About the Role:

This is a key role within the Convatec Technology & Innovation (T&I) team, a group that spends $100M+ annually to discover, design, build, and launch the products that will enable the company’s future success. As the R&D Portfolio Strategy Manager, you will play a key role in helping to set the strategic direction for the Convatec innovation and new product development portfolio. You will be a trusted partner across the T&I organization to help Convatec understand where to place strategic bets on new products to drive sustainable business results.

This role will report to the Director of R&D Portfolio Strategy and will work very closely with a wide range of internal stakeholders.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Set the direction for the Convatec T&I Portfolio

• Work with the Director of R&D Portfolio Strategy, CTO, and T&I Leadership Team to help set the investment priorities for the development of new products
• Suport the strategy development and prioritization of the entire Convatec portfolio of R&D, medical/clinical, and regulatory work through the development and use of various tools and KPIs
• Conduct analyses that will help the T&I team understand the value of the Convatec innovation portfolio and make key prioritization decisions
• Evaluate project investment scenarios, identify issues, develop hypotheses and communicate insights and recommendations to key decision-makers
• Support the Convatec Technology & Innovation (T&I) strategy plan
• Coordinate and drive the innovation portfolio planning process with the help of the Director of R&D Portfolio Strategy as well as a wide range of internal stakeholders
• Conduct research and analyses on a wide variety of internal and external-facing topics and make recommendations to help Convatec focus on the resources on the most valuable activities

Engage the T&I team to advance our strategy

• Work with team members across T&I and other functions to help drive the implementation of strategic initiatives and report out on progress to leadership
• Help R&D project teams develop and review project business cases that will yield optimal return for Convatec. Review business cases with T&I leadership team and executive team to validate project viability and prioritization
• Work with Finance to ensure that our overall portfolio strategy is consistent with available resources and support the creation of investment scenario analyses
• Proactively engage innovation project teams to understand progress and update portfolio planning analytics as needed
• Facilitate discussions between the T&I team and business unit finance business partners to ensure that our innovation portfolio will meet business unit financial ambitions

Engage executive leadership

• Work with T&I leadership to develop report-out materials for periodic review by executive leadership, including CEO, CFO
• Support the production of communication materials for the Board of Directors
• React to executive-level feedback with timely and thoughtful analyses and recommendations

Serve as a leader within Convatec

• Build relationships with the T&I stakeholders in many functions, including R&D, medical/clinical, and regulatory, as well as with other stakeholders across Convatec, including Marketing, Finance, and Corporate Development / Corporate Strategy, to understand the key portfolio needs for Convatec, drivers of success, and risks to our new product development plans
• Help drive principles of analysis-based portfolio planning across the broad Convatec T&I community

About You:

Skills & Experience:

• Strategic, analytical, and critical thinking abilities
• Ability to conduct research and analyses, understand interactions between multiple factors, develop recommendations, and communicate insights to stakeholders
• Competency in developing executive communication materials, e.g., PowerPoint, white papers
• Ability to work and communicate with a wide range of functional stakeholders
• Ability to see the “big picture”, with attention to detail where necessary
• Financial modeling capabilities, including DCF modeling, NPV/IRR analysis, and scenario modeling
• Industry experience in Medtech, Pharma, or other Life Sciences is a plus

Education/Qualifications:

• Undergraduate degree, preferably in engineering, math, or science discipline
• Minimum of 5+ years' total experience with experience in corporate strategy and/or project-based finance
• Strategy consulting background (3+ years)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The position will also include project management of studies within General Internal Medicine and Population Health. The position entails handling the day-to-day administrative and management issues related to ongoing research studies in coordination with the Principal Investigator/leadership team, including supervision of project staff; project fiscal management; coordinating with project collaborators; overseeing accurate project implementation; ensuring compliance with all reporting requirements; development of study protocols and operating procedures; managing research databases; serving as a study liaison with the IRB; and assistance with grant applications.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Project Manager (PM) is responsible for leading research projects to satisfy a defined goals or scientific objective. Research projects will include small-to-large funded and unfunded studies in the Division of General Internal Medicine and evaluations of programs within Population Health Services. Duties include the following:

Staff Management

• Responsible for effective personnel management including training, directing, mentoring and instilling a commitment to quality and excellence.  Coordinates resources and work load to achieve objectives and strategies.
• Maintains effective/appropriate staffing by monitoring employee turnover, overtime, and absenteeism. Coordinates and maintains the monthly schedule for project coverage.  
• Monitors productivity/performance to identify and evaluate strengths and training opportunities; Conducts employee performance evaluations and disciplines when appropriate to include termination, with appropriate supportive documentation.
• Works with Human Resources and department managers on the selection of qualified employees for employment following all policies, guidelines, and applicable laws.
• Encourages staff and personally advances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs and workshops and maintaining knowledge of industry standards and practices.

