Job Description:

The Director of Development for the Brown University Sports Foundation (Annual Fund & Operations) is responsible for the planning, implementation, and management of a comprehensive annual fund program as well as overseeing the entirety of the operations, including programming, marketing and communications, on behalf of the BUSF to assure the program’s continuing role as an Ivy League leader in Athletics fundraising. 

The Director of Development will oversee the $5M+ BUSF annual fund program including planning, pipeline development, marketing, messaging, hyper-giving days, and the overall strategy and execution for the program. This BUSF annual fund program is critical to the success of the overall $50M+ Brown Annual Fund on an annual basis and the Director provides crucial leadership and support, both directly and through the management of BUSF annual fund staff, to the Division of Advancement as a partner, collaborator and key stakeholder in the overall annual process to support the necessary outcome for the Division.

The Director will also be individually responsible for raising $1 million or more annually as plan manager and/or primary solicitor. The Director’s individual portfolio will include active, major gift prospects with a rated capacity of $100,000 or more. The candidate must have the ability to work with a diverse range of constituents including donors, trustees, and volunteers, and demonstrate a capacity to exceed major fundraising goals in close collaboration with the Executive/Senior Director as well Advancement leadership and all prospect managers across the Division of Advancement. The Director will also maintain oversight of 4 varsity and/or premiere club programs (this number may be adjusted depending upon size/complexity of sports) which Brown is seeking to support through annual, endowment and capital support. Through this work, the Director is charged with increasing the number of leadership and major gift donors across these programs by developing and implementing strategies that will maximize donor engagement and philanthropy.

Through direct management, the Director will provide strategic oversight for at least three subordinates with the following responsibilities: 1. marketing, communications, and fundraising for Brown’s $5M+ annual use fundraising program; 2. operations specific to budget, data compilation, reporting & stewardship; 3. leadership support of all annual fundraising for all athletics priorities; 4. All BUSF engagement programs and events including related strategy, planning, budget and execution. The Director will be responsible for connecting these direct reports to Brown’s overall fundraising missions and values and with that charge, will lead and mentor these BUSF staff members to help foster deep collaborations across the Division of Advancement while ensuring a close working relationship between programs and fundraising teams. The Director will measure success not only through the total dollars raised on an annual basis, but also through the activities and programming successes that are necessary to achieve the overall fundraising goals. The Director will engage as a thought partner for the staff they lead and set an example as a manager of collaboration, teamwork, collegiality, empathy, professionalism and accountability. 

The Director is responsible for leading strategic development of events and marketing specific to Athletics for the broader Brown community on behalf of Advancement. They are tasked with developing focused high-level activities, broad-based engagement opportunities, and strategic marketing and communications that support annual, major, and principal gift work as well as broad alumni engagement. Related, the Director provides content from Athletics that supports prospect awareness, advances cultivation, and improves BUSF stewardship efforts. Expectations include close collaboration with, among others, the Associate Vice President for Advancement Communications and the Senior Director for Communications and Marketing, to plan and implement all Athletics campaign messaging related to capital projects, endowment campaigns and the annual fund. The Director will have oversight of the broad-based communication strategy for the Brown Athletics community as it relates to Advancement. 

The Director provides oversight for all BUSF administration of budget and business practices to create the highest level of efficiency and financial responsibility possible within the organization. The Director will be tasked with focusing on accuracy, accountability and efficiency within all budget and business practices to maximize the efficacy of the BUSF annually.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree required. 

• Minimum of 6 years of experience in a related field such as fundraising, higher education, nonprofit, development, sales, customer relations, volunteer management, and/or marketing.

• Minimum ​2 years management experience required.

• Programmatic strategy development and management experience 

• Computer proficiency and knowledge of CRM systems.

• Working knowledge of email and calendars, the Windows environment, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other software such as Adobe Acrobat, donor databases, etc. 

• Must be able and willing to work occasional evenings and weekends.

• Must be able and willing to travel throughout the United States to attend relevant programs and events.

Job Description:

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Employee and Labor Relations (AVP), the Director of Labor Relations (Director) provides proactive advice, guidance, and recommendations for appropriate courses of action that arise out of various employment situations involving employees who are members of a collective bargaining unit and other labor-management matters to ensure that departmental priorities are accomplished.

The Director will be critical to developing, growing, and sustaining strong partnerships between UHR and the Administrative and Academic departments and bargaining units throughout the University. The Director will collaborate and influence a diverse group of departments and division leaders, fully understand their strategies, goals, and expectations, and provide thoughtful leadership and guidance on various labor relations matters to increase organizational effectiveness. The Director will also ensure alignment within UHR in managing services and processes that involve unionized employees or their managers and in delivering services and information to the University community. Likewise, they will advance the broader understanding of the relationship between effective HR management and University business functions. The Director will provide managerial oversight for the following roles within Labor Relations:

• Assistant Director for Labor Relations

• Labor Relations Data Specialist

In addition, in collaboration with the AVP, the Director will be responsible for the implementation and day-to-day administration of the University’s collective bargaining agreements for unionized employee, including graduate and undergraduate student employees.

