The position is a Maintenance Worker for the Sandy Flat Sub-District of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The position is duty stationed in Sandy Flat, North Carolina (Watauga County). The primary purpose of the position is to perform water utility maintenance and operation duties. Incumbent is engaged in performing a variety of complex repairs, maintenance, adjustments, modifications and preventive maintenance on facilities, equipment, and system.

The selectee operates and maintains equipment and vehicles like farm style tractors, bobcat skid steers, backhoe's, pickup with trailers, air compressors, pneumatic hammers, plate compactors, pneumatic and steel faced compactors, motorized brooms, snow plows and pressure washers. Selectee also digs holes, mixes and pours concrete, installs drainage pipe, cleans culverts and auto gates. This position requires heavy physical effort to haul materials and equipment to work locations. This position works under a trails maintenance leader or other higher-graded employees. The incumbent primarily assists in maintenance and construction of graded and paved trails, trail drainage, trail bridges, and guard rails. Assists in the installation, repair and replacement of water diversion bars, cribbing and retainer walls. Removes windfalls, rockslides, surface outcroppings and debris from trails. Builds up tread surfaces in eroded areas. Installs stepping stones at creek crossings where bridges cannot be constructed. Voyageurs National Park is located in northern Minnesota. The park encompasses over 218,000 acres of boreal forest and water along the Canadian border. The park is a class one air shed, and the lakes of the park are identified as outstanding resource value waters within the State. Lakes include Rainy, Kabetogama, Namakan and Sand Point; along with 26 smaller remote lakes.

The area made up a portion of the Voyageurs highway that opened the North American Continent to European settlement. The waterways of the park were integral to the growth and movement of the Ojibwe people of the region. The majority of work in the park requires access via boat in the summer or snowmobile in the winter. During winter operations the park maintains over 100 miles of snowmobile trails and 25 miles of ice roads.

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Major Duties:

• The primary function of Maintenance Workers is to clean restrooms, stock restroom supplies and clean other facilities by vacuuming, sweeping, dusting and cleaning windows.
• In addition, maintenance workers collect and dispose of trash from roadsides and parking lots, remove limbs and other obstructions from roadsides and grounds.
• Maintenance workers also operate small equipment such as leaf blowers, string trimmers and hedge trimmers; in addition to operating push lawn mowers and zero turn mowers.
