The post holder will ensure effective communication throughout the multidisciplinary team and support a positive safety culture. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential for this role.

This is a new role and as our lead midwife for Induction of Labour and Planned Caesarean Sections you will:
· Lead coordination of Induction of Labour and Planned Caesarean Sections to maintain patient safety and flow through the service.
· Ensure safe, efficient and effective service user flow, whilst ensuring optimal bed utilisation through co-ordination of admissions.
· Plan, coordinate and facilitate induction of labour workshops for women, birthing people and their families.
· Plan, coordinate and facilitate planned caesarean section workshops for women, birthing people and their families.
· Support quality improvement work related to induction of labour and planned caesarean sections.
· Work clinically supporting women and birthing people who have a planned admission.
The post holder will inspire confidence and innovation amongst our incredible workforce, who together, ensure the women/birthing people and staff are safe, cared for and listened too. They will work collaboratively with the clinical maternity teams, maternity managers, governance and education teams to provide seamless pathways of care and ensure a positive safety and team culture.
The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute Hospital in the London Borough of Hillingdon and offers a wide range of services including accident and emergency, inpatient care, day surgery, outpatient clinics and maternity services. The Trust’s services at Mount Vernon Hospital include routine day surgery, delivered at a modern treatment centre, a minor injuries unit and outpatient clinics.

1. Main duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical:
• To spend 50% of time clinically facing. This will include supporting the dailyplannedcaesarean section lists and working clinically on the antenatal ward supporting induction of labour.
• To review referrals and ensuretimelyappointments forinduction oflabour andplannedcaesarean sectionsas the midwifery lead withinthe multidisciplinary teamand liaise with women and birthing peopleregardingtheir admission.
• To prioritise inductions of labour andplannedcaesarean sections in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
• Toidentify, analyse, and interpret facts and information to ensure the management of a woman and birthing people isin accordance withrisk throughout their pregnancy journey.
• To coordinateinduction of labourandplannedcaesarean sectiondailyand optimisecapacitywhilst ensuring a safe environment for women and birthing people and their families. This will include the development and communication of plans for IOL to women and birthing people and the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT).
• To plan, coordinate andfacilitateinduction of labour workshops for women, birthingpeopleand their families.
• To plan, coordinate andfacilitateplanned caesarean section workshops for women, birthingpeopleand their families.
• To attend any meetingsappropriate tothe post holder’s role, ensuring effective communication within the team and leading on actions to be undertaken and applications of recommendations. Meetings may include themultidisciplinary labour ward handovers, safety huddles and Trust bed meetings.
• To referwomenand birthing peopleto other practitioners when needs and risks are beyond one’s own scope of practice.
• To contribute to supporting and nurturing student midwives’ education and professional development by acting as a practice supervisor/assessor.
• To support women and birthing people, encouraging them to promote their own health and wellbeing and that of their baby and to express their interests and concerns.
• To support service users in their patient journey through the service by ensuring clear lines of communication and advise is provided around any potential delays and act as a contact for womenand birthing peopleto raise concerns.
• To support, develop and deliver safe,effectiveand outstanding care for women and birthing people and their families.
Professional:
• Practice in line with the NMC Code of Practice.
• Provide guidance and advice for staff asrequired.
• Develop a sense of social responsibility towards members of the working team.
• To ensure that all Trust standards aremaintainedand monitored to improve the quality of care to all whomcome into contact withservices.
• Toparticipatein team, professional and personal development activities and promote commitment to continuous development and improvement.
• Tomaintainand develop own professional competence and remain responsible for meeting the requirements of Revalidation (NMC).
• To always act as a positive senior midwifery ‘leader-ambassador’ by providing helpful and professional clinical and non-clinical support to all on-site staff,familiesand visitors.
• To display a mature approach to challenging situations, including unexpected situations, including complex communication, suchasdelivering sensitive news.
• Be involved in continuous monitoring andmaintainingquality standards of clinical practice and care through a variety of ways, for example, audit.
• Practice within the policies, procedures,protocolsand guidelines agreed by the Trust.
Management:
• Tomaintainup to date informationon induction of labour andplannedcaesarean sectionsandanticipatedadmissions within the clinical areas to drive patient safety and efficient use of staff and resources.
• To coordinate the bookingof all induction of labours andplannedcaesarean sections for women and birthing people.
• To inform theLabour Ward and Maternity Triage Manager andHead of Midwifery when there is disparity between existing bedcapacityand the placementofplannedadmissionswith onwardescalationto the Director of Midwifery asappropriate.
• Using escalation guidance, work in collaboration withLabour Ward and Maternity Triage ManagerandHead of Midwifery when there are risingcapacitypressures.
• To address any verbal complaints received fromwomen and birthing people and their familiesin real timeandattemptto resolve these at a local level when a verbal complaint is being presented.
• To design and develop project plans for quality improvements andservicedevelopments both in the provider site and across the LMNSasrequired.
• Towrite and/or contribute to relevant reports asrequired.
• To make sure recommendations from national guidelines, policies and strategies are consistently included in localpractice.
• To ensure efficient and effective use of resources.
Governance:
• Toparticipatein audits and quality improvement programmesin accordance withchange management.
• To support andparticipatein guideline/SOP developmentasrequired.
• Todemonstratea shared responsibility for ensuring that key recommendations from serious incidents are effectively implemented and learning gets to the maternity staff delivering care.
• Toparticipatein clinical or other levels of audit to aid service evaluation and development.
• To ensure clinical incident reporting takes place andfacilitatechanges to reduce risk.
• Have a clear understanding and ability to implement principles of Information Governance and how to manage situations where this may be breached.
Leadership:
• To work collaboratively with the senior team to implement, deliver and evaluate effectivecapacityand flow through the maternity inpatient’s services.
• To collaborate with the Senior Midwifery and Operational Teams to ensure the delivery ofhigh standardsof clinical care.
• Tomaintain, monitor and evaluate standards of care within the midwifery team and toassistin the implementation of recommendations from Government or Professional bodies and CQC Regulations in relation to maternity care.
• Toassistin the development of health and safety standards and the monitoring of these standards, ensuring that Trust Policies are adheredto,and equipment is used correctly andin accordance withthe Health and Safety at Work act.
• Tofacilitatethe implementation of national and local quality initiatives to improve service delivery e.g.

