• Complete QA testing on a daily, weekly and monthly basis at the static and mobile units.
• To process and prepare images and paperwork for clinical reporting.
• To ensure safe use of imaging and other equipment used in the department.
• To manipulate heavy machinery and be required to manoeuvre clients/patients who are unable to move.
• To be hoist trained and be confident when utilizing this equipment. The post holder will be required to manoeuvre wheelchairs and have a high level of dexterity when working in the various clinics.
• To explain to clients and patients the preparatory requirements regarding undressing/dressing and assisting them when necessary.
• To show compassion, sensitivity and understand the anxiety and fear prior to the client’s/patient’s procedure.
• To exercise discretion and maintain patient confidentiality, dignity and privacy at all times.
• To demonstrate good communication skills when dealing with clients, patients, relatives and members of the Multidisciplinary Team, utilising sensitivity, empathy and the ability to manage conflict.
• To undertake mandatory training as required by the Trust, to develop and increase skills, to improve the service to the public.
• To input client data onto CRIS.
• To be aware of and comply with the relevant Ionising Radiation Protection Regulations and Local Rules.

Qualified Anatomical Pathology Technologist (APT) Band 5 or Trainee Anatomical Pathology Technologist Band 5 Annex 21 - 70% of top of pay scale rising to 75% until qualified.

The mortuary service at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking for either a qualified anatomical pathology technologist or a trainee who is a degree graduate with a biological or forensic degree and wishes to start a career in anatomical pathology.

To qualify as an anatomical pathology technologist you will need to complete the RSPH level 3 diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology. We encourage staff to continue their training with the level 4 diploma to become specialist anatomical pathology technologists. Both qualifications are supported by the Trust.

Candidates need a flexible approach to work with a positive attitude and ability to cope with the varied and demanding work supporting end of life care.

Successful candidates will participate in cross site working and when trained, participate in an on call out of hours service.



To work as part of a team to assist in the provision of mortuary services -

The Thames Valley Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening programme offers community based ultrasound screening for abdominal aortic aneurysms to an eligible population of almost 13,000. The target screening population are men in their 65th year.

The primary purpose of the Screening Technician role is to undertake the day to day operational running of AAA Clinics out in the community, across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire with the large proportion of the programme’s clinics held in East Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire.

The primary purpose of this role is to perform ultrasound scanning as part of the National Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme (NAAASP). We are looking for someone who is willing to train as a technician. The trainee role is suitable for people from a variety of backgrounds who can undertake a Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care which typically takes 12 months to complete. No previous experience is required as training will be given to ensure high standards of scanning in accordance with National Operating Procedures. The training also enables the Screening Technician to have confidence in explaining the screening programme, reassuring patients about the implications of the scan, discussing results and arranging the next steps, should it be required.

The post holder will initially work as an assistant practitioner, carrying out abdominal ultrasound scans within standard operating procedures. Following successful completion of the NAAASP course, the post holder will work independently and make judgements according to experience and training. Advice is available when needed for more complex situations but the post holder generally works on his/her own initiative without reference to the Line Manager.
• Organise and carry out ultrasound scans of the abdominal aorta in accordance with current guidelines for sonographic scanning and the programme protocol.
• Ensure that scan results are despatched as soon as possible from off-site screening clinics to the screening office in a safe and confidential way.
• Communicate the outcome of the screening test to the man (this may be via his relative/carer or interpreter); provide additional information and offer support appropriate to the outcome/patient pathway.
• Deal with medical and patient enquiries as appropriate, taking the initiative to prioritise work and to bring to the attention of medical or administrative staff any patient whose condition warrants it.
• Handle incidents and medical emergencies in a professional manner and in accordance with local policy, supporting other screening staff if appropriate.
• Keep the Screening Programme Manager, Team Leader Screening Technician, Programme Administrator and/or Clinical Skills Trainer informed of caseload and any difficulties arising, seeking advice where necessary.
• A full driving licence and use of a car are essential to this role and the successful candidate must be willing to travel frequently to cover all areas.

The role will include:

- Cable preparation for cable jointing and cable termination into transformers or switchgear.

- Assisting experienced Cable Jointers working on our HV & LV Network where you will undergo training whilst they joint both HV (high voltage 11KV - 33KV) works and LV (415V - 1000V), carrying out jointing, cabling and excavation work on a pre-planned and quick response basis, which from time to time may require an overnight stay.

- Other duties will be, assisting with maintenance/refurbishment and preparation of electrical equipment within substations compounds.

- Being responsible for the safety of yourself and colleagues, acting as an ambassador for a strong safety culture in everything you do.

- Being customer focussed and acting as a strong ambassador for SSE Power Distribution, providing excellent customer service with a flexible approach when called upon for fault conditions.

Jointer Programme:
