1. Inspects a large variety of heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical and automotive vehicles such as attack tanks, large cranes, tank retrievers, fire trucks, bridge transporters, armored vehicle launched bridges, bulldozers, road graders, crawler tractors, power shovels, self propelled earth compacting equipment, self propelled artillery, etc. May also inspect heavy artillery, small arms, powered support and other equipment or components of equal or lesser complexity.
2. Inspects complex, interrelated mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electronic and electrical systems, equipment and their components while in operation or in a standby condition. Inspects and performs tests to braking, steering, and differential systems, which are mechanically integrated with the transmission; to large engines that directly power multiple hydraulic and pneumatic systems; to intricate fuel injection systems; to turret stabilization systems; and to other systems combined in a single, complex mechanical assembly. Uses specially designed testing methods and test equipment such as computerized test sets, precision gauges, electronic sensors, injector test stands, engine scopes, etc., to assure that tolerance and safety factors have been met.
3. Inspects equipment to determine repairs needed. Utilizes established Maintenance Expenditure Limits (MEL) to evaluate economic feasibility of repair(s). Considers a variety of factors such as cost and availability of parts, man-hours, and impact of time constraints on the mission to assess whether repair is economical. Recommends to a higher echelon to condemn equipment when the repair cost exceeds the established MEL. Prepares lists of needed repairs, parts, and man-hours authorized. Performs in-process inspections to assure that equipment is being repaired in accordance with pertinent requirements. Performs final inspection, certifying that equipment is in satisfactory operating condition, or rejects the work and returns the equipment to the repair shop with specific reports prescribing additional repairs.
4. Inspects the full range of equipment as described above at remote worksites in support of field organizations, field units during field exercise training periods, or before major pieces of equipment are sent for repair to a supporting maintenance facility. Serves as inspector on Command Maintenance Evaluation Teams (COMET) and/or as a member of Maintenance Assistance and Instruction Teams (MAIT)

Develops and implements a training program for subordinate electronics technicians in accordance with Army Regulations (AR) and Training Circulars (TC). Attends and successfully completes formal training courses and on-the-job training programs. Maintains training records. Ensures electronics technicians are well trained, properly certified, and knowledgeable and proficient to comply with equipment certification responsibilities. Ensures electronics technicians are fully trained in all aspects of job-related safety, equipment safety, personal safety and security directives.

Interfaces with and provides expert technical advice and guidance to the Airfield Manager, installation leadership, higher headquarters, and associated government agencies on complex ATC equipment maintenance and support issues. Works closely with the Airfield Manager, Air Traffic Control Facility Chief, Department of the Army Representative (DAR), and other key installation personnel to ensure mission requirements are met with no adverse impact. Prepares, plans, support agreements, staff summary sheets, written reports and recommendations to leadership concerning equipment issues, problems, base support, and other limiting factors. Develops and publishes organizational level operating instructions as appropriate to assign responsibilities and delineate requirements for equipment operation, accountability, and maintenance. Serves as a senior electronics technician responsible for maintaining a highly-complex Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower used for safely guiding both civilian and military aircraft in the vicinity of the airport. Incumbent exercises judgment in the selection, interpretation and application of a wide range of most applicable established guidelines and methods for typical situations, and recognizes when guidelines and methods prescribed are not sufficient and modifies concepts, practices, and precedents to derive innovative approaches and procedures to meet specific atypical situations caused by compressed timeframes, electromagnetic interference or variances in electronic circuitry. Incumbent monitors individuals, small work groups or teams on site, and is responsible for oversight, maintenance, certification and documentation of assigned ATC and Navigational Aid systems and facilities in the National Airspace System (NAS). Major, controversial problems are discussed with the ATC Facility Chief and Airfield Manager for the purpose of reaching unanimity of opinions and objectives. Decisions, recommendations, maintenance certifications and documentation of a punitive nature are conducted by the employee and are normally accepted as technically correct and binding on the agency. Incumbent is routinely required to formulate point papers, status reports and other correspondence in an effort to assist contract manager with understanding and accepting findings and recommendations related to the field of expertise.

Participates in, and conducts site surveys to determine the best location of new or relocated ATC facilities. Aids in the planning and design, or modifies existing electronic designs for the installation or modification of ATC facilities. Acts as local project manager for new equipment installation or equipment/facility upgrade to include maintenance of a prescribed project folder, coordination of project support requirements, and establishment of a new equipment stock list, preventive maintenance program, and training package.

Perform limited diagnosis, routine repairs and maintenance on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical and automotive vehicles.

