Your new role
My client is recruiting for a Senior / Principal Environmental Consultant to join their growing team, with the potential to base yourself at any of their U.K. offices (Belfast, Cardiff, Carlisle, Dundee, Edinburgh, Forres, Glasgow, Inverness, Leicester or Manchester).
You will primarily work from home in the short term, unless this is unavailable to you. You will be provided with all IT equipment and software/services require to facilitate your efficient home working. Long term arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate - they are a flexible employer and are willing to consider any arrangement that is desirable to you.
You will coordinate the delivery of environmental permitting projects across the UK, and will have experience in one or more of the following preferably in a consultancy role; environmental permit applications and variations, environmental impact assessment using appropriate tools e.g. D1 Calculations, H1 Software Tool, SCAIL, ADMS and BAT.
What you'll need to succeed

• You will posses an Honours or Masters Degree in Chemical, Process, Mechanical, Civil or Environmental Engineering, the physical sciences, or similar, and
• Full U.K. driving licence
• Professional chartership(s) would be viewed favourably.
• Experience with Environmental permit (e.g. Industrial Emissions Directive, via PPC/EPR/IPC) applications and variations.
• Experience with regulatory liaison and negotiation e.g. SEPA, EA, NIEA, EPA.
• Experience with environmental impact assessment using appropriate tools e.g. D1 Calculations, H1 Software Tool, SCAIL, ADMS.
• Experience with best available technique (BAT) review of plant, equipment and processes.

Your new role

They are looking for experienced and highly motivated Senior Ecologists (or Ecologists close to that level), with a minimum Level 1 bat survey licence and Level 1 GCN survey licence, to join their ecology team within the environmental planning division in the Midlands to bolster their ability to deliver projects across the North, Midlands and South.

Key Responsibilities:

• Designing and managing ecological surveys and associated mitigation from inception through to completion of projects.
• Undertaking extended phase 1 habitat surveys/ UK Habs surveys to accurately describe and map habitats and assess their potential to support notable/protected species.
• Undertaking phase 2 surveys for legally protected species.
• Producing a range of ecological reports to a high standard.
• Liaising with clients, professional advisors, contractors and the general public.
• Embodying their values of integrity, commitment, empowerment, sustainability, wellbeing and innovation.
• Managing and mentoring junior team members.
• Building and maintaining effective working relationships at all levels within the business, with clients, subcontractors and other third parties (regulators, statutory consultees, etc.).

What you'll need to succeed

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject (2:1 or higher)
• At least four years' experience as a professional ecological consultant.
• Good ecological field skills covering a range of protected species and habitats.
• A sound understanding of the legislative and planning policy framework as it relates to ecology and nature conservation.
• The ability to write concise, high quality, technical reports (including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and Ecological Impact Assessments) in line with CIEEM guidelines.
• Ideally, experience of reviewing technical ecology reports written by others.
• Experience undertaking BREEAM 2018 assessments.
• Experience of using the latest Defra Biodiversity Metric.
• Experience of writing fee proposals, project management and client liaison.
• Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
• Good commercial awareness.
• Membership of CIEEM
• Bat and GCN Natural England protected species licence (Level 1 or above)
• Full clean UK driving licence

Your new role
This role is home-based (although you're welcome in the office as much as you like) and would be ideally suited to a Senior Ecologist that wants to help drive the deliver BNG services to clients, including surveys, assessments and advice.

Naturally, you'll be familiar with best practice standards and legislative drivers that apply to UK habitats and species. However, you will be primarily responsible for the delivery of BNG services for wide array of their clients' projects and assisting with the QC of the BNG work of junior colleagues.

You will need to demonstrate that you can produce BNG assessments as well as on/off-site management plans and associated supporting documents to a very high standard.

What you'll need to succeed

• An environmental-related undergraduate degree and postgraduate degree in a water-environment, ecology or sustainability specialism (advantageous).
• Working towards or have achieved Chartership (CEnv or C.WEM) with a relevant body (CIWEM, IEMA, CIEEM).
• Environmental sustainability experience within built and natural asset-owning organisations such as the water sector (advantageous), renewables and energy, land-use and transport.
• Proficient in Geospatial tools e.g qGIS, ArcGIS etc
• Knowledge and use of the BNG Metric.
• Knowledge and use of wider environmental and social valuation tools and methods e.g ENCA, CIRIA's BeST, ORVal.
• Evidenced experience of working with regulators (EA, NE) and stakeholders
• Evidenced experience of working within regulatory environmental legislation, consents and permit requirements.
• An understanding of the environmental receptor constraints and opportunities associated with engineering-infrastructure project planning and delivery.
• Hold a full UK driving licence.

What you'll need to succeed

• MSc qualified (or higher) in Hydrogeology or similar, or equivalent - ideally.
• Chartered or working towards chartership.
• Thorough understanding of UK environmental legislation including the environmental permitting regime in England and Wales.
• Highly numerate with strong analytical / statistical skills.
• Experience in analysing large datasets.
• In depth knowledge of groundwater quality and contaminant behaviour is essential
• Proficiency in the application of hydrogeological software and environmental modelling (LandSim, EA hydraulic containment models and probabilistic modelling software (e.g Crystal ball)).
• Professional experience and proven track record of consultancy work related to understanding of geology and hydrogeology within the waste sector.

Your new role
Based within the advisory team, you will develop and nurture your own client accounts and oversee delivery, providing environmental guidance and support for them to maintain compliance with legislation and enhance their environmental performance.
