The purpose of this position is to effectively manage the continuous operation, maintenance, and repair/rehabilitation of water and wastewater utility systems within Shenandoah National Park (SNP). Systems include potable water pumping, storage, transmission, treatment and distribution systems; wastewater collection, storage and treatment systems; chlorination systems; and state certified potable water and wastewater quality testing laboratories. Duties include:

• Effectively manage and supervise the operation and maintenance of water and wastewater utility systems.
• Develop bi-weekly operational planning through multi-year repair/rehab, cyclic and preventative maintenance planning.
• Utilize an automatic financial system to prepare, monitor and maintain a balanced annual budget.
• Responsible for the complete and accurate compliance of the SNPs utility systems in accordance with State and Federal regulations.

• Water Treatment Certificate: You must possess and maintain a current Water Treatment Operators Certificate, and you must be able to secure and maintain a valid Virginia Department of Health Services Class 6 or higher Water Treatment Operators Certificate. • Wastewater Treatment Certificate: You must possess and maintain a current Wastewater Treatment Operators Certificate, and you must be able to secure and maintain a valid Virginia Department of Health Services Class 2 or higher Wastewater Treatment Operators Certificate. Please indicate the level of certification you currently possess.

Major duties include but are not limited to:

• Responsible for dispatching of General Services Administration vehicles, coordinating needed maintenance and repairs, keeping vehicles clean.
• Operates all vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of up to approximately 29,500 lbs. in order to carry out all the functions of Engineering Service and support the needs of the FXHCC.
• Transports patients, medical records, medical equipment, supplies, linen, mail, VAMC personnel and other items essential to the day-to-day operations of the FXHCC.
• Operates gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles over Federal, state, and county roads and city streets in all traffic conditions and is required to load and unload vehicles.
• Makes special touring trips to different locations as requested.
• Completes all maintenance service records to document activities.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Operate, maintain and make repairs to (3) dual-fuel (natural gas and fuel oil) fired high pressure boilers (130 psi), each with a 30,000 lb. per hour peak steam generating capacity.
• Operates and maintains a 500,000 gallon water softening plant which eliminates turbidity, alkalinity, and hardness by chemical process for sterilized processing, critical humidity control and laundry plant operations. Incumbent operates an 88 gallon per minute sodium zeolite and DE alkalizing water softening plant for furnishing feed water.
• Analyze feed-water, boiler-water, and condensate using standard chemical tests and determine the treatment and chemicals to be used to control chemical concentrations, remove impurities and entrapped gases, or stabilize fluctuating water conditions in the boiler.
• The incumbent will operate, adjust, and maintain auxiliary and pollution control equipment such as electrical or steam driven pumps, forced and induced draft fans, air compressors, deaerating equipment, feed water heaters, economizers, fuel heaters and delivery equipment, and demineralizing systems.
• Performs all other duties as they are assigned.