Assist higher graded mechanics in the repair and/or overhaul of major systems to include internal combustion engines, turbine engines, automatic and non-automatic transmissions, heavy duty drive line systems, and hydraulic utility systems and controls.

Independently perform routine repairs and maintenance functions in remote locations that can be accomplished by removing, cleaning, reinstalling, or replacing defective parts of components and systems using standard parts.

Receive guidance and instruction from a higher graded mechanic or supervisor to perform non-routine and more complex repairs on portions of major assemblies and/or systems.

Conduct limited readiness and repair inspections on vehicles and associated equipment supported by the activity.

Perform Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) and ensures vehicles and equipment are properly serviced, including brake adjustments, replacing hydraulic fluids, greasing, cleaning, etc.

Recover and evacuates inoperable vehicles from the unit location of breakdown.

Determine when parts should be cleaned, adjusted or replaced with standard parts to complete work orders.

As a Surface Maintenance Mechanic, WG-5801-10, you will:

• Troubleshoot, perform maintenance and major repairs on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical and automotive vehicles. This may include self-propelled artillery, tracked cargo and personnel carriers, road graders, mobile cranes, front loaders, conveyors, bulldozers, power shovels, compressors, generators, tanks, tracked combat vehicles, sedans, buses, all terrain vehicles, trucks, semi trailers, forklifts, tractors, and accessory equipment. Troubleshoot, repair and overhaul major systems to include internal combustion engines, turbine engines, automatic and non-automatic transmissions, heavy duty drive line systems, and hydraulic utility systems and controls. Make repairs to assemblies and components such as voltage regulators, generators/alternators, brake cylinders, etc. Perform work in accordance with modification work orders, technical manuals, lubrication orders, maintenance bulletins, regulations or management policies. May repair a variety of more complex major systems to include engines, cross drive or similar multi-system transmissions and a variety of intricate fuel injection systems.
• Troubleshoot equipment and diagnose the cause of mechanical failures by means of visual and auditory checks and/or uses test equipment such as engine analyzers, compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters, pressure gauges, and computer diagnostic tools. Utilize embedded diagnostics in equipment and a wide variety of original equipment manufacturer system analyzers in order to determine the exact nature or extent of repair. Determine what adjustments may be necessary to complete work orders, and whether any additional repairs other than those specified or indicated on the work order are necessary.
• Remove and disassemble engines and major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and fuel, hydraulic, and oil pressure systems. Make the appropriate repairs, overhaul, or modifications in accordance with the proper repair specifications and procedures. Reassemble engines and other systems, and adjusts, tests, and re-installs in vehicles and equipment as necessary. Make adjustments and repairs to electrical and suspension systems. May install pistons, sleeves, rings, bearings, rods, crankshafts, timing gears, and rocker arms. May be required to perform fuel injection equipment repair, overhaul, rebuild, and calibration duties utilizing a variety of complex test and calibration equipment.
• Independently perform repairs and maintenance functions in remote locations that can be accomplished by removing, cleaning, reinstalling, or replacing defective parts of components and systems such as injectors, leaking wheel cylinders, corroded mufflers, fuel tanks, brake cylinders and worn brake shoes, voltage regulators, generators, injector pumps, and fuel pumps. Provide technical guidance and specialized team leadership to lower grade employees within the team. Assist lower grade mechanics in performing major repair work. May provide Field and limited Sustainment maintenance at unit locations as part of a "contact team." Recover and evacuate inoperable vehicles from the unit location of breakdown. May assist higher graded mechanics in repairing a variety of interconnected systems such as electrical, air and hydraulic systems, complex state of the art electrical and electronic systems that use specialized diagnostic equipment to identify problems, complex fuel injection systems and other similar complex systems.
• Conduct readiness and repair inspections on vehicles and associated equipment supported by the activity. Perform operational inspections and ensure vehicles and equipment are properly serviced, including brake adjustments, replacing hydraulic fluids, greasing, cleaning, etc., and perform other preventive maintenance operations as required. Inspect supported equipment prior to use during Inactive Duty Training (IDT) and Annual Training (AT), to ensure that it is functioning properly. May inspect in-process repair work of lower graded repairer to ensure equipment is being repaired in accordance with pertinent requirements. May serve as a commodity inspector during Command Maintenance Management evaluations (COMET) or as a member of a Maintenance Assistance Instruction Team (MAIT). Instruct operator/crew in the maintenance of equipment and provide technical advice and assistance to supported units when requested.
