This position is located within the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Safety and Environmental
Enforcement, Office of the Director, BSEE Deputy Director located in Sterling, VA; Anchorage, AK; New
Orleans, LA; or Houston, TX.
At the full performance level (GS-13) the major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the
following:
1. Keeps abreast of recent developments in FOIA law, including recent court and DOI decisions,
current legislative resolutions, or problems encountered within the FOIA program. Assists the
BSEE FOIA Officer as needed with developing BSEE FOIA processes that conform with the
procedures and policies established by DOI's FOIA Office with regard to the administration of the
FOIA.
2. Serves as the BSEE contact to external FOIA requesters and internal DOI employees to clarify
and resolve issues relating to specific FOIA requests or overall FOIA processes and procedures.
Prepares FOIA correspondence in accordance with DOI policy and guidance. Coordinates
responses with legal staff and management, as appropriate, and conducts reviews and briefs
management on requests of legally sensitive, controversial, or politically sensitive nature.
3. Assists to coordinate FOIA requests with congressional and court-ordered requests for the
BSEE as required. Assists in locating, organizing, and indexing records responsive to these
requests to the extent it overlaps with FOIA requests.
4. Keeps accurate records of information that has been released or withheld, which may serve as
a reference for future requests (to determine whether the material is in the public domain) and to
support responses to any potential appeal(s) and/or litigation.
5. Assists SOL or other government attorneys in the preparation of the Department's defense in
litigation. Works with DOI counsel and the United States Attorney's Office to develop reasonable
production schedules for the release of agency records
