General Description:

Acts as an expert RN in clinical care of injured patients, coordinates trauma team care delivery and system throughput.  

Essential Functions/Duties:

• Provides clinical command and control during trauma activations.
• Responsible for the day to day operation of the trauma emergency department.
• Provides oversight of care for injured patients based on evidence-based trauma care guidelines/protocols.
• Provides clinical expertise and input on procedures including, but not limited to, Trauma Intensive Care Unit, Post-Trauma Clinical Unit, Rapid Response, Mass-Transfusion Protocol, and intravenous access.
• Act as the hospital liaison with all pre-hospital emergency medical services and referring facilities throughout Oklahoma and surrounding areas.
• Coordinate, monitor and document patient and clinical care activities.
• Participate in ongoing performance improvement/patient safety processes related to the injured patient population.
• Promote and support a collaborative team approach in providing care for all injured patients.
• Communicate with clinical and management teams to execute and direct patient care services and system throughput.
• Participates in trauma program activities in support of injury prevention, community education, staff and system development.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required.  Bachelor of Science (or higher) in Nursing Board Approved Program preferred.

Experience: Two (2) years experience as an RN in Emergency/Trauma/Intensive Care. Or substitute a Master’s degree in Nursing for one (1) year of the required experience

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: 

• Current RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact RN License (eNLC). 
• Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.

Our unit focuses on intensive care for adult patients with cardiac, thoracic, and vascular diseases and or requiring surgeries related to these categories. Patient to nursing staff ratio is 2:1, or 1:1 for higher acuity patients. Our unit is considered the only center in Oklahoma that reports thoracic surgery data to the Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS). Focused patient care areas include post-operative cardiac surgery (minimally invasive and open coronary bypass graft, aortic root repair or replacement, Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), among others. Post-operative thoracic surgery populations cared for include esophagectomies, paraesophageal hernia repairs, fundoplications, video and or robot-assisted thoracotomies, lobectomies, and pneumonectomies, etc. Post-operative vascular surgeries include minimally invasive thoracic and abdominal endovascular aortic repairs (TeVAR/EVAR), bypass grafting of major arterial vessels (Fem-pop, pop-pop), peripheral artery stents, etc.

The OU Health Nurse Residency Program provides the graduate nurse with resources and rich experiences that will serve as a strong foundation for a successful nursing career. Minimum Qualifications:

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required:  Current RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact RN License (eNLC).  Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire. ACLS (American Heart Association) required within 3 months of hire.

Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques and procedures. Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Associate’s Degree in HVAC Technology/Mechanical Engineering required. An equivalent amount of education or experience may be substituted for minimum educational requirements.

Experience: Five (5) Years of experience as a licensed HVAC technician required, preferably in the healthcare field, including at least 1yr experience in a lead, supervisor, or project manager role.

Licensure/Certifications/Registrations Required:

State of Oklahoma Unlimited Mechanical Contractor’s license and Oklahoma Class 1 Boiler Operators license is required within (1) year of employment. Technician Type Universal EPA certification required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to understand and interpret regulations associated with The Joint Commission Life Safety and Environment of Care chapters, NFPA, CDC, Oklahoma State Department of Health, and OSHA. Excellent analytical skills are required in order to interpret and resolve complex technical issues, sometimes requiring original solutions in circumstances where the work product or service affects the design and operation of critical HVAC systems and equipment within OUMC. Strong interpersonal communication skills are required to interact with others and discuss complex and sophisticated concepts and systems. The Neurosciences ICU consists of 18 patient beds and admits patients with various neurological diseases and conditions. RNs in this unit experience 2:1 patient to nurse ratios. As a nationally recognized Comprehensive Stroke Center, many of the patients in the NSICU are recovering from Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Strokes. Patients come to the NSICU post operatively for craniectomies, craniotomies, carotid endarterectomies, post-carotid stenting, thrombectomies, aneurysmal clippings and coils, invasive spinal surgeries, and many other specialized procedures. The patient population frequently requires specialized invasive monitoring with bolts and external ventricular drains. In addition to the specialized neurological care that these patients require, the patients are also treated for various types of shock, renal failure, respiratory failure, and other common diagnoses seen in critically ill patients.
