Your new role
The Senior Software Developer role involves working within the Data Acquisition Team. In this position, you'll collaborate with other software engineers, supporting various experimental techniques and developing data acquisition capabilities.


Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership within the data acquisition group to develop, test, maintain and support the ongoing software development
• Lead a team delivering medium-scale projects (typically with direct business impact and firm deadlines), providing direction, coaching, support and motivation
• Use technical and professional knowledge to identify opportunities for technical or process improvement across the organisation, supported by the team
• Bring and apply excellent engineering experience and deep domain knowledge to the Data Acquisition group to ensure that developed systems meet the goals of innovative, world-leading science and engineering.

What you'll need to succeed

• Experience of managing a small team of developers providing technical leadership, mentorship and project management
• Good working knowledge of Java & Python
• Experience with leading projects with strict deadlines & tight budgets
• Experience with collaborating with a large organisation and multiple stakeholders

Your new role

• Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of cloud solutions for research projects
• Create and update documentation for the implementations
• Set up monitoring of the implementations to inform capacity planning and help spot potential problems & Optimise costs
• Identify and resolve problems promptly
• Provide training and reporting to researchers and collaborate with the researchers, Information Compliance and Information Security teams to ensure datasets are safely and appropriately managed
• Communicate effectively with colleagues at all levels both within the institution and providers to identify needs, risks and develop appropriate solutions
• Write technical articles and documentation at a national level, on topics in the use of cloud computing and/or related to specific projects
• Ensure compliance with data regulations

What you\'ll need to succeed

• PhD with computational research experience or similar level of industry experience
• Hands-on engineering experience with cloud platforms
• Understanding of cloud security and compliance
• Experience with scaling and performance optimisation
• Good understanding of technology stacks from networks up to applications.
• Shell scripting and related tooling (awk, sed, grep etc).
• Working experience of containerisation and microservices.
• Infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Pulumi.
• Strong experience coding and automating tasks in a high-level language, preferably Python.
• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
• Interpersonal skills, ability to collaborate closely with researchers
