EDF Energy are recruiting within the Nuclear Skills Alliance (NSA) team, to develop and deliver high quality training across our existing and new power stations, ensuring that Nuclear safety remains our overriding priority and helping to enhance and support our diverse workforces skillsets.

The opportunity

As our Nuclear Operations Training Instructor, your role will be to support Nuclear Operations, decommissioning and Nuclear New Build (NNB).

You will be joining a team with a wide variety of skills, experience and knowledge to train, upskill and support you in meeting our stakeholder requirements to ensure our workforce is able to meet their commitments safely and to time, cost and quality.

You will be responsible for the development and delivery of key training areas adhering to the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) process, ensuring Nuclear Operations and NNB personnel have the requisite initial knowledge to carry out their roles safely and effectively. The successful applicant must ensure high quality and accuracy of training material, adherence to fleet training standards and the highest standards of training delivery.

We have two full time roles within the area of Nuclear Operations. All roles are based within the South-West of the UK, working to a hybrid model, however some travel may be required when necessary to support training programmes.

What you’ll be doing

As an EDF Nuclear Skills Academy (NSA) Training Instructor, you can impact the performance of the organisation through training that meets the needs of the business. You will work closely with our customers to support knowledge transfer, provide workforce mentoring whilst learning and developing your own skills and forging an exciting future within a growing industry.

The key duties the successful candidate will be required to carry out:


- Development and delivery of area specific training material.
- Support classroom training and simulator training environments, as well as providing coaching and mentoring of trainees to expedite learning.
- Act as course coordinator for responsible training areas.
- Become a subject matter expert for their areas of delivery.
- Ensure Nuclear Safety, Industrial Safety and Operational Experience (OPEX) are embedded throughout the training material.
- Form and maintain relationships with stakeholders, supporting the development of high-quality training material and delivery.
- Perform analysis to ensure the training meets the organisation and stakeholder expectations and propose changes if identified and required.
- When and if required: liaise with external contractors to provide training support services.
- Fully contribute to the NSA business plan to achieve of our company organisational goals.


Who you are

For this role, you will have a minimum of a HNC in a relevant technical subject with experience in an engineering or operations related discipline such as Nuclear/Conventional power generation, however relevant experience in other related industries will be considered.

You’ll have strong Microsoft Office skills such as PowerPoint and Excel and be able to effectively plan your program areas to meet stakeholder requirements. You’ll possess confident communication and presentation skills and be confident to work in a team environment and autonomously as required.

The role will require an agreed degree of mobility, to deliver relevant training away from your base location (travel, accommodation etc. are managed within the company travel policy).

Ideally you’ll have knowledge of training processes; Systematic Approach To Learning (SAT/DSAT), modern learning methods and experience of bringing these to bear in the development and delivery of training. (Training is provided).

Experience in the use of training development tools (Vision) would be advantageous but training will be provided.

Ideally you’d hold a recognised teaching/training qualification or have experience within an education/instructional environment. (Instructor techniques and continued progression training will be provided). Also you’ll ideally have an understanding of the key aspects of nuclear power plant systems / components however training will be provided.

The Opportunity…

We are looking for a Fire Safety Engineer to join our Nuclear Services Business.

Nuclear Services is a specialist technical area, and we bring together technical capabilities to support the Hinkley Point C (HPC) and Sizewell C (SZC) nuclear new build projects and the existing Nuclear Operations operating stations and decommissioning sites.

As a Fire Safety Engineer, you will ensure the HPC design is developed in line with Nuclear New Build requirements and within the project schedule, to allow detailed design and construction to proceed as planned.

In addition, you will be reviewing and conducting fire hazard analysis from the HPC responsible designer and confirming acceptability to meet UK nuclear safety requirements. The work also extends to maintaining fire safety on the operating and defueling AGRs plus support to Britain’s only PWR, Sizewell B.

- Responsible for oversight and acceptance of fire strategy and system documents, fire zoning reports and drawings, and other supporting documents. Conducting surveillance activities to support this.
- Technically reviewing fire safety analysis work from the HPC responsible designer and confirming acceptability to meet UK nuclear safety requirements.
- Modelling and analysing the impact of hazards on overall plant safety
- primarily focussing fire and explosion.
- Monitoring design changes arising from suppliers and construction activities.
- Developing solutions to issues identified, making recommendations and pursuing through to closure.



