NHS England – South East Region Medical Directorate wishes to appoint a Professional Standards Manager. The post holder will work as part of a dynamic team in delivering an effective service supporting team members, managers and staff across the Performance, Appraisal and Revalidation Sector.
The post holder will:
• Support the processing and delivery of GP revalidation recommendations and annual appraisal for doctors connected to NHS England – South East.
• Support the team in maintaining NHS England’s Responsible Officer (RO) connections and the Revalidation Management System for circa 9000 General Practitioners.
• Manage individual cases arising from appraisals and non-engaged practitioners.
• Manage difficult conversations with General Practitioners, providing support and advice about their appraisal and revalidation.
• Refer practitioners to NHS England’s Clinical Advisors for retention, ‘defined’ scope and well-being conversations.
• Work with our key stakeholders, GP appraisers, Senior Appraisers, the GMC and other colleagues to help resolve queries and share best practice.
• Have oversight to the processing of appraiser pension payments and the production of SOLO forms and Locum A forms.
• Work with the team to maintain the Professional Standards workspace on the FutureNHS Hub
Please note, management of individuals within the team may also be required.
There are three bases within the South East and working arrangements will be agreed on an individual basis.
• Support the team to ensure that the portfolio of tasks/projects are planned, managed and delivered effectively.
• Ensure the management of specific tasks, reporting and analysing data across a range of functions and projects.
• Be a key member of the team as well as supporting effective communication and stakeholder management, both internally and externally.
• Have a good understanding of the principles of information governance and confidentiality.
The postholder will be required to work effectively as part of the Responsible Officers’ team and autonomously.
The key requirements for the role are:
• Experience of processing General Practitioner revalidation recommendations.
• Experience of managing doctors who have failed to engage/participate in their annual appraisal/revalidation.
• Experience of managing pension payments and the production of SOLO forms, Locum A forms and liaising with finance colleagues.
• Some knowledge and understanding of GMC Regulations, the Responsible Officers Regulations, NHS England Appraisal Policies, and the AoMRC Medical Appraisal 2022.
• Experience of managing difficult conversations and complex queries.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.
The Professional Standards Team (whose functions include Performance, Appraisal and Revalidation and National Performers Lists Management) is responsible for ensuring high quality and safety of primary care services by managing any concerns relating to primary care practitioners across the three (GPs, dentists, and opticians) independent contractor groups.
The Responsible Officer (RO) Regulations provide an unprecedented degree of leverage to ensure the quality of medical staff and safety of care across all NHS and independent sector providers. The Professional Standards Team ensures that recommendations for Revalidation are completed appropriately.
The Professional Standards Team carries out all functions associated with the Responsible Officer (RO) Regulations and support the RO in making recommendations to the GMC regarding the revalidation of NHS GPs.
Medical revalidation is a statutory process where licensed doctors in England must demonstrate to the General Medical Council (GMC), usually every five years, that they are up to date and fit to practise. During the five-year period we ensure arrangements are in place for doctor to undertake an annual appraisal in accordance with the regulations.
Designated bodies with prescribed connections to doctors must appoint a Responsible (RO) Officer. Designated bodies, of which NHS England is one, have a statutory duty to support their RO in discharging their duties.
Performance of GPs, Dentists and Ophthalmic Practitioners is managed through the Performers List Regulations, whilst Pharmacists are managed in conjunction with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
The Professional Standards Team supports the administration of appraiser payments, including the issuing of Solo forms and pension contribution queries.