• To be a visible role model within all the clinical areas providing support and access to all teams.
Communication and Teamwork:
• To communicate effectively with the wider multidisciplinary teams to ensure high quality individualised care, for all women and birthing people, including those who are not offered induction of labour, who decline induction of labour and who make birth choices outside of clinical guidelines. This care will respect women and birthing people’s autonomy, privacy, and dignity.
• To ensure effective communication between the labour ward and antenatal ward.
• To communicate effectively with a wide range of people to explore complex issues and to make complex decisions.
• Competently and sensitively manage information concerning women and birthingpeople’smedical conditions and provide information displaying qualities of compassion and empathy when dealing withdifficult situations.
• Toestablishand maintain channels of effective verbal and written communication within area of responsibility, the department, and the Trust where applicable.
• To communicate in an effective andina timelymanner within the multi-professional team.
• To inform WardManagers,Matronsand other members of the Senior Midwifery Team of issues relating to the clinical and operational management of their areas.
• Tosupport the development of a safety culture within the context of resource constraints and multiple conflicting priorities.
• Overcome communication barriers where they occur and seekappropriate servicesto ensure inclusivity, equality and diversity for all women and birthing people and the workforce.
• To communicate and undertake sensitive conversationswith women and birthing people and their families such as around delays ininduction of labour and where transfer to alternative units may be recommended but not readily accepted and delays or cancellation ofplannedcaesarean sections.
• To provide specialisedadviceand support to womenand birthing peoplethrough their admission.
• Communicate and liaise with the multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams to promote effective and quality care ensuring that confidentiality isrespected at all times.
• Contributes to systems in place to proactivelydisseminateinformation, e.g. team briefings, ward / departmental meetings, so that staff are kept informed.
Other Responsibilities:
• Maintain compliance with Trust mandatory trainingin order toprovide safe care.
• To be aware of responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of women/birthing people, visitors,staffand others, and tocomply withthe requirements of the Health and Safety Regulations