Who you are…

Your background may include some of the following:


- Degree-level or equivalent qualification in engineering or scientific field.
- Experience in design and safety principles in modern high hazard industries.
- Experience in the application of UK and international Fire codes and standards.
- An appetite for developing practical solutions to problems and following through to completion.
- Ability to work independently, to plan and manage design reviews, and work directly with designers.
- Strong evidence of continuing professional development.


Desirable, noting that this intended to be a spread of desired skills & experience, it is not anticipated that a single candidate will be expert in all areas:


- A Chartered Engineer with a relevant body such as the Institute of Fire Engineers.
- Application of fire and explosion modelling tools (e.g. CFAST).
- Experience UK nuclear safety cases, including application of ALARP principles.
- Experience of systematic hazard analysis on plant important to safety.
- Knowledge of Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR), Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (AGR) and European Pressurised Water Reactor (EPR) designs.
- Experience in working on the development of fire systems for life and asset protection, passive fire protection and commissioning.
- Experience of Fire and Rescue Service operations or emergency management and response.

What you’ll be doing


- Build the Product vision and roadmap for device leasing in collaboration with the Enterprise Product Manager, for communication to and acceptance by key stakeholders.
- Break the roadmap down into incremental deliverables as part of quarterly planning events.
- Manage and provide functional leadership to one or more product teams consisting of EDF resources, outsourced partners and service providers.
- Oversee the replacement of the existing Managed Print service with a modern, cloud-based solution with new leased multi-function printers and assure the outsourced service.
- Establish and continually improve the desktop and laptop device leasing process across the business from procurement to delivery and return.
- Assure and continuously improve the outsourced mobile device leasing service by analysing data and feedback from users.
- Work closely with multiple teams and stakeholders to ensure that the leasing service is efficient and cost-effective.
- Develop and maintain relationships with vendors to ensure best prices and services for our organisation.
- Understand and analyse leased device demand profiles and establish forecasting models to meet this demand.

The Opportunity…

We are looking for a safety critical Software Engineer to join our Nuclear Services Business.

Your engineering work will directly support EDF’s nuclear new build projects at Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C, as well as EDF’s existing nuclear fleet operations. Your responsibilities will include some of the following:


- In-service support to the design and development of Safety Critical, software-based Control and Protection systems.
- Performing and supporting the qualification of software-based equipment. This may include the specification and/or performance of software assurance activities, these could include tool-based analysis of code, auditing activities, as well as authoring of test specifications, qualification plans, assessment reports and other safety-related justifications for the use of software in nuclear applications).
- Providing advice within EDF on the software aspects of Safety Related Instrumentation and Control (I&C), e.g. small commercial off-the-shelf devices, PLCs, as well as other large scale plant computer systems and their associated tools and applications.
- Acting as technical coordinator for software-related research projects, and contributing to the delivery of training on relevant technical topics

Each of the above may include:


- Production and/or verification of internally produced documentation and technical reviews and client acceptance of externally produced engineering and safety.
- Participating in discussions to resolve technical issues with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators.

What you’ll be doing…

We’re looking for you to play a pivotal role in safeguarding our operations against cyber threats. As a Cyber Risk Manager, you'll support and enable senior executive stakeholders across our nuclear licensees to gain a comprehensive understanding of cyber risks to our information, IT, and plant systems—whether regulated or non-regulated. Your responsibilities will include:


- Tracking and reporting on risk management activities and decisions across our vast nuclear estate, ensuring seamless coordination of cyber security risk management reporting and associated metrics.
- Providing management and oversight of risk licensee management policies, processes, and procedures to maintain a robust risk management framework.
- Convening and chairing the Nuclear Cyber Security Risk Forums, where you'll establish a common working-level view of cyber risk positions consistent with our Nuclear Cyber Security Strategy and the EDF cyber target operating model.
- Promoting risk management to enhance licensee understanding of their exposure and inform investment decisions through cyber security forums.
- Serving as the secretary, supporting the heads of Nuclear Security and Cyber Security & Information Assurance, and chairing relevant cyber security communities of practice to bolster the work of the Cyber Risk Forums.
- Supporting the running and attendance of SIRO's Oversight Boards, ensuring that licensee SIROs grasp their respective risk positions and can make informed decisions regarding risk treatment.
- Assisting in the analysis and presentation of cyber risks across our nuclear licensees, collaborating with key stakeholders such as the Head of CS&IA, licensee BISOs, and the EDF UK Office of the CISO.
- Managing external contractors and suppliers to ensure the successful delivery of our key accountabilities.

