This is an exciting opportunity to work as a Research Fellow within the CHILDS programme, which is at the forefront of clinical-academic research for population health paediatrics. The Child Health Integrated Learning and Delivery System (CHILDS) team sits across Evelina London children’s hospital, the Department of Women and Children’s Health at King’s College London, and King’s Health Partners Women and Children’s Health clinical-academic group.

The team will apply learning from the Children and Young People’s Health Partnership programme to several new projects, linked to NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) South London and South East London Integrated Care System priorities for children and young people.

The team is clinical-academic, so this role will work across both sides, providing the main research link between teams. The post holder will have a key role in managing or conducting all aspects of the development and conduct of the population paediatrics projects, including evaluation design and conduct, data collection, data analysis, data visualisation, and the preparation of reports, papers and presentations.

We are looking for a mixed methods researcher with experience of working in a transdisciplinary team and on applied research projects. The post-holder will be the lead researcher on the population paediatrics team.

The post holder will lead the assessment of child health and health service needs, intervention design and service and research evaluations. They will need extensive experience of using routinely collected health service use data, from secondary and primary care sources, for observational and interventional research. They will be expected to undertake a wide range of research activities (including rapid evidence reviews, qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis) as well as drafting reports, peer-reviewed publications and assisting in developing research proposals.

The post holder will report to Dr Ingrid Wolfe, Professor of Paediatrics and Child Health at King’s College London, Consultant in Population Paediatrics at Evelina London.

The Imperial Memory Unit (IMU) has been running clinical trials for over ten years, focusing on disease modifying treatment trials in early Alzheimer’s disease but also including observations studies and trials of advanced diagnostics.

The Clinical Research Nurse post holder will be responsible for coordinating clinical trials relating to dementia and the post holder will be responsible for preparing/delivering clinical trial medication. The Alzheimer’s Clinical Trials medications at IMU are predominantly delivered by intravenous infusions; therefore, it is a requirement that the post holder is IV competent. The post holder will act as a blinded nurse and un-blinded nurse for specific studies taking place at the imperial memory research unit.

Other responsibilities will include helping in the recruitment of patients, coordination of patients participating in clinical research, collection of research data and carrying out clinical observations relevant to the study protocol. It is desirable that the post holder has experience in using clinical rating scales in Alzheimer’s disease (e.g. MMSE, CDR, ADAS-Cog) or are willing to be trained on neuropsychological assessments. They will also be expected to develop skills and knowledge relating to the conduct of clinical research.

The majority of time will be spent in a hospital research clinic setting. The post holder will facilitate high standards of nursing care and work closely with the other departments in the hospital such as pharmacy, Imaging and other research teams.
• Identifies potential patients for clinical research.
• Determines eligibility of potential patients.
• Ensures all pre-study tests are undertaken and results obtained.
• Acts as patients advocate in obtaining informed consent in the first instance and as the trial progresses/unfolds.
• Provides written and verbal information to patients and families on the concept of clinical research and detailed education regarding the objectives, scientific rationale, treatment, Investigations and follow-up for specific clinical research projects.
• Provides direct patient care within the expanded role of clinical trials (e.g. advanced history taking).
• Systematically documents patient information in the medical notes.

Your new role

This role will largely be focused on the learning and development of the trainees, graduates and interns in the company, monitoring their CPD compliance and journey to becoming qualified. There will also be aspects of talent acquisition, assisting with two recruitment cycles each year.

L&D:
- Coordinating internal training with external coaches through liaising with training providers

Work autonomously to manage and coordinate own study portfolio within the designated areas of responsibility, whilst working as part of a multidisciplinary team. Maintain effective communication with patients, carers and professionals to ensure service delivery. Be responsible for the whole patient recruitment process from selection to screening and from randomisation to the scheduling of study visits. Evaluate patient eligibility for the trial, co-ordinating pre-study tests, obtaining results and arranging appropriate appointments according to the research protocol. Ensure patients are fully informed prior to entry into the clinical research programme and play a key role in eliciting informed consent to participate. To provide ongoing advice and information to patients with regards to their participation in clinical research in order to facilitate effective informed consent. Act as a resource and support to patients and their relatives, explaining practical aspects of the trial, assisting and supporting local nursing teams when necessary. Implement and adhere to the principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and ensure that the trial is conducted according to the Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trial) Regulations 2004 and Amended Regulations 2006 where appropriate. This medical retina clinical and research fellowship in Moorfields offers a unique experience for aspiring medical retina specialists to obtain the experience and knowledge in managing complex medical retina, genetics and uveitis cases essential for taking up a future consultant post. It also offers the opportunity to participate and be an investigator in exciting clinical trials including multi-centre and multi-national studies.

In this post as a medical retina clinical and research fellow in Moorfields Eye Hospital, you will spend half your time in the medical retina, uveitis and genetics clinics managing complex cases under the guidance and tutelage of senior consultants and the other half within the R&D department working within the clinical research facility as an investigator in numerous clinical trials.

The applicant should have completed their ophthalmology training locally and is seeking fellowship training in medical retina.

Ability to manage common medical retina pathology with experience in retinal laser treatment and intravitreal injection is required.

Applicants are required to be registered with the General Medical Council and hold a License to Practice.
