The Role
Moderna continues to leverage its novel mRNA platform to expand the R&D portfolio and open new therapeutic applications for mRNA across diseases and therapeutic areas. R&D Strategy plays a crucial role for Moderna to achieve its mission to deliver the greatest possible impact to people through mRNA medicines by supporting critical research and development decisions.
The R&D Strategy team operates across research and development to provide analysis and guidance from discovery through development. The team executes a portfolio of strategy projects comprised of:
Discovery strategy to provide a scientific and business assessment of discovery concepts and novel applications of mRNA
Program strategy to drive research, preclinical and clinical development decision-making for specific programs
Portfolio strategy to set R&D priorities and objectives
The Senior Director, R&D Strategy will be responsible for a collection of strategy projects focused around one or more key pillars of R&D and enterprise strategy (e.g., respiratory vaccines, cancer vaccines, rare metabolic therapies, next generation pipeline and platform). This person will act as a critical integrator across the R&D portfolio to identify and drive towards R&D value catalysts through prioritization and sequencing of programs and resources.
Here’s What You’ll Do
Generate, prioritize and advance an agenda of discovery, program and portfolio strategy projects: deliver and action the most complex and cross-functional R&D questions
Discovery Strategy: In partnership with research leadership, identify novel mRNA applications and modalities through integrated assessment of biological, clinical and market factors
Program Strategy: In collaboration with program leadership, drive integrated discovery, preclinical, early-development and development strategy. Influence program strategy to align with the integrated R&D Strategy; identify and advance portfolio value catalysts
Portfolio Strategy: Integrate portfolio and program perspectives into enterprise strategy, contributing to long-range planning, objective setting, and portfolio prioritization
Be a trusted advisor and thought partner for Program Leadership and the R&D Leadership Team
Maintain an enterprise view across research, development, manufacturing and commercial
Additional duties as may be assigned from time to time
Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications)
12+ years of experience working for a clinical- or commercial-stage pharmaceutical/biotech company in strategy or corporate development, or similar experience in a professional services or investment capacity (e.g., management or strategy consulting, investment banking, or venture capital)
PhD, MD, or PharmD preferred, with an understanding of drug development and value creation in the biopharmaceutical industry, and commitment to learn about the science behind our platform technology
