The incumbent serves as an expert providing authoritative advice and consultation for more difficult, complex, or unique tests requiring special knowledge. Examples include, but are not limited to, Flow cytometry (i.e. T-cell enumeration, leukemia/lymphoma panel), bone marrow examination and molecular/DNA/genetic knowledge. Advises on various aspects of specialized testing; including appropriateness taking into consideration clinical context. The technical specialist in Flow Cytometry often works independently and is given freedom of action under the general guidance of a pathologist or other laboratory practitioner.
Carries out all of the testing responsibilities of the GS-9 medical technologist but has higher levels of professional responsibilities and expertise. These assignments require specialized training and experience. Employee must be knowledgeable in the principles of fluidics and immunofluorescence that form the basis of flow cytometry. Incumbent has experience performing T-cell enumeration and leukemia lymphoma panel and familiar with 4 to 8 color flow cytometry assays in sample prep, acquisition and analysis. Incumbent has advanced knowledge of specialized and complex subject matter extending beyond the duties of test performance. They have wide latitude for exercising independent judgment. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.
Some of the position duties/tasks:
- Serves as an expert providing authoritative advice and consultation for markedly difficult, complex, unique, and/or emerging tests requiring special knowledge including, but not limited to, molecular/DNA testing, bone marrow examination, genetic testing, and flow cytometry.
- Processes and stains peripheral blood and bone marrow specimens for Flow Cytometry.
- Evaluate patient samples for Leukemia/Lymphoma immunophenotyping and T-cell subsets.
- Performs calibrations, quality control, and maintenance procedures on all equipment in the Flow Cytometry Lab. - Prepares and manages all reagent and antibody inventory; order supplies as needed.
- Conducts studies and recommends changes to correct deficiencies and improve the Flow Cytometry area. Recommends new/replacement instrumentation.
- Evaluates the validity of data in relation to test system and accepted assay procedures. Correlates quantitative and qualitative laboratory results with clinical data (i.e. history, medications) to corroborate results.
- Recognizes methodology limitations such as linearity, interference, sensitivity, and specificity and considers these when drawing conclusions about the validity of testing results.
- Assures corrective action is initiated when test performance deviates from established performance specifications.
- Assures Inventory Management.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases
When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
