Job Description

The Senior Engineer manages work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Employees in the Senior Engineer position are fully competent in the use of concepts and procedures. The Senior Engineer identifies problems, develops solutions, and takes action to resolve.

The Lead Engineer is at the specialist level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve complex problems, manage work, and provide leadership to others in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work. The Lead Engineer serves in lead roles providing guidance to others. They are also expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently.

Responsibilities

• Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.
• Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
• Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
• Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
• Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
• Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.  Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.  Maintains accurate records and files.
• Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
• Install Power Quality Monitors safely at the Utility level and occasionally at the customer if needed.
• Provide Technical Support to internal Distribution and transmission organization on potential solutions for Power Quality issues.
• Provide engineering recommendation to industrial, commercial, and residential customers.
• Formulate solutions to both Duke Energy and its customers based on data evaluations and information gathered. 
• Ability to collaborate and communicate with local field personnel.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Note: This posting is for one position. Dependent on relevant experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

Senior Engineer

• Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
• Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience

Lead Engineer

• Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
• Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience
• Registration as a Professional Engineer may be required by some departments. (e.g. Transmission, Distribution, Gas Engg, RRE).

Additional Preferred Qualifications

• Proficient in engineering theories and principle
• Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
• Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficient in principles of project management
• Registered Professional Engineer (PE)
• Experience in the utility industry
• Certified to hook up instruments to live power equipment.
• Experience with troubleshooting VFD’s (Variable Frequency drives), Motor soft starts, PLC’s and various industrial equipment

Working Conditions

• Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.

Assist with the oversight of the compliance function and compliance monitoring. Develop and maintain procedures which ensure regulatory, legal and policy compliance in accordance with applicable NAIC and state statutes, regulations, and guidance.

Key Accountabilities:

• Assist in identifying and containing compliance risk, monitoring, and fostering a compliance culture.

• Work to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations; develop, maintain, and distribute supporting policies, procedures, agreements, and contracts.

• Assistance/coordination of all types of examinations and audits.

• Serve as liaison to business development management, underwriters, and brokers, foster good working relationships with internal audit and regulatory agencies affecting assigned business(es).

• Monitor regulatory changes that impact existing insurance programs and assist with required changes.

• Develop external contacts among industry peer groups to determine/validate that the Company is following industry best practice.

• Assist with testing & monitoring of key regulations, issues reporting and escalation, and corrective actions.

• Prepare compliance data analytics and reports.

• Responsible for coaching, developing, and motivating direct reports.

• Responsible for complex regulatory research, data calls and filings.

• In addition to the above key responsibilities, may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as the Company may reasonably require.

Experience:

• 10 years proven insurance operations, compliance and/or legal management experience or equivalent.

• Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or related field

• Strong knowledge of assigned businesses, products, operations, systems and organization and full understanding of all significant regulatory compliance requirements applicable to the business.
