The key responsibilities involved include:

- Leading the SSE team and managing multiple external contractors, to ensure project excellence is achieved and we deliver on our promises.

- Managing the development and execution of large capital projects, ensuring the safe delivery to programme, cost and the necessary quality.

- Ensuring the project adheres to our Safety Management Systems, best practices and the SSE Large Capital Projects (LCP) Governance processes.

What do I need?

- A strong project management, engineering or construction background and understanding of applicable health and safety regulations including CDM regulations.

- Excellent communication and leadership skills with a proven track record in the successful delivery of large projects.

- Contractual management experience (NEC3 experience is preferable), with the ability to forecast and control costs as well as develop and manage integrated project programmes.

- Due to the location of our projects, there is a need to have a driving licence and, for delivery focussed roles, a willingness to travel to site and be on site for 2-3 days a week during construction.

- Experience managing large electricity transmission projects would be great but, experience in managing major projects from other industries, coupled with the desire and ability to learn quickly is equally valid.

What do I need?

- A recognized Project Management qualification such as Prince 2 (Foundation) or similar, or equivalent experience

Reporting to the Project Director of Large Capital Delivery for Connections (SHEPD), you'll be managing Large Capital & Connections Projects for the Networks business throughout the North of Scotland.

There are two roles available covering projects either in Shetland or the Caithness area in the North of Scotland. Any applicant must be prepared to travel to one or the other of these areas.

Our work makes a meaningful difference to reducing the carbon impact of homes in Scotland. Part of what we do involves managing and delivering energy efficiency projects all over Scotland. This role will focus on projects being delivered in the North East of Scotland including Moray. We deliver schemes to install various insulation and renewable technology measures in people’s homes. Helping them feel warmer and lower their carbon impact.

That’s where you come in! As the managing agent, we partner with local authorities, housing associations, and social landlords to improve the energy efficiency of homes. You’ll use your project management and strong relationship building skills to work effectively with various partners and be confident communicating with various stakeholders.

You’ll already have an understanding of the complexities involved with delivering retrofit projects, such as driving quality and managing complex timelines. Playing a key role in the Building Decarbonisation team, you’ll be supported by project administrators and work closely with our internal Quality Assurance and Quantity Surveying teams.

SSEN Transmission has an exciting opportunity for a Lead Project Manager to join our onshore Capital Delivery Team on a fixed term contract (maternity cover). This role is specifically for the Beauly - Spittal Project, a major new onshore (overhead line and substation) transmission infrastructure project.

It is an exciting period of growth for SSEN Transmission, we have an increasing number of complex and challenging infrastructure projects to develop and deliver. The Lead Project Manager is a pivotal and senior role in our Capital Delivery Team, the successful candidate will play an important part in enabling the energy transition and supporting the Scottish and UK Government's Net Zero ambitions.

The key duties & responsibilities will be:

- Reporting to the Deputy Project Director you will oversee the delivery of a set of major transmission infrastructure projects, managing a team of project and senior project managers and working closely with external delivery contractors and consultants.

- Working closely with the Transmission Management Team to uphold the highest level of safety performance and ensure projects are refined, constructed and commissioned in line with regulatory requirements.

- As a strong communicator, you will build and maintain productive and enduring relationships with Contractors, Stakeholders, Communities and the public to support the sustainable delivery of the projects that you are responsible for.

- You will be expected to identify business improvements and where required support colleagues and the business to develop, test, implement and verify business improvements. You will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and internal regulations, processes and governance.

What do I need?

To be considered, we look for you to have:

- Extensive experience leading project teams to deliver large or major infrastructure projects in delivery phases and experience working at a senior level in project delivery, ideally with specific knowledge of electricity networks.

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) and an advanced understanding of project management systems and governance for the execution of large projects.

- A strong commercial background, experience managing large multi-million-pound contracts (in excess of £100m) and preferably experience working with NEC contract forms.

- You will preferably hold a professional registration or qualification, such as Chartered Project Professional, Chartered Engineer, or are working towards the same or similar.

Due to the need to travel between our offices and sites throughout Central and Northern Scotland, there is a requirement for you to have a full, current driving licence.

Your new company

You will be working for a leading civil engineering contractor with a busy 2024 ahead of them in the Inverness area. Joining them on a freelance basis, for an initial 6-month contract, you will provide expertise in your role as a Project Manager. With a start date of August 2024, you will join the project in the pre-construction phase and see it right through to handover.

Your new role

In your new role as a Project Manager, you will be involved in finalising the construction plan with the wider team and then taking a lead role in its delivery. You will be working as part of a team and displaying clear leadership skills as head of the project. You will manage health & safety across the project and work with site supervisors to ensure all operatives are adhering to health & safety standards and procedures on site. You will organise all direct labour, plant and materials for the project and work with the commercial team to procure them in line with company processes. On a day-to-day basis, you will manage subcontractors and track the project in line with the desired timeframe. Working closely with the Quantity Surveyor assigned to the project, you will proactively manage costs and risks on site.

What you'll need to succeed

In order to be successful in this role, you must have previous experience in a Project Manager role or Senior Site Agent/ Manager level. You will display excellent organisation skills and the ability to lead the site team. A background in civil engineering is essential, with a formal qualification such as a degree or HND in Civil Engineering being preferred. Ideally, you will have knowledge and experience of the construction of new roads and structures and an understanding of NEC 4 contracts. Previous experience of managing a project's programme in line with weekly and monthly priorities is key as you will play a key role in the successful delivery of the site. Managing labour and subcontractors and the ability to foster a safe and productive working environment will be key. You must also hold an SMSTS, First Aid and CSCS card.

- Be familiar with construction health and safety requirements with a knowledge of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and other key relevant Health, Safety and Environmental legislation.

- An operational understanding of electrical networks gained within the Distribution and/or Transmission businesses.

- Experience of the NEC3 Suite of Contracts, with a focus on the Engineering and Construction and Professional Services Contracts.
