The Opportunity:
The role of the Senior Research Scientist/Team Leader in Human-Robot Interaction is to lead a team of researchers and engineers to conduct innovative research leading to scientific achievements that are aligned with CSIRO’s strategies. The Senior Research Scientist/Team Leader may lead scientific activity ranging from fundamental research to the investigation of specific industry or community problems. The Senior Research Scientist/Team Leader will have the opportunity to build and maintain networks, play a lead role in securing project funds, provide scientific leadership, increase the reputation of the team and group internationally, and pursue new ideas and approaches that create new concepts.
The Robotics Design and Interaction group is looking for a senior research scientist with a strong track record of research leadership in human robot teaming. The successful candidate will have experience leading researchers and trainees with algorithm and interface development, human-robot experiments with real robot systems and a passion for working on real-world problems. They will fill a critical role in a multi-year project of national significance drawing upon broad capabilities from across CSIRO to deliver societal impact from our science, particularly in human-robot teaming and robotics in unstructured environments. The role will be highly rewarding, working with multi-disciplinary research scientists and engineers solving real-world problems. The candidate will have exposure and access to world leading field robotics research teams at CSIRO during the tenure, with opportunities for broadening their knowledge and skillset.
The researcher will have the ability and willingness to broaden their skillset to include the capability growth areas within Robotics and AI. The Robotics and Autonomous Systems group will be providing the candidate with close guidance and mentorship to encourage and facilitate this along with learning and growth opportunities through appropriate learning material, courses, seminars, workshops etc.
Your duties will include:
- Develop world-class research in the general area of human-robot interaction with an emphasis on human-robot teams.
- Validate proposed methods through user studies in hardware-based implementations, applied in representative test environments.
- Produce high quality scientific and/or engineering papers suitable for publication in high quality journals and for presentation at top ranked international conferences.
- Work effectively as an integral member or leader of a multi-disciplinary research team, to undertake independent scientific investigations and carry out/delegate associated tasks while working collaboratively and honestly with internal and external colleagues, clients and partners to develop and progress challenging but realistic research plans for a range of research projects.
- Lead research projects and assist with elements of larger projects including the negotiation of resource requirements.
- Lead, coach and supervise staff to ensure experiments are established in accordance with research design, within agreed timelines and budget.
- Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO’s scientific objectives.

To be considered you will need:
Essential:
Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.
- A doctorate in a relevant discipline area, Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Math, Robotics, or equivalent experience
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, evidenced by high-level reporting, presentation and negotiation abilities, and the capacity to identify and influence critical stakeholders to gain support for contentious proposals/ideas.
- A track record of high-quality peer-reviewed publications as primary or senior author in high impact journals and/or top-tier international conferences.
- Significant experience in programming robots using C++ or Python.
- Demonstrated knowledge of human-robot interaction with an emphasis on human-robot teams, human-machine interfaces, human factors and human modelling.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member or leader of a multi-disciplinary research team, and carry out independent individual research, to achieve organisational goals.
- Demonstrated ability to undertake original, creative and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems.