Operations Management

• Interacts with sponsors, including internal and external funders.
• Coordinates efforts of faculty, collaborators, analysts, and staff.
• Ensures study implementation, operations, goals and IRB regulations are being followed accurately and within IRB and study guidelines.
• Oversee data collection procedures and review instruments to ensure quality control. Acquires and maintains knowledge of systems and databases

Finance Administration

• Create annual operating project budgets, monitor actual results in accordance with budget and funding source regulations (Federal, State, Grantors.).  Forecast fiscal operational needs.
• Monitor all grant expenditures and disbursements for adherence to budget guidelines and award notices.
• Participates in grant renewal processes. Prepare, administer and ensure timely grant submissions.  Assist investigators in developing and preparing grant proposals, including drafting, editing, and preparing back-up data documentation for the submission.
• Oversees all aspects of general accounting, accounts payable, miscellaneous billing and receivables, account reconciliations, payroll coordination with BMC, grant funding, etc.

Project Management

• Coordinates/facilitates the research project management life cycle, including initiation, development, and implementation of various projects.
• Coordinates research teams, and manages research project timelines, to ensure research milestones are completed within the specified and in line with annual objectives.
• Interfaces with IRB and drafts IRB protocols, amendments, continuing reviews, etc. Prepare substantive aspects of research grant proposals and IRB applications, especially literature and database searches, and assist with conducting analyses for various other projects.
• Meets regularly with PIs, research staff, study teams, and Population Health Services teams to collect and communicate business and research requirements, and set expectations for research-related work.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for overseeing two or more domestic and/or international research projects under the direction of senior managers/directors and Principal Investigators. The Research Project Manager will be responsible for the management of all aspects of one or more NIH-funded studies that will be implemented within Boston Medical Center’s (BMC), Office Based Addiction Treatment (OBAT) Program, the largest addiction treatment program of its kind in New England. The Research Project Manager will oversee and participate in implementing a hybrid effectiveness implementation trial to compare office-based methadone (novel in this setting) and office-based buprenorphine (treatment as usual) within BMC’s OBAT Clinic. BMC is one of five sites involved in this research as part of NIDA’s Clinical Trials Network. The Research Project Manager will also support the closedown and analysis phase of the HEALing Communities Study, a large-scale, multi-site trial with the goal of reducing opioid overdose deaths. The Research Project Manager responsibilities will include working with the study team to develop study protocols, assessment instruments, and Institutional Review Board protocols; coordinating with multiple study partners (e.g., lead team for methadone trial, HEAL stakeholders); leading team meetings, and participating in national meetings as BMC representative; monitoring study implementation; ensuring study recruitment goals are met; conducting recruitment, screening, informed consent and research assessments with study participants; working with OBAT clinical team to meet study goals while ensuring minimal disruption to clinical care; tracking study retention and ensuring minimal loss to follow up; performing quality assurance checks; assisting with manuscripts and presentations; ensuring compliance with reporting to NIH; and coordinating new grant applications. The Project Manager will monitor budgets and spending and coordinate contracts with independent consults and subcontractors. • Coordinates research teams, and manages research project timelines, to ensure research trials or milestones are completed within the specified and in line with annual objectives.
• Meets regularly with stakeholders, including research staff, clients and study teams, to collect and communicate business and research requirements, and set expectations for research-related work.
• Responsible for the completion of both research and project management deliverables, including project plans and research schedules, competitive intelligence reports, progress reports and investigational applications.
• Participate in and oversee dissemination of study findings to local and national audiences.

Research Management

• Works with Director of Research and Principal Investigators to select the most appropriate methodology and techniques for facilitating the research.
• Responsible for producing qualitative and quantitative research plans, designing research questionnaires and moderator guides.
• Works with research teams (on site and/or off-site), and the project and research directors, to coordinate fieldwork initiatives, and conduct pre-research and post-research analyses and evaluations.
• Works with research team to facilitate & ensure protocol adherence, quality assurance and HIPAA compliance.
• Collects data, summarizes and interprets research data.
• Collaborates with Director of Research and Principal Investigators to author journal articles and to present findings at research seminars, study groups and conferences.

