The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant on a 12-month contract at the Office of Education Research.
Project Title: EmoSense: An Artificial Intelligence-powered tool for swift and accurate recognition of student epistemic emotions during learning
Project Introduction: This project aims to develop EmoSense as a web-based prototypical tool that leverages Artificial Intelligence, including machine learning models, to enable swift and reasonably accurate recognition of students’ epistemic emotions. Existing mobile devices will be used to generate features of students’ emotions during learning that will be recognised for analysis. Students will interact with the web application to provide inputs and responses to align with exhibited emotions and for validation.
Requirements:
At least a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or related
fields. Applicants with Master’s Degree preferred and may be considered for a Research Associate position instead.
Experienced in web application development, machine learning models and techniques for facial recognition. Interests in education research or social sciences will be helpful for this position.

- Good self and time management skills in structuring tasks to achieve given goals and objectives
Responsibilities:
- Co-design experimental research and development tools that align with the project’s needs and requirements
- Research and develop appropriate models and analytics that are able to handle and analyse facial data for interpretation
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to understand analytic needs and devise possible solutions
- Able to communicate research findings and implications to various stakeholders (i.e., researchers, policymakers, educators)
- Assist in work-related duties including literature review, report and paper writing
- Other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator
