The Alaska Region Fisheries Branch of the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service will be hiring numerous temporary/seasonal Biological Science Technicians for the field season to work on a variety of fisheries-related studies. Duty stations are located in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Soldotna.

Projects involve monitoring salmon runs using fish weirs, digital video equipment, and sonar, conducting abundance estimates of resident fish species, documenting fish movement using radio telemetry, sampling water quality, and performing fish habitat inventories. Technicians will perform fieldwork at various locations throughout the state, including remote areas in the Alaskan bush. Travel to field camps is primarily by small aircraft or boat. Please note that these positions are for the adventurous as harsh weather, an abundance of biting insects, and remote living conditions can be challenging. However, this rare opportunity to work with intact assemblages of native fish species, while surrounded by abundant wildlife and pristine wilderness, will more than compensate the tolerant individual.

• Assists the study or project leader in planning the course of the project by contributing ideas; researching methods, costs and needs related to personnel, and equipment; assembling equipment; and establishing practical procedures for accomplishing the work.
• Participates in fieldwork. This includes independent gathering and documentation of a variety of data and may include training and oversight of lower graded technicians. Work may also include making on-site decisions to adjust location and configuration: setting up and dismantling fish weirs and associated video equipment, and over seeing their operation; setting up, overseeing the operation of, and dismantling sonar equipment; locating, capturing, censusing, marking, and tagging fish; data collection and recording; and related work.
• Leads a small group of lower graded technicians in gathering field data. Provides training in techniques and procedures, plans work, and provides input to supervisor concerning performance of lower graded technicians.
• Organizes and performs preliminary analysis of field data. Work may involve automated databases and/or geographic information systems.
• Makes preliminary determinations of the cause of problems noted, e.g., drought, overpopulation, or toxin.

As a GS-05 Biological Science Technician (Plants), you will work under the direct supervision of experienced staff at all times as a crew member for the vegetation monitoring program. To perform duties effectively, you will need a foundation in botanical sciences. Attention to details is important. Duties typically include:

• Assisting with collection of vegetation and environmental data in permanent plots in a variety of settings.
• Taking detailed data on vegetation communities and assist with data entry using multiple software platforms.

To perform duties effectively, you will need a strong foundation in the botanical sciences and be able recognize plant species to the species level in the field including some mosses and lichens. • Making voucher collections and taking detailed data on vegetation communities and assisting with data entry using multiple software platforms.
• Working with less experienced staff to collect tree cores from the permanent plots.

To perform duties effectively, you will need to be an experienced field botanist, with the ability to recognize most plant species to species-level in the field including many moss and lichen species. MAJOR DUTIES:

At the GS-5, GS-6 and GS-7 levels you will:
Install, operate, and maintain resource management equipment (e.g., tools, traps, and sampling, monitoring, photographic, and laboratory equipment), inventory equipment, evaluate quality assurance compliance, and calibrate equipment as necessary to assist biologists in executing and reporting of fishery activities.

Collect and report fishery data using standardized data collection procedures and equipment, utilizing a variety of computer programs to compile and report data and other resource management information, including research and long-term monitoring projects.

Provide information to other employees and visitors about the natural resource management program.

In addition to the above duties at the GS-6 and GS-7 level you will also: analyze fishery data and test conditions; may develop and present related interpretive programs to the public; provide advice, assistance and training to students, and volunteers; and prepare diagrams, charts and graphs.

In addition to the above duties at the GS-7 level you will also: prepare reports and act as a crew leader on a variety of fisheries projects.

Additional Position Information:

In addition to working in an office/field setting, this job could involve hiking with up to 50 lbs. for up to 15 miles per day over rough terrain; lifting heavy weights (up to 50 lbs); working in inclement (hot, cold, snow, wind, rain) weather conditions. Field work includes exposure to biting insects and potentially dangerous animals.

Duties for the position with Denali National Park and Preserve include but are not limited to the following:

Assists with the collection and compilation of data necessary for implementing the adaptive management component of the 2012 Denali Park Road Vehicle Management Plan (VMP). Duties include:

• Collect data using hand-held Juno GPS units while traveling in a concessioner-operated buses or a government vehicle transiting all or part of the 92-mile Denali Park Road.
• Collect data on wildlife sightings using binoculars and a range finder.
• Collect data on VMP indicators (number and type of vehicles at a wildlife stop and rest stops, amount of time hikers have been waiting to be picked up by a bus).
• Collect vehicle traffic data from monitoring locations.
• Install and maintain traffic counters, download and process data using specialized software.
• Download and process data using MS Excel, MS Access, and ArcMap.
• Perform quality control/quality assurance and follow established protocols.

A uniform will not be required while traveling on buses but will be required when traveling in a government vehicle. Duties for the position with Lake Clark National Park and Preserve include but are not limited to the following:

• Use fish capture techniques such as seines, hoop nets, and/or gill nets.

Work includes, but is not limited to the following:
Assists professional staff in implementing wildlife inventory and monitoring programs for a variety of possible species including seabirds, water birds, passerine birds, amphibians, small mammals, ungulates, bears, raptors, etc. in the front country and the remote backcountry areas of Alaskan National Parks. (For bird positions, must identify all birds in the study areas by sight and sound (calls and songs)). Assists in planning, logistical arrangements, field work, data entry and result summarization. Selectee(s) will typically be stationed in the front country, but may be expected to live in primitive, remote backcountry camps in remote portions of the park for up to two weeks at a time, collecting natural resource data. Work includes field surveys to document and assess animal presence, abundance, reproduction, management issues, and population dynamics in various areas of the park using established protocols and standard equipment (including GPS).

Selectee(s) will be required to: 1) safely hike long distances through mountainous terrain (on and off trail) in adverse weather conditions with a heavy backpack; 2) work and communicate closely with team members on extended field trips; and 3) navigate to plots off trail over rugged terrain, snowfields, dense vegetation, and streams. Work may be performed in areas frequented by bears (training on how to handle bear encounters will be given). Incumbents will use computer software applications (e.g., Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, ArcGIS, Pathfinder Office, etc.) to store, retrieve, manage and analyze data, generate maps, and assist with creating reports and recommendations for natural resources projects.

Additional clarification/duties for the GS-06 and GS-07 levels:

• Assists in analysis of data and completing reports or other documents related to the project.
• GPS mapping, GIS data management, map production, managing and manipulating digital images and web or journal-based research.

This is primarily an office-based position to assist professional staff with data management for a humpback whale research and monitoring program in a remote backcountry setting. Keeping up with incoming data during a busy field season will require that you: 1) download, label and manage photographs and observation data daily, 2) use fluke identification photographs to identify individual whales, and 3) assist once per week on whale surveys which involve long hours out on the water in a small boat in rain, sun, cold, and wind. During weekly fieldwork you will 1) assist with documenting whale observations under standardized protocols and 2) assist with driving the research vessel after initial training.
