About the role
Balfour Beatty are looking for a Health and Safety Advisor to join our Asset & Technology Solutions business based in Derby.

As a Health and Safety Advisor, you will actively engage with operations to develop and maintain a proactive approach to positive HSES management. Provide expert support and coaching to operations to enable risk elimination to be embedded in
our zero-harm culture. Support the broader HSES agenda as required whilst ensuring governance, compliance and legal obligations are met.
What you'll be doing
- Undertake planned inspections / tours as per Assurance Plan.
- Deliver pre-work site inspections to evaluate and address potential risks at planning stages.
- Review, track and trend unplanned events and support project / site management in their completion of investigations.
- Support local management in their liaison with clients and contractors by attending meetings and other events such as working groups.
- Prepare written reports following all site visits, inspections, audits and investigations
- Review and update Depot/Site documentation.
- Ensure compliance to the BMS as well as testing the effectiveness of its various components in controlling risk and delivering continuous improvement.
- Ensure compliance to the business emergency planning.
- Monitor emerging, new and revised legislation to assess its impact on the business.
- Ensure that lessons learned from monitoring/incidents are communicated and adopted.
- Monitor specific environmental aspects and work in conjunction with the HSES Manager to ensure compliance with the environmental procedures to meet our ISO 14001 certification requirements.
- Deliver training and advisory sessions to personnel and contractors
- Share learning across projects and business streams
- Ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm and the Zero Harm Events Calendar
- Support to ensure safety leadership teams (SLT) are engaged
- Promote the reporting of Close Calls throughout the business ensuring that actions are taken and feedback delivered
- Deliver Safety Cascades informing operations of relevant safety alerts, fast facts and lessons learnt
- Promote telematics and safe driving behaviours
- Assist the projects to deliver effective planning stages through compliance and reliability
- Be able to plan and monitor performance on SMART Objectives
- Ability to communicate and promote a positive Health & Safety culture
- Able to demonstrate a proactive approach and ability to implement best practices
- Assist in maintaining the companies Safety management system –iSMS
- Ensure effective communication of essential safety documents, e.g. safety alerts / bulletins
- Undertake reviews of relevant safety documentation, e.g. work package plans / task briefings
Who we're looking for
The following qualities/experience are required:- - NEBOSH Certificate / National Compliance & Risk Qualification equivalent
- Competence in incident investigation
- Demonstrable experience in a health and safety advisory role
- Strong HS&E legal knowledge and practical application
- Experience of delivery of HSE training
- Proven ability to influence and promote a positive safety culture
- Demonstrate ability to develop and implement risk free environment using best work practices and innovations
- Assist the organisation for achieving sustainable delivery
- Experience in temporary site electrical installations
- Proven track record delivering H&S support to multiple teams
The following qualities/experience are desirable:-
- NEBOSH Diploma / NVQ Level 5 – Occupational Safety & Health
- Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) competence
- Environmental / Sustainable qualification
- Good understanding of CDM2015 – Roles and Responsibilities
- An exemplary communicator and able to build and maintain positive professional relationships at all level
- Internal Auditor qualification (ISO 45001, ISO 9001 and or 14001)
