The company is currently seeking a full-time Painting Trades Worker for a minimum 2-year contract, with the possibility of further extension.
The Role:
The Painting Trades Worker will be responsible for applying paint, wallpaper and additional finishes to inside and outside surfaces of buildings and other areas as well as utilising pre-coating agents, filling and levelling materials, and mixing and matching colours and textures. Read blueprints, drawings, technical specifications and material data sheets in the successful completion of assigned painting tasks.
The annual salary is $73,500 plus superannuation.
The Responsibilities:
• Apply paint, stain, varnish, enamel and other finishes to equipment, buildings, bridges and/or other structures using brushes, spray guns or rollers.
• Apply primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces such as bare wood or metal for finish coats.
• Calculate amounts of required materials and estimate costs, based on surface measurements and/or work orders.
• Cover surfaces with drop cloths or masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.
• Fill cracks, holes and joints with caulk, putty, plaster or other fillers using caulking guns or putty knives.
• Mix and match colours of paint, stain or varnish with oil and thinning and drying additives in order to obtain desired colours and consistencies.
• Polish final coats to specified finishes.
• Read work orders or receive instructions from supervisors or homeowners in order to determine work requirements.
• Remove fixtures such as pictures, door knobs, lamps and electric switch covers prior to painting.
• Remove old finishes by stripping, sanding, wire brushing, burning or using water and/or abrasive blasting.
• Smooth surfaces, using sandpaper, scrapers, brushes, steel wool and/or sanding machines.
• Wash and treat surfaces with oil, turpentine, mildew remover, or other preparations and sand rough spots to ensure that finishes will adhere properly.
• Bake finishes on painted and enamelled articles using baking ovens.
• Cut stencils and brush and spray lettering and decorations on surfaces.
• Erect scaffolding and swing gates or set up ladders to work above ground level.
• Select and purchase tools and finishes for surfaces to be covered, considering durability, ease of handling, methods of application and customers' wishes.
• Spray or brush hot plastics or pitch them onto surfaces.
• Use special finishing techniques such as sponging, ragging, layering or faux finishing.
• Waterproof buildings using waterproofers and caulking.
• Maintain correct records and general recordkeeping.
• Follow established protection procedures.
• Clean up the job site after work and return equipment and tools.
• Maintain a clean work environment.
Tools & technology:
A variety of different tools are used to remove and apply paint, wallpaper and other finishes: Steam wallpaper strippers, scrapers, ladders, sanders and liquid paint removers to remove previous finishes, Drop Sheets, Adhesive tape, Paint brushes, sponges, spray guns, rollers and even stencils. Wallpaper paste to apply wallpaper, Protective clothing and hats, especially in the sun, and also masks when dealing with paint fumes.
Knowledge of:
Residential and commercial/industrial practices and processes of the painting trade; paints, varnishes, lacquers, enamels, epoxies, paint removers, and related materials, and of their properties and application; applicable code requirements; methods and practices followed in the maintenance of tools, machinery, and equipment; occupational hazards of the painting trade and precautionary measures to be observed.
Qualifications/experience:
• Must have a minimum of one to two (1-2) years of experience preferred in a similar setting.
• Must hold at least Certificate III in Painting & Decorating.
• Must be able to communicate well in spoken and written English.
Special Requirements:
• Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting equipment (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking.
• Must be able to safely use manual tools and power equipment common in the construction trades.
• Must be able to handle hazardous materials safely and tolerate exposure to electrical hazards.
