JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Theatre Technical Manager will plan and oversee the technical design (scenery, lighting and sound) and installation for major theatrical and performing arts productions in the theatre venues, such as the David O McKay Auditoriums and/or the Little Theatre. They will coordinate and provide for each of the venues in need of the technical and staging support required for theatre and performing arts productions. The Manager will serve as the contact person for FM’s and IT’s routine maintenance of the facilities and technical support equipment. The manager will recommend service, repair and replacement of said facilities and equipment as well as coordinate the planning and work required for upgrades and improvement. The manager will teach technical Theatre (THEA 142) once a year as adjunct faculty.
MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES
(70%) Technical theatre design and installation
(a) Direct and manage technical operations of theatre productions or performing arts in the main theatre venues; (b) work with theatre director/faculty and music faculty in set, lighting and sound design for performances; (c) work with theatre faculty in maintaining scene shops, constructing and installing sets/lighting/sound devices for productions; (d) serve as building supervisor after normal hours of operation, or during assigned productions and performances; (e) ensure smooth operation of the technical aspects of all productions; (f) supervise student assistants/ushers for the above-mentioned events; (g) teach technical Theatre class (THEA 142) once a year when time allows.
(20%) Coordinating
(a) Coordinate with FM and IT on the preventive and routine maintenance and repairs of facilities and equipment; (b) Recommend equipment replacement due to wear and tear; (c) coordinate with scheduling of events in these venues; (d) coordinate with FM on maintaining/cleaning and securing the facilities.
(10%) Monitoring safety codes
(a) Work with Campus Safety Coordinator regarding enforcement of fire regulations, safety and security practices; (b) implement effective risk management procedures and documentation; (c) develop and implement preventative maintenance and inspection policies and procedures; (d) coordinate with Facilities Management the work of staff responsible for maintenance and repair and the administration of contract services for HVAC.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Master's degree in technical theatre preferred; or bachelor’s degree in technical theatre with 5 or more years of experience in the production side of the performing arts; or bachelor’s degree in performing arts with five or more years of technical management experience in operating a theater.
SKILL SET
- Knowledge and experience in set, lighting, sound design and installation for theatre production or other performing arts.
- Familiarity with theatrical production duties for all technical sides involved.
- Well-versed in Word and Excel and capable of communicating over the Internet.
- Be able to teach, select, supervise, motivate, train and evaluate the work of students and staff and foster a positive work attitude based on teamwork.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION:
- Technical theatre director level skill in theatrical productions with experience in stage rigging, projection, and stagecraft along with the capacity to construct set designs including utilization of in-house acoustical shell and soft goods and projection screens.
- Valid Hawaii driver's license.
Approximate starting hourly rate: $29.00 - $33.00. The wage offered could be above or below range based on education and experience as it relates to the job description.
Physical Demands:
- Able to walk the campus and climb several flights of stairs carrying a minimal amount of equipment.
- Able to carry 40 pounds.
- Able to crawl and work in tight spaces.
- Requires walking on a catwalk over 40 ft high.
- Must have good sight and hearing to determine the quality of service provided.
