SALARY: $39,918.00 - $42,328.00 Annually

Eligibility: Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the director of human resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
Criminal Background Check: Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to this position identified as positions of trust will be required to authorize the release of and successfully complete a fingerprint check.
Probation: All persons, including current city employees, selected from this position will be on probation for 6 months.
CLASS DEFINITION
A Laboratory Assistant II prepares a variety of samples and specimens for testing, sterilizes equipment, maintains laboratory in clean condition and performs routine tests under supervision of chemists or technologists. The work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.
Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class may work a rotating shift, weekends and holidays. Work is performed in a laboratory where incumbents may be exposed to heat, infectious diseases and toxic chemicals. Work requires minimal physical exertion; however, there may be periods of prolonged walking or standing.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of laboratory procedures, equipment and terminology.
Knowledge of the fundamentals of the metric system.
Ability to perform routine laboratory tests.
Ability to clean and sterilize laboratory equipment, instruments and glassware.
Ability to follow instructions.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
Ability to prepare media and solutions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:
EDUCATION: Have an associate of science degree in laboratory technology or the chemical or biological sciences from an accredited college.
OR
NOTE EQUIVALENCIES: Have one year of experience in laboratory work may be substituted for each year of the education requirement.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES
Positions in the Department of Public Works may require a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management.
NOTE: Employees assigned to this class who analyze drinking water must successfully complete periodic lab certification performance tests administered by the Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