We are looking for a Fuel & Reactor Physics Technical Lead to join the team on a 12 month basis to take a leading role in defining and agreeing the technical scope of the forward fuel and reactor physics research programme as part of the wider Nuclear R&D Roadmap.

What you’ll be doing
We are growing a Fuel & Reactor Physics team within R&D. As part of this role, you will be pivotal in establishing the team and providing mentorship as part of your management responsibilities.
You will take a leading role in defining and agreeing the technical scope of the forward fuel and reactor physics research programme, as part of the wider Nuclear R&D Roadmap. You will lead and oversee a portfolio of research projects supporting the safe and efficient build, operation and decommissioning of EDF Energy nuclear plants and the development of new nuclear technologies.
You will identify and secure research funding from both internal and external sources through successful stakeholder management and overseeing of and contributing to project scope development and bid submissions.

As the Technical Lead, you will be providing strategic and technical leadership to cross-cutting scientific projects, therefore a strong experience in fuel and reactor physics related engineering challenges is essential for this role.

What you’ll be doing
In this role you will deliver R&D projects focusing on water chemistry for our EDF Nuclear plants. Working collaboratively with technical experts from across the varied business units within EDF UK, you will be looking at water based nuclear applications with Pressurised Water Reactors (PWRs) as the primary focus and advanced reactors and fusion applications.
As the Chemistry & Corrosion Research Engineer, you will work closely with colleagues across the wider EDF R&D UK team, EDF UK Nuclear Service and EDF France. You will collaborate with academia and other industrial partners to ensure the latest information and understandings of relevant topics are shared.
You will be supporting the team in building the water chemistry research capability and providing greater understanding of the influence of chemistry on degradation mechanism, contributing to improved equipment reliability for safe and reliable operation of nuclear power plants.
Who you are
We are looking for somebody with a chemistry, corrosion science or engineering background and strong industrial/research experience on chemistry and corrosion related engineering challenges. It would be beneficial if you had experience of working on research projects related to PWR technology.
You will have solid knowledge in Nuclear Plant Chemistry and the ability to work with multiple organisations and stakeholders, both internal and external. You’ll demonstrate excellent organisation and time management with evidence of delivering projects and research work which has made an impact.

What you’ll be doing
In this role, you will work on the development of reactor physics methods to support the operating fleet of reactors and future reactor technologies. Who you are
As the Fuel & Reactor Research Engineer, you will have a scientific or engineering background with a good understanding of reactor physics codes (MCNP, Serpent, OpenMC) or fuel technology (e.g. fuel design, fuel integrity, fuel performance modelling). It would be extremely beneficial to have prior experience of the nuclear industry. We are looking for somebody with excellent stakeholder management skills, who can build and maintain strong working relationships and work with multiple stakeholders spanning from scientific partners to business customers. What you’ll be doing
As the Research Engineer, you will support the development of structural integrity assessment methodology for current and future nuclear plants; including Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors (AGRs), Pressurised Water Reactor (PWRs), High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactors (HTGRs), other gen IV type reactors and fusion reactors.
You will ensure different parts of the EDF organisation and external collaborators have up to date information of the state of assessment methods and the delivery of assessment method development to meet internal and external customer needs. You’ll primarily be developing the EDF R5 and R6 assessment procedures which addresses fracture, creep, fatigue and creep-fatigue crack initiation and crack growth mechanisms. You’ll also be involved in the generation and interpretation of the supporting materials data. Wider engagement with ASME and AFCEN design codes will also form an important part of this role.
You will take responsibility for engaging with industrial customers to understand their needs and define the R&D objectives for work to be delivered by the AR&SI team, academic partners, the wider EDF group and/or external organisations. You will be responsible for monitoring the progress towards R&D objectives and effectively communicating this with key stakeholders. You will work collaboratively with academic and industrial partners to help deliver improvement to assessment methodology. You will engage in forums such as R5/R6 panels, ASME working group and AFCEN committees to maximise the value and impact of our R&D activities.
Who you are
We are looking for somebody with a scientific or engineering background, with industrial or academic experience in the use or development of structural integrity assessment methodology or materials data. Experience of the nuclear industry or other ‘high integrity’ industries would be of benefit.
You will have excellent communication skills coupled with strong stakeholder management skills to allow you to effectively communicate complex topics and provide important updates to multiple stakeholders.

