Location
The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days.
What You’ll Do
The Department of Finance manages the city’s investing, fiscal analysis, budgeting, debt, and asset management, tax assessment and collection, and accounting functions as well as establishing, maintaining and enforcing fiscal policies, practices and procedures for the entire City and County of Denver. The Department commits to Denver residents the delivery of these services through a financial structure that mirrors the best practices of both the public and private sectors. This commitment promotes better service, enhanced performance measures, maximum accountability, and improved business processes.
This position exists in the Special Accounts Unit of the Treasury Division. In this Tax Technician Specialist role, you will specialize in delinquent taxes, tax liens, the Treasurer’s Deed process, and understanding and applying related statutes to your work. The position will also cross-train with the duties of other Tax Technician Specialists in the unit, including complex account research, reviewing and processing post-warrant tax adjustments, and mass payment and redemption payment posting and reconciliation.
Specifically, as a Tax Technician Specialist you will:
Work with stakeholders both internal and external to the city to coordinate Treasury business and process complex tax requests, which includes working with citizens, businesses, the state, and city departments and agencies
Review notices from the District Court, Public Trustee, Sheriff’s Sale, and Denver Probate Court and provides documentation as needed
Receive and process Treasurer’s Deed applications. Reviews title work and other legal documents for accuracy, completeness, and consistency. Prepares legal advertising and notices to comply with statutory requirements. Conducts research and contacts parties of interest to attempt to collect redemption payments and explain statutorily guided processes and timelines. Has strong attention to detail and completes tasks within the timelines provided by statute
Explain tax laws related to delinquent taxes and tax liens to various parties of interest including property owners, creditors, businesses, attorneys, and other governmental and private entities
Assist in processing all manner of property tax payments and/or property tax refunds, ensuring accuracy and completeness
Cross-train with other Tax Technician Specialists within the Special Accounts unit to ensure adequate coverage of duties and responsibilities across Treasurer Deeds, post warrant adjustments, mass payments, redemptions and redemption reconciliation, and complex property tax research
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested

Required Minimum Qualifications
Education Requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate
Experience Requirement: Five (5) years of technical level tax account management experience, which includes processing payments, reconciling accounts, assisting taxpayers with questions, and enforcing tax ordinances and laws
Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.
License/Certifications: Requires a driver’s license at the time of application
