The Imperial Memory Unit (IMU) has been running clinical trials for over ten years, focusing on disease modifying treatment trials in early Alzheimer’s disease but also including observations studies and trials of advanced diagnostics.

The Clinical Research Nurse post holder will be responsible for coordinating clinical trials relating to dementia and the post holder will be responsible for preparing/delivering clinical trial medication. The Alzheimer’s Clinical Trials medications at IMU are predominantly delivered by intravenous infusions; therefore, it is a requirement that the post holder is IV competent. The post holder will act as a blinded nurse and un-blinded nurse for specific studies taking place at the imperial memory research unit.

Other responsibilities will include helping in the recruitment of patients, coordination of patients participating in clinical research, collection of research data and carrying out clinical observations relevant to the study protocol. It is desirable that the post holder has experience in using clinical rating scales in Alzheimer’s disease (e.g. MMSE, CDR, ADAS-Cog) or are willing to be trained on neuropsychological assessments. They will also be expected to develop skills and knowledge relating to the conduct of clinical research.

The majority of time will be spent in a hospital research clinic setting. The post holder will facilitate high standards of nursing care and work closely with the other departments in the hospital such as pharmacy, Imaging and other research teams.
• Identifies potential patients for clinical research.
• Determines eligibility of potential patients.
• Ensures all pre-study tests are undertaken and results obtained.
• Acts as patients advocate in obtaining informed consent in the first instance and as the trial progresses/unfolds.
• Provides written and verbal information to patients and families on the concept of clinical research and detailed education regarding the objectives, scientific rationale, treatment, Investigations and follow-up for specific clinical research projects.
• Provides direct patient care within the expanded role of clinical trials (e.g. advanced history taking).
• Systematically documents patient information in the medical notes.

Joining a small accountancy firm looking to grow its HR team of 5 with an early careers focused professional.

Your new role

This role will largely be focused on the learning and development of the trainees, graduates and interns in the company, monitoring their CPD compliance and journey to becoming qualified. There will also be aspects of talent acquisition, assisting with two recruitment cycles each year.

L&D:
- Coordinating internal training with external coaches through liaising with training providers
- Maintaining software systems (internal resource management, training calendar, intranet) to make sure they are up to date with the correct information
- Monitoring CPD compliance - trainees and qualified staff, ensuring training is completed by deadlines
- Maintaining training records for both trainees and qualified professionals
- Monitoring exams and results, partnering with line managers to advise on team members development
- Being a point of contact for 85 trainees across the business, escalating any assessment or performance issues to Senior Advisor
- Manage internal training programmes, conducting initial research for new content, providing support and feedback to the HR team
- Supporting on Ad-Hoc projects when necessary

This role will require 4 days a week in the office, with 1 working from home.

Work autonomously to manage and coordinate own study portfolio within the designated areas of responsibility, whilst working as part of a multidisciplinary team. Maintain effective communication with patients, carers and professionals to ensure service delivery. Be responsible for the whole patient recruitment process from selection to screening and from randomisation to the scheduling of study visits. Evaluate patient eligibility for the trial, co-ordinating pre-study tests, obtaining results and arranging appropriate appointments according to the research protocol. Ensure patients are fully informed prior to entry into the clinical research programme and play a key role in eliciting informed consent to participate. To provide ongoing advice and information to patients with regards to their participation in clinical research in order to facilitate effective informed consent. Act as a resource and support to patients and their relatives, explaining practical aspects of the trial, assisting and supporting local nursing teams when necessary. Implement and adhere to the principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and ensure that the trial is conducted according to the Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trial) Regulations 2004 and Amended Regulations 2006 where appropriate. Coordinate the collection of any biological samples required as part of the clinical trial and ensure safe and appropriate storage of specimens. Monitoring and recording daily freezer and fridge temperatures and reporting any temperature excursions to the Clinical Research Nurse/Manager. Ensure the safe administration of the investigational medicinal product (IMP), have in-depth knowledge of the legal requirements of the individual Trusts clinical trial pharmacovigilance and pharmacovigilance policies. Report any adverse events and reactions in accordance with this policy and the trial protocol. Report any serious adverse events within 24 hours of knowledge of the event, to the sponsors. (For non-commercial studies please use the appropriate SAE forms supplied by the host sites. For KCH & GSTT-sponsored non-commercial studies, please use KHPCTO forms). Maintain clear and accurate source data and other records; ensure a high level of accuracy when transcribing data onto electronic or paper case report forms; create and design database as required for patient and staff records. Assist the PIs in liaising with the KHPCTO and R&I Office relating to submission of the study for regulatory approval and Trust Management approval. Assist in completing submissions to the Research Health Authority (RHA) as required. Perform tasks requiring highly developed clinical skills including phlebotomy, cannulation and keep up to date with current practices for cannulation, phlebotomy, etc. To oversee the routine maintenance and servicing of research equipment. To ensure that all research equipment is calibrated annually and that the calibration certificates are filed in the Equipment File. Ensure that the freezers are maintained in good conditions. Perform essential tasks to prevent build-up of ice around the frame of the freezer doors. Liaise with the Research Nurses regarding administration of trial drugs to your study patients. Be responsible for the accountability of the oral medication used by your study patients.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn about research governance, ethics, study management and study delivery with an introduction to research finance. All relevant and mandatory research training will be provided. The successful candidate will be part of a team that manages a portfolio of challenging and interesting clinical trials in various disorders in Paediatric research. The successful candidate will experience tasks such as patient recruitment, study assessments, blood collection and processing, data entry and data management alongside administrative tasks as needed for the clinical trials activities within RDU 9. The post is focused on providing the successful candidate with experience in commercial and non-commercial clinical trials by carrying out research activities, aimed at improving the care and treatment of the paediatric patients.