Staff Management

• Supervise support staff (e.g., Research Assistants), including training, delegating tasks, overseeing daily activities, mentoring, guiding through demonstration of best practices and offering opportunities for professional development.
• Prepares performance evaluations, submits timesheets; responsible for hiring, disciplining and processing terminations in accordance with established polices.
• Schedules and facilitates staff meetings. Plans agenda and ensures that minutes are taken, edited and distributed.

Administrative Duties

• Manages purchasing, invoices and accounts payable for the department.  Assists with monitoring expenses, facilitating contracts, ordering materials and documenting all approved variances.
• Liaisons with Institutional Review Board (IRB) for submissions, correspondence, and regulatory binders, including administrative amendments.
• Assists with development and writing of proposals to obtain funding for ongoing and future research activities.
• Perform administrative duties associated with the study’s Data Monitoring and Safety Board, tracking and reporting adverse events and collecting data specified by the DMSB. Responsible for all other administrative duties related to research activities.

Other duties

• Complete all training required by BMC IRB, central IRBs, NIH, and NIDA Clinical Trials Network
• Conduct recruitment, screening, enrollment, informed consent, research assessments, follow up and tracking for study participants (responsible for managing own participant case load)
• Coordinate with clinicians and program leaders across BMC programs to ensure recruitment goals are met
• Program research tools using software (e.g., REDCap) to program required assessments and tools
• Performs other duties as required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

• Master’s degree in related field (may consider candidates with Bachelor’s degree who have at least 6 years directly related research and/or clinical experience).

EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum of three years’ experience in research public health, health care administration and/or related field, including experience managing projects and operations.    
• 1 year of supervisory experience
• Experience working directly with diverse, underserved, and vulnerable populations
• Clinical trial experience strongly preferred
• Experience with Institutional Review Boards and human subjects research ethical standards strongly preferred
• Experience with or strong interest in addiction medicine

About the Opportunity

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Northeastern University Research Enterprise Services (NU-RES) Director of Research Operations and Systems and with support of senior level NU-RES team members, the Data Quality and Research Administration Analytics Manager (“Data Manager”) is responsible for developing and executing local data governance strategies, managing data quality, building and driving digital initiatives that support the research enterprise, and improving the analytical value of data related to the university’s research enterprise.  They will focus on client engagement and internal operational efficiencies to implement data governance policies, procedures, processes, and standards and work with a variety of university partners to identify opportunities to improve data quality across the university’s global research network. 

The Data Manager is responsible for information system management and best practice standards to improve data quality across NU-RES applications (e.g., eCD eCLAWs ePAWs), which includes analyzing data collection workstreams, creating processes and procedures, recommending new policies, and monitoring the collection and storage of NU-RES data; they will work closely with the NU-RES Director of Research Operations and Systems and eRA Systems Manager on implementing NU-RES’s digital strategy through evaluation of enterprise data standards, technology, and processes.

The Data Manager is responsible for educating and training end-users on sound data quality standards and internal control practices, fostering a culture of quality client service; assessing and interpreting data in support of operational excellence and data-driven decision making by senior leadership.

The Data Manager will evaluate how digital governance of research data impacts data quality and will work to maximize the value of analytics and innovation to transform the university’s data reporting capabilities, while encouraging the adoption of contemporary methods, practices, and measurement outcomes, producing consistent and accurate information.

30% - Reporting Analytics: Collaborate with Senior Data Analyst to identify appropriate categories of data, summarize and analyze in custom ad hoc reports.  Through Critical Thinking, analyze the data usage by performing assessments on data end-to-end. Define and design the data quality rules by understanding the needs and demands from user community.

15% - Digital Governance, Improvement and Training: Troubleshoot discrepancies and delegate to the appropriate personnel for correction. Consult with functional and technical staff and data stewards about meaning, use, reliability, and maintenance of data elements. Contribute to continuous process improvement in report analysis and trending methods. Manage and maintains all data governance and data quality related documentation. Establish the effective data quality rules by ensuring data validity, conformity, completeness, and timeliness.

15% - Project Management: Oversee the completion of tasks or projects. Define business rules for measuring data quality and profiling new data sources. Work with data engineers to enhance and refine data quality metrics.  Use effective communication to convey messages, explain processes, and answer questions.
