Safety Promotion requires the targeted communication of risk management activities, risk controls, and best practices to ensure operational employees and decision-makers can manage risk in a dynamic, evolving environment. Safety Promotion also requires the development of training materials to transfer safety intelligence to the front-line operational employee. In an effective SMS, all employees understand their safety responsibilities and can articulate the way safety is managed in the agency.
The Safety Promotion Specialist is a recognized subject matter expert in designing and implementing safety awareness initiatives aim at reducing accidents and promoting safe practices. Possesses an understanding of aviation operations and safety initiatives throughout the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), oversight agencies and aviation stakeholders. Provides leadership for highly complex and challenging activities under the minimal direction of a manager or executive. May act as a principal specialist to develop new and innovative approaches, methodologies, and/or techniques or as a team leader to define and direct challenging projects/programs/activities. Shares responsibility for the performance of safety programs/projects that frequently affect more than one line of business (LOB), staff office (SO), or the FAA as a whole.
Applies experience and knowledge of safety communication and outreach methods for promoting safety awareness, both within an organization and to the public, which includes creating safety campaigns, developing educational materials, and conducting safety training sessions. Creates materials, brochures, posters, videos, and digital content to support safety initiatives, this includes editing safety promotion products which may include talking points, slide briefings, speeches, video scripts, emails, letters, reports, web content
design, newsletter articles, International Civil Aviation Organization Working Papers, and others as assigned.
Completes various tasks related to safety culture enhancement, including the development of training materials and educational materials for safety oversight employees so they can better understand their role in a strong safety culture. Conducts assessments and evaluations of existing safety programs to identify areas for improvement. Leads reviews of safety incidents and accidents to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions for promoting safety measures. Analyzes and compiles data on safety incidents and near misses to develop targeted prevention strategies. Documents findings and maintains detailed records of investigations and follow-up
actions to develop and recommend approaches to address current and anticipated problems and issues. Identifies opportunities for continuous improvement in safety processes and practices. Implements and monitors changes to ensure they result in enhanced safety outcomes.
Prepares regular reports on safety performance metrics and presents findings to senior management. Maintains comprehensive records of safety activities, training sessions, and incident reports. Shares safety data, disseminates best practices and lessons learned, and provides information on the FAA-industry Safety Team's efforts and activities, which supports safety initiatives led by AVP, AVS, and AOA/ADA leadership, and may be directed toward aviation stakeholder groups, Congressional staff, the public, and/or FAA employees.
Provides expert guidance and instruction both internally and externally to address diverse, complex issues which often cross multiple projects, programs, and/or functional areas. Develops and recommends approaches to address current and anticipated problems and issues. Works with senior management to identify and resolve problems.
Work activities typically impact directly on the objectives of one or more organizational units, major subdivisions, and/or LOB's/SO's and often impact on the objectives of the FAA.
