We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Shift Operator to join the North London Wastewater Treatment. This is a critical role, responsible for the day-to-day physical operation of plant, ensuring regulatory (EA) consent compliance are met for the STW.
The role covers the largest sewage treatment works in Europe, so the ability to navigate site effectively is vital. As the role is part of a shift rota you will be expected to cover absences as required.
What you’ll be doing as a Shift Operator
You will be responsible for directly supporting the Specialist Process Controller on shift to deliver process compliance assurance, technical process support, optimisation of process control via physical operation of plant. As the eyes and ears of the site, you will also be identifying process faults and potential improvements and following them through to relevant escalation.
Day to day responsibilities include:
- Provide process support by proactively and reactively providing operational support to specialist process controllers.
- Conducting valving operations, assisting with the isolations, resetting plant.
- Liaise with site management to ensure learning and updates are effectively communicated and implemented by the wider team.
- Conduct routine checks, maintenance, and operating mobile plant to ensure that process conditions are uninterrupted.
- Taking routine samples to allow performance data to be accurately tracked and process conditions adjusted.
- Adherence to legal standards and company health, safety policy is essential.
Base Location: Beckton Sewer Treatment Works - IG11 0AD
Working Pattern or hours: Continental shift, as below.
3 days on –> 2 off –> 4 nights on –> 8 off –> 4 days on –> 2 off –> 3 nights on –> 16 off –> repeat

What you should bring to the role
- Be a self-motivated individual who can immerse themselves into the team around them, you need to be very disciplined have the desire to learn from those around you and have a can-do attitude.
- Competent in the Wastewater treatment operations – Management of Wastewater as a minimum (training will be provided for the right candidate).
- Excellent communicator, influencer, and problem solver.
- Ability to deliver operational process targets.
- Adaptability in covering shift changes.
- Have proven relevant experience in the frontline of an operational role.
- Able to demonstrable role modelling of Thames Water’s values and behaviours.
