This position is part of the Pathways Internship Program and is located at the Central Office or an institution in the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP).

Observes and assists the supervising Education staff in organizing files, researching vendors/partnerships/reentry service providers/programs, compiling reports for further evaluations, developing graphs/tables of statistical data, making calls and collecting data, assembling training materials, assisting with staff visits, and e-mailing general information.

Receives on-the-job training of instructor work.

At the GS-7 level, you will:

• Researches and interprets legal and regulatory material for use by the supervisor or coworkers.
• Performs varied routine legal support or law-related functions. Analyzes portions of legal issues, questions or cases.
• Collects data from a variety of reference sources in office and prepares documents for use by attorneys or other legal support staff.
• Assembles materials for staff associated with briefings, conferences, and meetings.

At the GS-4 level, you will:

• Assists in the performance of other standardized support duties such as the collection of literature references and the organization of files.
• Assists with routine steps in science studies and regulatory/compliance work.
• Supports higher-graded staff in planning for program management of environmental programs.
• Select appropriate methods and procedures for assignments based upon previous assignments or instructions.

At the GS-5 level, you will:

• Completes developmental assignments that expand the employee’s understanding of concepts, underlying principles, and program requirements and procedures.
• Assists with summary of environmental program information data for use in preparing reports and program evaluations.
• Performs routine tasks in science studies of a standard nature on regulatory and compliance issues and problems.
• Supports higher-graded staff in planning for program management of environmental programs.

• Collects data from reference sources in office and incorporates it into typed/computer generated material.
• Proofreads all material, corrects grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors.
• Verifies and arranges information in accordance with the general nature of the material and purpose of presentation.
• Provides information and assistance on procedural requirements and formats for filing various data and material.

At the GS-5 level, you will:

• Assists senior specialists in conducting program analysis functions.
• Researches legal and regulatory material to obtain factual information and/or interpretation for use by the supervisor or co-workers.
• Collects data from reference sources in office and incorporates it into typed/computer generated material.
• Provides information and assistance on procedural requirements and formats for filing various data and material.

At the GS-4 level, you will:

• Assisting with varied but routine environmental protection work to support higher level members of the branch or division for planning for program management of environmental programs;
• Reviewing and summarizing a variety of environmental program information data for supervisor’s use in preparing reports and programs evaluations;
• Assisting higher graded specialists by performing clear cut assignments that allow employee to become familiar with the basic EPA statues and regulations
• Working as a team member on a special project or study teams performing day to-day staff operations to assist higher level analysts in the organization to which assigned.

At the GS-5 level, you will:

• Reviews files, records and other documents to compile and summarize information pertaining to environmental programs and/or compliance reviews.
• Provides information and assistance on procedural requirements and formats for filing various applications, permits, grant applications, or compliance-related forms and documents which may be required.
• Collects, tracks, computes, and summarizes statistical information and data in chart and narrative forms.
• Conducts information searches and reviews references and guidelines to resolve problems and questions in assigned functional area

Newly-hired mathematicians and mathematical statisticians begin their careers in the Mathematics Development Program (MDP). The goal of the three-year MDP is to provide on-the-job training in the broad range of mathematical and statistical sciences at NSA. This is primarily accomplished through 6-month tours in NSA offices of the MDP participant's choosing. Mentorship is provided for each tour and participants work on real mission problems.

MDP members also study cryptologic mathematics, statistical data mining, and related subjects in courses taught by Agency experts. Participants are required to develop skills in programming and using computational resources to solve mission problems. Various short-term and long-term travel opportunities exist for interested participants but are not required. MDP members are able to take advantage of other professional development opportunities available at NSA as well. This includes continuing education opportunities and optional Agency courses in everything from professional communication to goal setting to machine learning. Career mentorship and participation in professional networks such as WIMS (Women in the Mathematical Sciences) are strongly supported. A healthy work-life balance is encouraged and resources including maternity/paternity leave, counseling services, and financial coaching are available for all employees.

Through the MDP, participants are rooted in the Agency community of mathematicians and mathematical statisticians. Also they are given the opportunity to explore a wide variety of problem sets. At the end of the program, graduates choose their first assignment from any open positions at the Agency.

For the Entry/Developmental work level, knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas is desired but not required. Successful applicants may learn these skills at the Agency.
- Programming expertise in any language
- Experience in the design, development, use, and evaluation of mathematical models, methods and/or techniques (e.g., algorithm development)

The timeline for hiring mathematicians is quite long, commonly one to two years. We recommend applying when graduation is no more than a year out, as start dates can often flex to accommodate the needs of a successful applicant.