The Opportunity

EDF has a number of opportunities for Safety Case Engineers across all of our licensees. These include roles within our Nuclear Generation business, supporting our generating and defueling power stations, as well as our Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C businesses, where we’re building a new generation of nuclear power stations.

The Role

The Design Authority (DA), as part of the licensee organisation, is responsible for developing the nuclear safety case and maintaining its integrity throughout the full lifecycle of the nuclear power plant.
As an experienced Safety Case Engineer working in a new build Design Authority (HPC or SZC), you will play an important role in the development and maintenance of the safety case. You will provide technical leadership in resolving challenging issues to support the construction, commissioning and the safe operation of the Nuclear Power Plant. You will have opportunities to gain experience and work in a variety of different aspects of the safety case from developing the main Safety Report through to safety justifications to support modifications. In your role you will be supported by and need to engage with a variety of disciplines within the wider organisation (Nuclear Analysis, Pressurised Water Reactor Technology, Construction, Commissioning and Operations), while also working with OEM designers/suppliers and internal/external regulators.
In our Nuclear Generation business safety case engineers are responsible for maintenance of the safety cases supporting normal operations and fault scenarios during the generation and defueling phases of operation. You will provide technical leadership to define and deliver safety case requirements to ensure compliance within a regulated environment. You will have opportunities to develop skills across a wide range of technical and plant engineering disciplines, through completion of planned work and providing support to address emergent challenges.

The Opportunity…

We are looking for a Fault Studies Engineer to join our Nuclear Analysis function as part of the Nuclear Services Business. Nuclear Services is a specialist technical area, and we bring together technical capabilities to support the Hinkley Point C (HPC) and Sizewell C (SZC) nuclear new build projects and the existing Nuclear Operations licensees.

As a Fault Studies Engineer, you will need to develop an understanding of the behaviour of plant under a wide range of fault conditions using safety analysis techniques, most of which require the application of complex computer codes.

Fault Studies specialists need to have, or be willing to develop, a very good understanding of the underlying science, (system operation, core neutronics, fuel modelling, fluid dynamics and heat transfer, material properties and degradation mechanisms). You will apply this understanding through the application of computer codes to calculate and analyse the plant's behaviour in extreme fault or accident conditions, so that relevant safety case assessments can be underpinned.

What you’ll be doing…

You will have a variety of responsibilities and opportunities potentially including:

- Supporting the development and maintenance of the group’s capacity to support plant safety cases for multiple licensees across all stages of the plant lifecycle.
- Technical review and acceptance of externally supplied work.

- Communicating analysis results through the production of clear, concise reports and presentations.

What you’ll be doing:


Joining the Nuclear part of the Generation Legal team, you will lead the charge in steering the business through significant legal matters, including:



- Construction: Negotiating and supporting the management of contracts for new facilities' construction and nuclear facilities' deconstruction, including dispute resolution.
- Commercial: Supporting the business in commercial contract negotiations for both operations and decommissioning, realising value and synergies across the supply chain.
- Projects: Leading strategic projects, including M&A activities, corporate reorganizations, and collaboration opportunities with government bodies.
- Property: Negotiating and supporting the management of lease arrangements, licenses, and freehold sales to facilitate ongoing operations.
- Intellectual Property Rights: Understanding, overseeing, and advising on complex IPR rights across different technologies.