The Director and Labor Relations will collaborate with the Office of General Counsel (OGC) and other units on related legal matters and will ensure the smooth administration of employee and student grievance and arbitration processes. This position will also work closely with UHR’s Director of Talent Acquisition and other campus partners to help create and sustain an effective student employment model that holistically supports and promotes positive experiences and outcomes for our students (unionized and non-unionized) at Brown.

Major Responsibilities:

• In collaboration with the AVP, implement and administer the University’s labor relations program for all unions at Brown, to include but not limited to, unions that serve graduate and undergraduate student employees.
• Support the AVP in planning, organizing, and leading negotiations for successor bargaining agreements, including analysis of benchmarking data and preparation of collective bargaining proposals.
• Provide expert advice and support to management and staff on labor relations matters in accordance with established Brown policies and procedures, legislative requirements, and existing collective bargaining agreements.
• Advise client departments in identifying, evaluating, and resolving human resource management issues and disciplinary actions with unionized employees; assist in issue resolution and provide consistent interpretation and application of HR best practices, Brown policies, collective bargaining rules, and employment laws so that managers and supervisors are equipped to effectively supervise unionized employees.
• Support the AVP in overseeing contractual grievance procedures including counseling department heads and/or designees at steps one and two of the contractual grievance process. Serve as the step three grievance officer, and as the first and second chair for arbitration matters.
• Provide coaching and counseling to managers and staff to effectively address disciplinary matters among unionized workers. Discuss potential options and assist with risks and rewards of various actions with supervisors and the AVP. Intervene with managers/supervisors when necessary concerning problems that adversely affect employee morale and productivity. Guide supervisors in writing performance improvement plans, probation extensions, disciplinary actions, and fair and balanced performance appraisals when necessary. Advise on and/or negotiate severance and outplacement services for employment separations. Respond to informal and formal grievances from union employees and offer resolution to supervisors and managers following timely investigations of concerns. Lead HR investigations of unionized employees in a thorough, timely, and impartial manner. Take steps to mitigate the influence of bias in HR and operational decisions. Develop strategies and put measures in place to identify, manage, and minimize risks/liability to university (e.g., legal, financial, health, safety, etc.). Identify solutions that address potential risk and provide recommendations on mitigation strategy. Apply critical thinking to information received from clients and evaluate courses of action for risk.
• Understand the institutional operations, functions, and external environmental factors to support the University’s mission and values by working in close partnership with managers, department heads, bargaining units, and union representatives. Identify opportunities for the design, analysis, and evaluation of change initiatives and build ongoing support for UHR solutions that meet operational needs among unionized units.
• Collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data to interpret and promote findings that evaluate HR initiatives and inform organization decisions and recommendations among unionized workforces. Lead and/or participate in organizational assessment and planning. In collaboration with the OGC, provide consultation to supervisors to implement employment actions resulting from restructuring, reclassification, compensation, and reductions in force/position. Support managers and staff to improve performance management goals. Partner with UHR colleagues and leaders to implement best practices that address employee and labor relations matters.
• Support the AVP in representing the University and preparing position statements regarding employment-related charges filed through federal or state agencies as appropriate.
• Review documents in support of operational decisions to restructure or reorganize departments that mitigate legal risk to the University. Collaborate with UHR departments to conduct timely analysis of staffing, compensation, or benefits data and communicate decisions to department supervisors.
• Participate in special projects such as HR system implementations, HR reporting on labor matters, systems testing, or other similar functions.
• Provide primary assistance to the AVP on project work or ongoing needs in areas such as: testing, designing, communicating, and training new users on labor relations software systems; identify needs and delivering appropriate labor-relations training programs for new and existing employees and supervisors; participate in collective bargaining negotiations, mediations or arbitrations; support investigations of EEO/Title IX complaints at the direction of the Office of Equity and Institutional Diversity.
• As required, serve as the backup to the AVP, for the University’s Labor Strategy Council.
• Perform special projects and support the establishment and maintenance of labor-relations data as needed.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution/college and a minimum of seven years’ professional-level labor relations experience

• A broad range of labor relations experience and competencies including practical and functional knowledge in this area, as well as broad human resources competencies

• Demonstrated proficiency in communication, conflict resolution, analysis and planning, creative problem solving, and consultation

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, sound business judgment, tact and diplomacy, and the ability to interact with employees at all levels of the University

• Knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations (e.g., FLSA, FMLA, ADA) and prior experience in consulting with internal clients on employee and labor relations matters

The Associate Director of Gift Compliance (“the AD”) contributes to Brown’s Advancement efforts by enabling and guiding fundraising staff through the process of developing, processing, and finalizing donor gift documentation. Job Description:

This position works with the Associate Vice President for Government and Community Relations to develop and execute strategies to advance Brown’s institutional mission and interests in the City of Providence. The position will represent Brown publicly, working with neighbors, community leaders, elected officials and staff. The Assistant Director of City Relations (ADCR) will focus on policy issues, communications, and project management. The ADCR brings the community to campus, develops and produces community communications, and oversees neighborhood relations. This position requires someone who is a self-starter, who is comfortable working independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

Support and Logistics

• Recommend community events for senior administrators; write memos to prepare them for events, and staff events as requested.
• Collaborate on urban initiatives; identify and elevate issues of importance to University.
• Collaborate with Facilities Management: coordinate neighbor engagement process for Institutional Master Plans, including planning and executing a broad range of meetings; notify neighbors of FM projects as needed.
• Work with colleagues in Residential Life, Student Conduct, DPS, Athletics and others to prevent and mitigate neighborhood issues and educate neighbors about resources for dealing with off-campus issues.
• Conceive, create and execute events to bring community constituencies to campus to highlight Brown’s local contributions and strengthen relationships.
• Support and participate in University working groups. 

Policy

• Work closely with the AVP for Government & Community Relations and other colleagues to support the University’s and the Office’s goals.
• Identify and implement projects that achieve the University’s strategic objectives within the City of Providence.
• Monitor and evaluate city legislation, attend Council and committee hearings and review proposed rules and regulations for impact on the University.
• Represent the University before the City Council, city agencies and Boards.
• Attend neighborhood meetings on behalf of Brown, including occasional evening or early morning meetings.
• Make connections between Brown and Providence-based partnerships or initiatives for mutual  benefit.
• Receive and respond to inquiries from neighbors and public officials and work with appropriate Brown colleagues to address issues.

About the Opportunity:

The Office of Research Strategy and Development provides research leadership and guidance by building research capacity and enabling federal funding for research at Brown as articulated in the Operational Plan for Growing the Research Enterprise at Brown, and the work outlined by the major research units to pursue the plan. The group accomplishes this by working with the Vice President for Research and other Brown leaders to develop and support the university’s research priorities; strengthening internal and external research networks, processes, skills and knowledge to continuously grow capacity for research excellence at Brown; and by increasing external research funding to enable world class research at Brown.

The Assistant Director of Research Development  serves in a strategic role within the Office of Research Strategy and Development and advances transdisciplinary collaboration and innovation by strategically coordinating the development of complex research teams and their funding proposals.  The incumbent will support current and develop emerging research strengths and capabilities across campus; lead the development of opportunities for strengthening faculty research and teaming capabilities including grant writing workshops and networking events, ideation meetings and brainstorming sessions; provide research development support for large scale multi-institutional proposals; will identify external funding opportunities and proactively build relationships among collaborating entities both internally and external to Brown. Responsibilities:

Enable funding for priority research by leading investigators in the preparation of large scale (>$5M) proposals for federal funding

In collaboration with the Research Strategy and Development team, while ensuring projects are in line with areas designated for growth through the strategic efforts of the Provost and VPR, identify resources needed for successful large scale proposal development and provide support as needed. Lead team building, project development, and project management roles to advance research aims and ensure success of research teams. Specialize in building complex proposals involving multiple researchers, often with collaborations and budgets spanning multiple departments, campuses, or institutions. Determine sponsor requirements and provide strategic advice for meeting sponsor requirements. Coordinate with department grant managers. Coach faculty throughout the proposal development process. Advise on specialized services (e.g. broader impacts, diversity plans, cost sharing, management plans) and identify appropriate sources of services. Draft letters of support or institutional commitment from university leaders and facilitate the letter approval process. Where internal or external professional services are needed (e.g. evaluator) identify provider and coordinate services. Provide template language on Brown services and facilities. Review drafts of proposals for responsiveness to sponsor requirements and goals.

Provide research leadership by supporting strategic projects for the Office of Research Strategy and Development

Design, develop and direct events at Brown to connect potential partners to research at Brown; strategically preparing teams in advance of and during proposal preparation. This includes outreach to federal agencies and national laboratories. While representing Brown, engage with federal agencies at workshops, open houses, and /or proposers’ days. Design and establish a database of strategic partnerships ranging from local to global partners, including local industries, national labs, non-profits, and federal agencies. Ensure funding and/or collaboration opportunities are brought to the attention of relevant faculty and department leadership.

