About the Role:
This is a key role within the Convatec Technology & Innovation (T&I) team, a group that spends $100M+ annually to discover, design, build, and launch the products that will enable the company’s future success. As the R&D Portfolio Strategy Manager, you will play a key role in helping to set the strategic direction for the Convatec innovation and new product development portfolio. You will be a trusted partner across the T&I organization to help Convatec understand where to place strategic bets on new products to drive sustainable business results.
This role will report to the Director of R&D Portfolio Strategy and will work very closely with a wide range of internal stakeholders.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Set the direction for the Convatec T&I Portfolio
- Work with the Director of R&D Portfolio Strategy, CTO, and T&I Leadership Team to help set the investment priorities for the development of new products
- Suport the strategy development and prioritization of the entire Convatec portfolio of R&D, medical/clinical, and regulatory work through the development and use of various tools and KPIs
- Conduct analyses that will help the T&I team understand the value of the Convatec innovation portfolio and make key prioritization decisions
- Evaluate project investment scenarios, identify issues, develop hypotheses and communicate insights and recommendations to key decision-makers
- Support the Convatec Technology & Innovation (T&I) strategy plan
- Coordinate and drive the innovation portfolio planning process with the help of the Director of R&D Portfolio Strategy as well as a wide range of internal stakeholders
- Conduct research and analyses on a wide variety of internal and external-facing topics and make recommendations to help Convatec focus on the resources on the most valuable activities
Engage the T&I team to advance our strategy
- Work with team members across T&I and other functions to help drive the implementation of strategic initiatives and report out on progress to leadership
- Help R&D project teams develop and review project business cases that will yield optimal return for Convatec. Review business cases with T&I leadership team and executive team to validate project viability and prioritization
- Work with Finance to ensure that our overall portfolio strategy is consistent with available resources and support the creation of investment scenario analyses
- Proactively engage innovation project teams to understand progress and update portfolio planning analytics as needed
- Facilitate discussions between the T&I team and business unit finance business partners to ensure that our innovation portfolio will meet business unit financial ambitions
Engage executive leadership
- Work with T&I leadership to develop report-out materials for periodic review by executive leadership, including CEO, CFO
- Support the production of communication materials for the Board of Directors
- React to executive-level feedback with timely and thoughtful analyses and recommendations
Serve as a leader within Convatec
- Build relationships with the T&I stakeholders in many functions, including R&D, medical/clinical, and regulatory, as well as with other stakeholders across Convatec, including Marketing, Finance, and Corporate Development / Corporate Strategy, to understand the key portfolio needs for Convatec, drivers of success, and risks to our new product development plans
- Help drive principles of analysis-based portfolio planning across the broad Convatec T&I community
About You:
Skills & Experience:
- Strategic, analytical, and critical thinking abilities
- Ability to conduct research and analyses, understand interactions between multiple factors, develop recommendations, and communicate insights to stakeholders
- Competency in developing executive communication materials, e.g., PowerPoint, white papers
- Ability to work and communicate with a wide range of functional stakeholders
- Ability to see the “big picture”, with attention to detail where necessary
- Financial modeling capabilities, including DCF modeling, NPV/IRR analysis, and scenario modeling
- Industry experience in Medtech, Pharma, or other Life Sciences is a plus
Education/Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree, preferably in engineering, math, or science discipline
- Minimum of 5+ years' total experience with experience in corporate strategy and/or project-based finance
- Strategy consulting background (3+ years)
Working Conditions:
- Hybrid schedule
- Location: within a commutable distance to Lexington, MA / greater Boston area
- Position may require travel up to 15% within Europe or U.S.