What you’ll be doing

In this role, your primary accountabilities will include:


- Play a significant part in the documentation and continual refresh of the Nuclear Operations IT strategy
- aligning IT to business capabilities. Work with key business stakeholders to align technology investments and innovation to the key business objectives and drivers.
- Driving a data centric strategy to transform our business bringing thought leadership and strategic direction to our growing data and analytics capabilities.
- Bring Information Architecture best practice to our design and architecture process
- Create exciting and engaging strategic plans, views and strategies which will be used to drive investment and change within our business
- Ensure the organisation's business processes and information flows are correctly modelled, and that the information architecture to support these is put in place, maintained up to date, aligned to the data management lifecycle and communicated to all levels of management.
- Build the Information Model to ensure it underpins the information management strategy and maximises value for Nuclear Operations;

- Where information is mastered,
- The interactions and flows of key information assets,
- How the provenance of information can be determined and demonstrated,
- Who owns information and hence the classification of the data,
- Where the greatest challenges lie, in terms of a single version of the truth.


- Support and guide Business Architects and Solution Architects to provide guidance, proposals and solution options that solve business challenges and needs
- Understand the current and future information needs of the business and translate these into services to be delivered
- Engage with EDF Group, Enterprise IT and a wide range of IT delivery partners to align the Nuclear Operations IT Strategies to the wider EDF Technology strategies and to ensure alignment to market trends
- Collaborate with the wider EDF UK and EDF Group Architecture community to share knowledge and best practice.
- In partnership with key stakeholders, across the business and IT, the Nuclear Operations Enterprise Architect will develop, maintain and support elements of the Nuclear Operations IT principles, standards and good practice documents i.e. the design guidance and patterns against which Nuclear Operations will design and deliver all IT solutions.
- Take the lead in managing Integration Governance within Nuclear Operations and ensuring common and consistent approaches are taken. They will also define the views and information in the Enterprise Architecture repository and where necessary populate this information.
- Act as a champion for IT Innovation within the Nuclear Operations business, effectively defining, owning and delivering the innovation agenda based on the Nuclear Operations IT and business strategies and focussing efforts when they can yield most benefit and focussing on establishing strong business relationships to facilitate this.
- Act as a point of reference for Integration to the Nuclear Operations IS Community and wider EDF Energy IT community; in particular, provide guidance on relevant architecture matters, new technology, industry trends and associated business enablers that will support business strategy.
- Manage, mentor and coach architects and designers as required.
- Provide technical assurance for large projects/programmes to ensure that solutions will meet the specified requirements. Where appropriate direct conceptual and logical designs and oversee detailed designs from a Nuclear Operations Enterprise Architecture point of view, i.e. ensure that designs comply with standards, IT strategy, and architectural blueprints.
- Engage at executive and senior leadership levels within Nuclear Operations to provide thought leadership and strategic guidance regarding IT strategy to ensure it can best support EDF Energy’s Nuclear Operations business.


Who you are

The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent and/or be able to demonstrate significant experience in the energy or relevant sector. Preferably, you will have architectural design experience with appropriate training and/or qualification in solution design. You will be TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework) qualified or aware. This role demands both a thorough and broad knowledge of technologies and digital services but also real creative flair. The role requires that you are able to create innovative, engaging and compelling narratives around the future of digital in our organisation. The ability to communicate and enthuse stakeholders in the adoption of digital services is critical. Ideally, we are looking for candidates who have real world experience of establishing best practice EA services in to a forward thinking and transforming digital business. The role will offer the opportunity to establish a future and strategic EA practice so having knowledge and experience in this area will be essential.

This role is a great development opportunity so ideally you will possess some or all of these attributes; A broad, strategic outlook, with ability to demonstrate very good communication skills, capable of leading discussion on design issues, and delivering sound decisions, based upon consensus and the application of standards and best practise. We’re looking for strategic thinkers with experience of leadership within a complex organisation, and establishing technical credibility from the outset and creativity in the development of new approaches.

You should have sensitivity to business constraints, ambitions and operational objectives in area of assignment, experience of team working and co-operation and capable of delivering relevant project documentation, in line with standards. An excellent awareness of IT technology pertinent to their domain and interest in maintaining that awareness is ideal. The ability to work under pressure is key.