Provide strategic intelligence on current best practices within research development, including team science, process optimization and other kinds of research development support.

Lead the submission of proposals for broad, university-wide proposals.

Oversee the proposal development process of institutional level proposals including proposal narrative development, editing, proofreading, integrating content from multiple authors, coordinating meetings with project team members, and evaluating complex funding solicitations to ensure compliance.  Coordinate and collaborate with grants and finance administrators within the department submitting the proposal and within relevant OVPR offices, particularly pre-award in the Office of Sponsored Projects.

Education
Required: 

• Graduate degree;  STEM field preferred and at least 5-7 years of related experience in a university or research institute or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience in leading large scale multi-institutional proposal development projects

Experience

• Demonstrated knowledge of or experience working with federal funding agencies is required; an understanding of the mission-driven federal agencies preferred
• Experienced in Team Science (collaboration management, facilitation, and transdisciplinary research development)
• Project management experience

About the Unit

The new Office of Regulatory Advising serves as a central resource for researchers proposing to conduct biomedical, social or behavioral research involving human subjects.  The Office of Regulatory Advising provides expertise to researchers on research protocol design with a focus on proactively supporting efficient and streamlined regulatory approvals and compliance.  The office carries a deep knowledge and familiarity with NIH, GCP, OHRP, FDA, and other applicable federal regulations for human subject participation in clinical, social, and behavioral research.

About the Position

The Director of Regulatory Advising is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing this new service at Brown University.

Working closely with researchers, the Regulatory Advisor assists in the preparation, completion and submission of protocols and other required documentation to the Institutional Review Board (IRB).  The position also assists clinical researchers in setting up regulatory binders as needed for clinical trials before the consent begins. The Director of Regulatory Advising translates regulatory requirements into specific streamlined research steps across many qualitative and quantitative research disciplines and comprehends and communicates ethical and compliance research standards related to clinical, social, and behavioral research.  The incumbent stays current on the ways that researchers in diverse disciplines work with and learn from research participants.

The Director will work across a number of different offices that support human subject research at Brown and affiliated hospital. The position will also be responsible for developing and reporting on the processes and metrics related to the faculty and research supported through this service. They will establish clear communications and tracking systems to ensure timely and complete support for researchers. They will track data on the impact of their work to clearly articulate university need and utilization of the services.

Responsibilities

Partner with faculty to prepare, submit, and track new IRB submissions to ensure smooth and easy review by the IRB [also to ensure protocol quality and ethical design].

• Work closely with researchers on new studies to ensure timely, accurate submission to the IRB;
• Help researcher build a fundamental understanding of the ethical and legal frameworks underlying human subjects research;
• Assist in the design, completion, and submission of required materials and documents;
• Advise on requirements related to investigational new drugs or devices as applicable;
• Collect and assist in developing all required documents for new submissions to the IRB;
• Complete new protocol IRB documentation on behalf of the researcher as applicable;
• Assure protocols have complete, consistent language throughout, including proper SAE reporting requirements, and any other study specific regulatory or sponsor requirements that apply;
• Track each protocol submitted through the IRB/subcommittee approval process, evaluate for recurrent problems, develop and implement systems to decrease delay in the approval process.

• Assist with the submission protocol and consent document modifications as needed after initial IRB approval.
• Work closely with researchers on modifications and renewals of studies to ensure timely, accurate submission to the IRB;
• Assist in the design, completion, and submission of required materials and documents;
• Advise on requirements related to investigational new drugs or devices as applicable;
• Collect and assists in developing all required documents for modifications and renewal submissions to the IRB;
• Complete modification and renewal study IRB documentation on behalf of the researcher as applicable;
• Assures protocols have complete, consistent language throughout, including proper SAE reporting requirements, and any other study specific regulatory or sponsor requirements that apply;
• Track each protocol modification or renewal submitted through the IRB/subcommittee approval process, evaluate for recurrent problems, develop and implement systems to decrease delay in the approval process.

Develop and report on processes and metrics related to the faculty and research supported through this service.

• Develop processes and resources to ensure that assistance provided to researchers is streamlined and efficient.
• Track support provided and maintain metrics related to work performed;
• Report on effectiveness of service.
• Assist the IRB and HRPP with training and outreach as needed.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree required
• Must have at least 7 years of total experience in academic or industry-based clinical, social, or behavioral research or research administration
• Must have some experience working in academia and with researchers in an academic setting;
• Must have familiarity with IRBs and IRB reviews;
• Demonstrated leadership skills;
• Experience with NIH, GCP, OHRP, FDA, and federal regulations for human subject participation in clinical, social, and behavioral research strongly preferred
• SOCRA CCRP certification preferred, but not required
• Supervisory Experience Preferred
• Research experience preferred
